Influence of nutrient-derived metabolites on lymphocyte immunity.

Organisms need to protect themselves against potential dangers from their surroundings, yet they require constant and intimate interactions with the same environment for their survival. The immune system is instrumental for protection against invading organisms and their toxins. The immune system consists of many cell types and is highly integrated within other tissues. Immune activity is particularly enriched at surfaces that separate the host from its environment, such as the skin and the gastrointestinal tract. This enables protection at sites directly at risk but also enables environmental

Sulfur as a signaling nutrient through hydrogen sulfide.

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) has emerged as an important signaling molecule with beneficial effects on various cellular processes affecting, for example, cardiovascular and neurological functions. The physiological importance of H₂S is motivating efforts to develop strategies for modulating its levels. However, advancement in the field of H₂S-based therapeutics is hampered by fundamental gaps in our knowledge of how H₂S is regulated, its mechanism of action, and its molecular targets. This review provides an overview of sulfur metabolism; describes recent progress that has shed light on the mechanis

Gaps in meeting nutrient needs in healthy toddlers.

BACKGROUND: Among the potentially critical nutrients for toddlers, vitamin D, iron and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) have recently gained special attention. A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was reported worldwide, affecting also small children. Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia was described to be outstanding among children and prevalent in toddlers. The results of the few available studies investigating LC-PUFA intake in toddlers indicate that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake in this age group fails to agree with current nutritional recommendations. Nutrient deficiencies before and after sleeve gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with nutritional deficiencies. Bariatric surgery could worsen these deficiencies. Fewer nutritional deficiencies would be seen after sleeve gastrectomy compared to the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, but sleeve gastrectomy would also cause further deterioration of the deficiencies. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of pre-operative nutrient deficiencies in sleeve gastrectomy patients and assess the evolution of the nutritional status during the first post-operative year. METHODS: Four hundred seven sleeve gastrectomy patients were assigned to a stan

Nutrient deficiencies after gastric bypass surgery.

Bariatric surgery, and in particular, gastric bypass, is an increasingly utilized and successful approach for long-term treatment of obesity and amelioration of comorbidities. Nutrient deficiencies after surgery are common and have multiple causes. Preoperative factors include obesity, which appears to be associated with risk for several nutrient deficiencies, and preoperative weight loss. Postoperatively, reduced food intake, suboptimal dietary quality, altered digestion and absorption, and nonadherence with supplementation regimens contribute to risk of deficiency. The most common clinically

Nutrient intakes and the common mental disorders in women.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing recognition of the role of nutrition in depression and anxiety. Magnesium, folate and zinc have all been implicated in depressive illness, however there are few data on these nutrients in anxiety disorders and the data from population-studies are limited. AIMS: In a large, randomly-selected, population-based sample of women, this study aimed to examine the relationship between the dietary intakes of these three micronutrients and clinically determined depressive and anxiety disorders and symptoms. METHODS: Nutrient intakes were determined using a validated

Conjugated Linoleic Acid: good or bad nutrient.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a class of 28 positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid octadecadienoic.Currently, it has been described many benefits related to the supplementation of CLA in animals and humans, as in the treatment of cancer, oxidative stress, in atherosclerosis, in bone formation and composition in obesity, in diabetes and the immune system. However, our results show that, CLA appears to be not a good supplement in patients with cachexia.

Nutrient patterns and risk of breast cancer in Uruguay.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the role of nutrient patterns in the etiology of breast cancer (BC) among Uruguayan women. METHODS: A principal component analysis was conducted. The study included 442 newly diagnosed cases of BC and 442 hospitalized controls. RESULTS: Two dietary patterns derived from factor analysis and were labeled as high-meat and antioxidants patterns. Whereas the high-meat pattern was directly associated with BC risk (OR for the highest versus the lowest quartile = 3.50, 95 % CI 1.94-6.30, p-value for trend <0.0001), the antioxidants pattern displayed a protective effect (OR=0.4

Water as an essential nutrient: the physiological basis of hydration.

How much water we really need depends on water functions and the mechanisms of daily water balance regulation. The aim of this review is to describe the physiology of water balance and consequently to highlight the new recommendations with regard to water requirements. Water has numerous roles in the human body. It acts as a building material; as a solvent, reaction medium and reactant; as a carrier for nutrients and waste products; in thermoregulation; and as a lubricant and shock absorber. The regulation of water balance is very precise, as a loss of 1% of body water is usually compensated w

Update of nutrient-deficiency anemia in elderly patients.

Anemia, defined as a hemoglobin level < 13 g/dL in men and < 12 g/dL in women, is an important healthcare concern among the elderly. Nutrient-deficiency anemia represents one third of all anemias in elderly patients. About two thirds of nutrient-deficiency anemia is associated with iron deficiency and most of those cases are the result of chronic blood loss from gastrointestinal lesions. The remaining cases of nutrient-deficiency anemia are usually associated with vitamin B12, most frequently related to food-cobalamin malabsorption, and/or folate deficiency and are easily treated (nutrient-def

Kidney insufficiency and nutrient-based modulation of inflammation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with chronic kidney disease have a high cardiovascular mortality rate. Despite recent advances in dialysis techniques, over 20% of US dialysis patients die every year. Protein-energy malnutrition and inflammation are common and usually concurrent in chronic kidney disease patients, and have been implicated as the main cause of high mortality. We reviewed the pathophysiology of the malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome and its potential modulation by dietary and other nutritional interventions in chronic kidney disease patients. RECENT FINDINGS: The malnutritio

Mechanisms of insulin resistance caused by nutrient toxicity.

Insulin resistance, the impaired action of insulin, has been linked to many important consequences, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, acanthosis nigricans and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Although there are some genetic causes for insulin resistance, the most common cause is an excess of nutrition a condition called "Nutrient Toxicity". Both excess glucose and excess fat can cause insulin resistance in muscle and fat tissues and excess fat can cause insulin resistance in the liver. High fat feeding and fat infusion rapidly lead to the development of insulin resistance caus

Ancestry and progeny of nutrient amino acid transporters.

The biosynthesis of structural and signaling molecules depends on intracellular concentrations of essential amino acids, which are maintained by a specific system of plasma membrane transporters. We identify a unique population of nutrient amino acid transporters (NATs) within the sodium-neurotransmitter symporter family and have characterized a member of the NAT subfamily from the larval midgut of the Yellow Fever vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti (aeAAT1, AAR08269), which primarily supplies phenylalanine, an essential substrate for the synthesis of neuronal and cuticular catecholamines. [Glycine: a cell-protecting anti-oxidant nutrient].

For many researchers it is still difficult to accept that beneficial effects can be obtained in several disease states with the simplest amino acid, glycine. However, evidence is mounting in favour of this idea. It is now clear that dietary glycine protects against shock caused either by blood loss or endotoxin, reduces alcohol levels in the stomach and improves recovery from alcoholic hepatitis, diminishes liver injury caused by hepatotoxic drugs and blocks programmed cell death and reduces the nephrotoxicity caused by the drug cyclosporin A in the kidney, preventing hypoxia and free radical

Nutritional stunting in Egypt: which nutrient is responsible?

We looked at the relationship between linear growth retardation and deficiencies of certain nutrients in Egyptian children. A group of 107 stunted children aged between 10 and 18 years were subjected to history-taking, physical examination and laboratory investigations. Selected cases were referred to radiology for assessment of bone age. Thirty-nine children were enrolled as controls. Serum haemoglobin, alpha-tocopherol, retinol and magnesium levels were significantly decreased in stunted children compared with the controls. Serum zinc levels were also lower in the stunted group but not signi

Nutrient toxicity in pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction.

Nutrients, such as glucose and fatty acids, have a dual effect on pancreatic beta-cell function. Acute administration of high glucose concentrations to pancreatic beta-cells stimulates insulin secretion. In addition, short term exposure of this cell type to dietary fatty acids potentiates glucose-induced insulin release. On the other hand, long-term exposure to these nutrients causes impaired insulin secretion, characterized by elevated exocytosis at low concentrations of glucose and no response when glucose increases in the extracellular medium. In addition, other phenotypic changes are obser
