The aim of this study was to investigate whether figure skaters, as individuals who experience intense vestibular stimulation, presented modification of the otolith-ocular reflex. The reflexes of 12 figure skaters were assessed using off vertical axis rotation (OVAR). Horizontal otolith-ocular reflex during OVAR is characterized by two parameters: the eye velocity horizontal modulation, assumed to compensate for perceived lateral linear translation, and the bias, assumed to compensate for the perceived rotation. We observed that skaters presented smaller amplitude of modulation and truly compe

INTRODUCTION: During the last years, an increasing number of papers is presented dealing with diseases and diagnostic procedures of the macula function. On the other hand, there are just a few distinct test setups for this purpose. In clinical routine, this kind of test system has to be efficient and effective to diagnostic and therapeutic findings.
METHODS: The presented test setup includes examination of the semicircular canals by means of harmonic acceleration pendular rotation test and the bilateral, bithermal test as well as otolith function tests i. e. off vertical axis rotation (OVAR)

OBJECTIVE: To detect the endolymphatic hydrops by using the otolithic nature in patients with Meniere's disease and delayed hydrops.
METHODS: We developed a new technique for measuring horizontal eye movements, corresponding to lateral head drop in total darkness, approximately 1g environment. Normal subjects (n=16, mean age: 27.3 years old) and patients (seven for pre-operative state, four for furosemide test at pre-operative state; two for post-operative state) were employed in the test. The principle of the test is to drop the head in a lateral position separately from the body with a rapi

This study aimed to elucidate the effects of linear acceleration on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in humans. Eight healthy young male volunteers were seated in a linear accelerator (sled) during the recording of their electrocardiogram, blood pressure with the Finapres, thoracic impedance and respiration curve. MSNA was recorded from the tibial nerve by microneurography. At a fixed distance of sled movements in an anteroposterior direction, eight modes of stimulation with peak accelerations at 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 G (gravity) in sinusoidal or step mode were applied to each sub

Stapedectomy by ultrasound has been proposed as an alternative method for perforating the stapes footplate in surgery for otosclerosis. Possible functional adverse effects of ultrasound perforation of the otic capsule in guinea pigs were investigated in the present study by means of vestibular evoked potentials (VsEP). VsEP were elicited by pulsed linear accelerations applied to the animal's head following surgical removal of the middle ear, following intense ultrasound drilling around the otic capsule and after drilling a small hole in the anterior bony wall of the vestibule. All manipulation

Motion sickness can occur when an accelerating force acting on the human body repeatedly changes amplitude and direction or both. It also can occur without any motion after transfer into a constant force field significantly different from Earth-gravity. Dynamic and static causes of motion sickness can be distinguished accordingly. Space sickness, too, has dynamic as well as static aspects. Dynamic space sickness might depend on increased bilateral differential sensitivity of the peripheral and central vestibular apparatus, whereas static space sickness may be caused by erroneous compensation o

CLIC5 belongs to a family of ion channels with six members reported so far. In vertebrates, the CLIC5 gene encodes two different isoforms, CLIC5A and CLIC5B. In addition to its ion channel activity, there is evidence for further functions of CLIC5A, such as the remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton during the formation of a functional glomerulus in the vertebrate kidney. However, its specific role is still incompletely understood and a specific functional role for CLIC5B has not been described yet. Here we report our findings on the differential expression and functions of Clic5a and Clic5b dur

OBJECTIVE: After 160 years the true underlying cause of Meniere's disease remains enigmatic. The aim of our study is to discuss the possible implication of an obstruction of the ductus reuniens as a cause in Menière's disease.
METHODOLOGY: We first conducted an historical study of the description of the ductus reuniens. We then reviewed the literature regarding ductus reuniens obstruction in animal experiments, human post-mortem studies and living ear imaging. We completed its description by modern microCT imaging. Limited knowledge on the fate of dislodged saccular otoconia is summarized. Th

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Although most studies have identified damage in the cochlea and semicircular canals as the primary sites of aminoglycoside toxicity, little attention has been devoted to the toxic effects on the otolithic organs. This study aimed to assess the toxic effect of gentamicin eardrops on the inner ear end organs via a novel inner ear monitoring system combined with morphological examination.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
METHODS: Guinea pigs were treated with 50 microL saline (n = 10) and 50 microL gentamicin (40 mg/mL; n = 10) on the right and left round window membranes,

In vertebrates, carbonic anhydrases (CAs) play important roles in ion transport and pH regulation in many organs, including the eyes, kidneys, central nervous system, and inner ear. In aquatic organisms, the enzyme is inhibited by various chemicals present in the environment, such as heavy metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. In this study, the effects of CA inhibitors, i.e., sulfonamides [ethoxyzolamide (EZA), acetazolamide (AZA), and dorzolamide (DZA)], on zebrafish embryogenesis were investigated. In embryos treated with the sulfonamides, abnormal development, such as smaller otoliths,

It has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch reveal motion sickness (a kinetosis) at the transition from 1 g to microgravity. In the course of parabolic aircraft flight experiments, it has been demonstrated that kinetosis susceptibility is correlated with asymmetric inner ear otoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head) or with genetically predispositioned malformed cells within the sensory epithelia of the inner ear. Hitherto, the threshold of gravity perception for inducing kinetotic behavior as well as the relative import

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESES: The hypotheses of the current study are as follows: 1) That if the Epley canalith repositioning maneuver is an effective treatment for benign positional vertigo (BPV), relief from the vertigo should occur virtually immediately after the performance of the maneuver; 2) that the Epley canalith repositioning maneuver does provide almost immediate relief in BPV and should be the established treatment of choice for this disorder in both primary and tertiary care settings; and 3) that residual symptoms of lightheadedness and imbalance do persist after the resolution of the ver

The subjective visual horizontal and vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials are simple, robust, and reproducible tests of otolith dysfunction that can prove clinically useful diagnostic information in patients with vertigo and other balance disorders. While they appear to have high specificity for unilateral otolith dysfunction, further clinical research will be required to establish their sensitivity.

Mammalian otoconia are made up of inorganic calcium carbonate crystallites and organic substance, which is thought to be sulfated glycosaminoglycans and glycoprotein. Mouse otoconia are formed in situ, and the primitive otoconia assume spindle, trigonal, dumbbell, or quadrilobed forms. As the otoconia mature, they assume the typical barrel-shaped body with pointed tips formed by three surfaces. A variety of otoconial disorders have been reported. Otoconial degeneration can result from ototoxic drugs, infection, trauma, and aging. Abnormal otoconia are also known to occur as a result of genetic

BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) produces a wide spectrum of vestibular and auditory abnormalities due to the presence of a "third mobile window." While enhanced otolith-mediated responses are well recognized, the behavior of high-frequency semicircular canal function remains debated. Many patients show reduced superior canal vestibulo-oculomotor reflex (VOR) gains despite preserved or exaggerated utricular responses.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between dynamic semicircular canal responses assessed by video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and otolith

PURPOSE: As the pathological cause of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the dislocation or degeneration of otoconia in the utricle and saccule is suggested. Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) could reflect otolithic dysfunction due to these etiologies of BPPV. The aim of this study was to validate the clinical significance of cervical (c) and ocular (o) VEMP in BPPV by a meta-analysis of previous articles.
METHODS: Articles related to BPPV with data on cVEMP and oVEMP were collected. The following keywords were used to search PubMed and Scopus for English language articles

The Weberian apparatus of otophysan fishes confers acute hearing that is hypothesized to allow these fishes to assess the environment and to find food resources. The otophysan family Serrasalmidae (piranhas and pacus) includes species known to feed on falling fruits and seeds (frugivore/granivores) that splash in rivers, herbivorous species associated with torrents and rapids (rheophiles), and carnivores that feed aggressively within shoals. Relevant sound stimuli may vary among these ecological groups and hearing may be tuned to different cues among species. In this context, we examined size

Otolaryngologists typically perform diagnoses and offer medical treatment for vestibular dysfunction. This vestibular dysfunction manifests as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's disease, vestibular neuronitis, and so on. The etiology of BPPV is still not clear, so in this article we discuss inner-ear function, etiology, and factors related to BPPV. We examined by pure-tone audiometry and hot and cold caloric tests patients whom we identified as having diagnosed posterior canal-type BPPV. We observed canal paresis at a high rate on the affected side (p < .01). The term of re

OBJECTIVE: To explore vestibular integrity by bone vibration-induced nystagmus (VIN) during bedside examination. Disease or dysfunction of vestibular end organs would reduce or eliminate their contribution to total eye movement response to VIN.
BACKGROUND: It is assumed that vibration of the mastoid (at a frequency of 100 Hz) stimulates all vestibular end organs (semicircular canals and otolith structures). Previous studies have described oculomotor responses to vestibular activation by vibratory stimulus. Stimulation of individual semicircular canals produces eye movement in the plane of the
