Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder that causes generalized sclerosis of the bone due to defect in bone resorption and remodeling. Albergs-Schonberg disease or autosomal dominant osteopetrosis type II is a rare form of osteopetrosis. Osteomyelitis is a well-documented complication of osteopetrosis. Any associated dental abnormality may be attributed to the pathological changes in bone remodeling. This case report discusses a case of osteopetrosis with osteomyelitis as a complication in a 8-year-old boy.

Osteopetrosis is a rare bone dysplasia. The disease is characterized by osteoclast dysfunction, producing diffuse symmetrical increase in skeletal bone density and exhibiting various clinical manifestation because of heterogeneous entity. Among them, jaw osteomyelitis, frequently mandibular osteomyelitis, is an important complication encountered in these patients. In this article, 2 patients diagnosed with osteopetrosis with mandibular osteomyelitis would be presented. We used debridement and decortications, removal of hopeless teeth, and topical phenytoin in the management of mandibular osteo

Rhizopus osteomyelitis is an uncommon and often fatal infection that usually occurs in immunocompromised patients. The infection is commonly referred to as "bread mold." The usual course of treatment is Amphotericin B, debridement, and, if needed, amputation of the affected limb. This article details a rare case of postoperative Rhizopus osteomyelitis in an otherwise healthy patient. The patient originally presented at another institution for anterior cruciate ligament repair after a ski injury. Postoperatively, he developed clinical evidence of infection. He was referred to our institution wi

Osteomyelitis of the patella is rare; it essentially occurs in child age. The diagnosis is difficult because of its variable presentation; it should always be considered in patients with persistent peripatellar pain and swelling. This paper reports one case of haematogenous osteomyelitis of the patella not associated with septic knee arthritis. The identification of the organism was performed by the injection-aspiration fluid technique. Treatment is identical to the treatment of osteomyelitis at other locations. The literature is also reviewed and discussed.

A 21-year-old woman who was 9 weeks pregnant presented with osteomyelitis of the mandible that resolved spontaneously after delivery. To our knowledge a link between osteomyelitis of the jaws and pregnancy has not been reported previously.

BACKGROUND: Subacute osteomyelitis is well known for diagnostic difficulty because of insidious nonspecific clinical courses and radiographic appearances mimicking various benign and malignant conditions. There are controversies regarding the need for surgical debridement and/or postoperative antibiotic therapy. The purposes of this study are to report our experiences of treating subacute osteomyelitis and compare the results of systemic antibiotic therapy with local gentamicin-polymethylmethacrylate bead implantation after curettage of bone lesions.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients referred to

A retrospective study realised over 10 years in the orthopaedic unit of the children's hospital of Tunis allowed to collect 206 cases of osteomyelitis and arthritis in infant (3 months--3 years old). In 74.6% of the cases, infection involved the joint. There is a single focus of the infection in 92.6% of the cases, more often at the lower limbs. The pathogen has been isolated in 33% of the cases. Staphylococcus aureus (52 %) is the more frequent pathogen, especially in osteomyelitis. Enterobateria (16%), Streptococcus (17.7%) (Streptococcus pneumonia: 10.7%), and Hemophylus influenzea (5.3%) w

The incidence of acute and subacute osteomyelitis is declining. Vaccination has almost eradicated Haemophilus bone infection in infants. However, chronic traumatic osteomyelitis is becoming more frequent following an increase in motorcycle accidents and infected internal fixation of fractures. There are now effective means of treating this using the Ilizarov external circular frame.

Diagnosis of acute osteomyelitis is often challenging but can be made by plain radiograph, bone scan, or MR imaging. This diagnosis may be more problematic in small bones, in diabetic or immunocompromised patients, those partially treated, post-traumatic, previous surgery, or with pre-existing marrow conditions and associated soft tissue infections. CT is the modality of choice for revealing sequestra and cortical erosions in chronic osteomyelitis. Nonenhanced and enhanced STIR or fat-saturated sequences are essential to reveal the marrow abnormality and its extension for diagnosis of subtle c

Various imaging modalities are used in diagnosis of acute and chronic infectious endogenous osteomyelitis and exogenous ostitis. The pathophysiological changes of osteomyelitis/ostitis in the bone and surrounding soft tissue are known. Findings in plain film radiography show these changes only in relatively advanced stages of disease. Hence, plain film radiographs are useful as a basic imaging modality by excluding other differentials and as a follow-up modality under therapy. Ultrasound-using advanced technology--offers diagnostic help in acute osteomyelitis, especially in infants. The variou

Salmonella osteomyelitis is a rare disease occurring at a frequency of less than 1% of all cases of osteomyelitis, we report a case of salmonella osteomyelitis of the rib, which was hard to differentiate from chest wall tumor. A 40-year-old man without gastrointestinal symptoms was admitted to our hospital for swelling of the right mammary region. It was suggestive of inflammatory pseudotumor because the swelling diminished, and we could not establish a diagnosis of abscess by scintigraphy with gallium-67 or by computed tomogram (CT). Drainage was carried out in the chest and about 10 ml of pu

The authors report 10 cases of spontaneous pyogenic spinal osteomyelitis encountered within a 3-year period. There were six women and four men, ranging in age from 60 to 84 years. Six cases occurred at the thoracic level, three at the lumbar level, and one in the cervical spine. No patient was diabetic, immunocompromised, or receiving steroid therapy, and none had a history of endocarditis or intravenous drug abuse. No patient had undergone previous spinal surgery. There were no instances of coexisting tuberculosis or malignancy. Contemporaneous cases with known predisposing factors have been

Most cases of osteomyelitis of the skull base occur as a result of inadequately treated localized malignant otitis externa. We present four patients with osteomyelitis of the skull base who did not present initially as malignant otitis externa. Increased morbidity may occur when these atypical cases are not promptly recognized and treated.

Osteomyelitis of the skull base is the most severe form of malignant otitis externa. As a result of having treated 13 patients with skull base osteomyelitis over a 4-year period, we have developed a method of staging and monitoring this malady using gallium and technetium scanning techniques. Stage I is localized to soft tissues, stage II is limited osteomyelitis, and stage III represents extensive skull base osteomyelitis. All stages are treated with appropriate antipseudomonal antibiotics. The duration of therapy depends upon the clearing of inflammation as shown on the gallium scan. Each ca

Bone scans are highly sensitive for the diagnosis of acute osteomyelitis, but the difficulty of separating bone-marrow processes from soft-tissue disease limits the specificity and accuracy. A diagnostic technique capable of distinguishing bone-marrow processes from soft-tissue disease would improve the diagnostic accuracy of osteomyelitis. To evaluate the use of MR in the diagnosis of osteomyelitis, MR examinations were performed in 35 patients with suspected acute osteomyelitis. Twelve of these were proved to have osteomyelitis either by surgery (nine patients) or by clinical follow-up (thre

Seven cats with osseous lesions as the primary manifestation of disseminated Histoplasma capsulatum infection were evaluated. The major clinical signs in these cats were related to the bony lesions and included lameness, bone pain, and soft tissue swelling of limbs and joints. Other clinical and pathologic findings were similar to previously reported forms of disseminated histoplasmosis in the cat. The radiographic appearance of the lesions was predominantly osteolytic; periosteal and endosteal new bone production was present in some cases. Infection occurred primarily in bones of the appendic
