[Physicians and occupational health: a qualitative study in south-eastern France].

BACKGROUND: Occupational health is a major public health problem in France. However, the level of investment of general practitioners and specialist physicians in this field is not well documented. We aimed at studying elements moving closer or differentiating groups of professionals (notably physicians) in the field of occupational health in terms of conceptions of their roles (prevention and care) and of practices (in particular detection and notification of occupational diseases and perceived barriers). METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study in south-eastern France which consisted of in

Association between combined occupational exposure to coal dust and noise and high-frequency hearing loss among workers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational environments contain a wide variety of harmful factors, with noise often coexisting with other physical, chemical factors, leading to combined exposure that may increase the risk of hearing impairment among workers. This study aims to investigate the association of occupational noise and coal dust combined exposure on noise-induced hearing loss in workers, providing evidence for the prevention and control of occupational noise-induced hearing loss in occupational populations. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1,187 occupationally exposed workers. These

Patch Testing in Chronic Hand Eczema: A Multicentre Study in Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is a common dermatitis with morphological and aetiological heterogeneity. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a major aetiology, and patch testing (PT) is essential to characterize CHE and guide its treatment and prevention. OBJECTIVES: Determine the prevalence of ACD in CHE patients, describe relevant allergens, and identify differences in atopic and occupational settings. METHODS: We conducted a multicentric retrospective observational study, based on PT results of CHE patients evaluated between 2021 and 2023, in Portuguese dermatology departments, co

A study of the shift in fatal construction work-related accidents during 2012-2019 in Turkey.

Objectives. The construction sector is one of the sectors with the highest number of occupational accidents and diseases in the world in terms of working conditions. According to the 'Communiqué on Occupational Hazard Classes on Occupational Health and Safety' related to Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, the construction sector is considered a 'very dangerous works' class. Methods. Occupational accidents that occurred between 2012 and 2019 are examined according to occupational groups, working environments, etc. Feature importance and Kendall, Pearson and Spearman correlations were

Lateral epicondylitis treatment by extensor carpi radialis fasciotomy and radial nerve decompression: is outcome influenced by the occupational disease compensation aspect?

INTRODUCTION: The etiology, treatment, and patient management in cases of chronic epicondylitis, within the legislation on occupational disease, remain highly controversial. HYPOTHESIS: Recognition as an occupational disease has a negative influence on the functional result of epicondylitis treated with aponeurotomy and neurolysis of the motor branch of the radial nerve. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (30 cases of epicondylitis) were operated between January 2007 and January 2008. There were nine men and 19 women whose mean age was 46.1 years. A preoperative EMG found anomalies

Study of the effects of occupation and industry on sperm quality.

Most of the environmental exposures known to affect testicular function and/or male fertility are to pharmacologic agents, alkylating agents and antitestosterone agents. There are however, few firmly-based associations with occupational exposure. The aim of this study was therefore to determine if there is any association between different semen parameters (viz. sperm count and motility) in relation to occupations and industrial groupings. A total of 614 subjects who attended an andrology clinic were studied. The investigation included a detailed occupational history, clinical examination and

Solar protection behaviors among outdoor workers.

Due to the lack of information regarding how US workers protect themselves from ultraviolet radiation, this study explored solar protection behaviors among three groups of outdoor workers. This cross-sectional research involved two separate studies. Study 1 consisted of observations of 312 outdoor workers, and Study 2 was a paper and pencil survey (n = 240). For each data set, occupational groups were compared on ultraviolet radiation protection. Observational data indicated that 50.4% of the workers had adequate protection. Across occupational groups, the ranking from highest to lowest levels

Dermatitis among workers in Ontario: results from the Occupational Disease Surveillance System.

OBJECTIVES: Dermatitis is the most common occupational skin disease, and further evidence is needed regarding preventable risk factors. The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) derived from administrative data was used to investigate dermatitis risk among industry and occupation groups in Ontario. METHODS: ODSS cohort members were identified from Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) accepted lost time claims. A case was defined as having ≥2 dermatitis physician billing claims during a 12-month period within 3 years of cohort entry. A 3-year look-back period prior to cohort e

[Occupational disease 2108. Degenerative changes of the cervical spine as a causality criterion in the assessment of discogenic diseases according to BeKV 2108].

With the second amendment to the Ordinance on Occupational Diseases (BeKV) of 18 December 1992, discogenic diseases of the spine are included in the disease register of occupational diseases for the first time. If occupations that impose stress on the spine have been practised for many years, the possibility exists of recognizing degenerative diseases as an occupational disease. In assessment practice, the radiological data on the spine exposed to stress is compared with that of regions which are remote from the stress (cervical/thoracic spine). This pattern of the distribution of degenerative

Occupational therapy, cancer, and occupation-centred practice: impact of training in the model of human occupation.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the influence of training in an occupation-centred model on the practice of occupational therapists working in a cancer hospital. There is an increased need for occupation-based rehabilitation services for individuals with and surviving cancer. Incorporating an occupation-centred model into practice has unique challenges for occupational therapists working in oncology settings. Utilizing an occupation-centred model of practice may influence the therapeutic reasoning of occupational therapists. METHODS: A generic qualitative inquiry (Patton, 2015) was used to

Predictors for occupational injuries and diseases among commercial fishers in Finland 1996-2015.

Fishing is a hazardous occupation worldwide. Commercial fishers in Finland are an aging and diminishing population with a high injury rate. Insurance claims data for self-employed Finnish commercial fishers during the years 1996 through 2015 (n = 1951) were analysed to assess predictors for occupational injuries and diseases. Out of the available variables, fishery location, career length, and participation in the voluntary occupational health service programme were not significant predictors. Male gender (OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.37-2.99), Finnish mother tongue vs. Swedish (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.53-2.55

Occupational applications of a human cancer research model.

Many bladder cancers are indolent, and since there are no biomarkers to predict progression, the prognosis is problematic. Utilizing an in vitro/in vivo human uroepithelial cell (SV-HUC.PC) transformation system, we investigated several molecular events occurring along the continuum of exposure to disease outcome as potential biomarkers for occupational carcinogenesis. The model also served to generate information on the occupational carcinogenicity of N-hydroxy-4,4'-methylene bis(2-chloroaniline) [N-OH-MOCA]. Two of 14 groups of SV-HUC.PC treated with various concentrations of N-OH-MOCA forme

WorkAbility Mark III: functional assessment of workplace capabilities.

Standardized measurement of workplace performance or the functional assessment of an individual's capabilities, especially by occupational therapists, is often critical before injured workers are returned to work, placed in new jobs, or evaluated for job incapacity. A direct link between a clinician's systematic findings and the detailed requirements of the workplace is desirable. There are a range of vocational evaluation systems available. This study examines how one of these systems, WorkAbility Mark III, incorporates a work measurement technique of industrial engineering into occupational

[Classification of mines in Poland by group radiation exposure of miners].

The computer data base on individual occupational exposure to ionizing radiation among miners (established at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Lodz) was used to classify all Polish non-uranium mines (coal, copper, lead-zinc and chemical raw material mines) according to values of the so-called group radiation exposure (in man-sivert units). In total 72 coal mines, 13 chemical raw material mines and 10 metal ore mines employing 246,580, 3,080, 17,820 miners, respectively, were assessed. The analysis of individual annual miners exposures indicated the highest exposure to ionizing rad

Preservative contact allergy in occupational dermatitis: a machine learning analysis.

Occupational dermatoses impose a significant socioeconomic burden. Allergic contact dermatitis related to occupation is prevalent among healthcare workers, cleaning service personnel, individuals in the beauty industry and industrial workers. Among risk factors, the exposure to preservatives is frequent, since they are extensively added in products for occupational use. The goal of this study is to investigate the contact allergy patterns in order to understand the linkage among hypersensitivity to preservatives, occupational profiles, patients' clinical and demographic characteristics. Patch
