Neural correlates of symbolic number comparison in developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a deficit in number processing and arithmetic that affects 3-6% of schoolchildren. The goal of the present study was to analyze cerebral bases of DD related to symbolic number processing. Children with DD aged 9-11 years and matched children with no learning disability history were investigated using fMRI. The two groups of children were controlled for general cognitive factors, such as working memory, reading abilities, or IQ. Brain activations were measured during a number comparison task on pairs of Arabic numerals and a color comparison task on pairs of no

Learning Without Neurons: A Review of Associative Memory in Protists.

For decades, the capacity for associative learning was considered a hallmark of multicellular organisms possessing complex nervous systems. However, a growing body of evidence in the field of basal cognition is challenging this neuro-centric paradigm, demonstrating that unicellular eukaryotes, or protozoans, exhibit sophisticated behavioral plasticity. This review synthesizes historical and contemporary research into associative learning-specifically classical and operant conditioning-in prominent protozoan models such as Paramecium, Stentor, and the acellular slime mold Physarum polycephalum.

Teaching Where Life Ends: Peer-Assisted Learning in Hospice as a Model for End-of-Life Nursing Education.

Nursing educational programs are expanding clinical learning opportunities to encompass the hospice/palliative/supportive sphere of care, as outlined in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials to prepare practice-ready nursing graduates. This article outlines one school's journey to integrate end-of-life clinical experiences across the curriculum, starting with beginning nursing students using a peer-assisted learning model at an inpatient hospice facility. Pairing senior and beginning nursing students using the peer-assisted learning model together in the hospice setting re

Olfactory bulb encoding during learning under anesthesia.

Neural plasticity changes within the olfactory bulb are important for olfactory learning, although how neural encoding changes support new associations with specific odors and whether they can be investigated under anesthesia, remain unclear. Using the social transmission of food preference olfactory learning paradigm in mice in conjunction with in vivo microdialysis sampling we have shown firstly that a learned preference for a scented food odor smelled on the breath of a demonstrator animal occurs under isofluorane anesthesia. Furthermore, subsequent exposure to this cued odor under anesthes

Frontal association cortex is engaged in stimulus integration during associative learning.

The frontal association cortex (FrA) is implicated in higher brain function. Aberrant FrA activity is likely to be involved in dementia pathology. However, the functional circuits both within the FrA and with other regions are unclear. A recent study showed that inactivation of the FrA impairs memory consolidation of an auditory fear conditioning in young mice. In addition, dendritic spine remodeling of FrA neurons is sensitive to paired sensory stimuli that produce associative memory. These findings suggest that the FrA is engaged in neural processes critical to associative learning. Here we

Identification of a new genetic variant associated with cholecystitis: A multicenter genome-wide association study.

BACKGROUND: The genomic landscape of gallbladder disease remains poorly understood. We sought to examine the association between genetic variants and the development of cholecystitis. METHODS: The Biobank of a large multi-institutional health care system was used. All patients with cholecystitis were identified using International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes and genotyped across six batches. To control for population stratification, data were restricted to that from individuals of European genomic ancestry using a multidimensional scaling approach. The associa

Cognitive function and cardiovascular responsivity in subjects with a parental history of hypertension.

College-age subjects with and without a parental history of hypertension completed a battery of tests of cognitive function on two separate occasions. Pulse rate and blood pressure were measured during performance of each task. In one session, subjects were told that their performance was being evaluated and videotaped from behind an observation mirror (Evaluation Condition). In the other session, subjects were told that their performance was not being observed (Nonevaluation Condition). Regardless of Evaluation Condition, Parental History subjects exhibited slower search of short-term memory

Increased reading speed for words and pronounceable non-words: evidence of preserved priming in amnesics.

Twelve amnesics with various aetiologies were compares with 12 matched control subjects on a task which examined the increase in reading speed for lists of words and pronounceable non-words that were shown several times and read twice during a training phase. After a four minute delay the reading speed for the primed lists was compared with that for an equal number of umprimed lists. No non-specific practice effects were observed. The amnesics showed an equal proportional increase in reading speed for primed words list to that of their controls, and, if anything, a slightly greater reading spe

Communication deviances and clarity among the mothers of normally achieving and learning-disabled boys.

The main purpose of the study was to reexamine the association between maternal communication deviances and learning disabilities in children. In this study, we adapted and extended the procedure used by Ditton, Green, and Singer (1987). A two-part experimental task was used: one in which the child could not request any clarification of mother's instructions, and another in which the mother and child could communicate. Both communication deviances and the clarity of mothers' communication were analyzed. The subjects were 60 mother-child pairs in which half of the children had learning disabili

Lateralization and behavioral correlation of changes in regional cerebral blood flow with classical conditioning of the human eyeblink response.

Laterality of changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during classical conditioning of the human eyeblink response was studied and changes in rCBF were correlated with conditioned responses. In 10 normal volunteers, rCBF was mapped with positron emission tomography and H2(15)O during pairings of a binaural tone conditioned stimulus and an air puff unconditioned stimulus to the left eye. Control conditions consisted of explicitly unpaired presentations of the tone and air puff before (control) and after (extinction) pairings. During pairings, rCBF increased significantly in right primary

Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to promote long-term foreign language vocabulary learning.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was used to improve foreign-langue learning while using mental imagery. Participants underwent two sessions of 1 mA, 1.5 mA, or sham stimulation prior to learning Swahili-English word pairs two consecutive days. During learning, participants were encouraged to create a mental image of the associated English word. Twenty-four hours after learning and one week later, participants received a cued recall test. A linear dose-response effect of stimulation was found across both tests that occurred long after

Professionalism and mental health in medical and nursing students under prolonged virtual learning: a longitudinal study in Peru.

BACKGROUND: After at least one year of virtual learning due to COVID‑19, medical and nursing faculties varied in their return to in‑person training. The absence of in‑person environments may have affected professionalism components such as empathy, teamwork, and lifelong learning abilities, while also impacting students' mental health and wellbeing. The objective of this study was to measure that effect. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted from 2020 to 2023 in the five medical and nursing faculties of Cusco, Peru. Two cohorts were followed: one with prolonged exposure to virtual learn

Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure impairs performance by adult male rats in an object-place paired-associate task.

Memory impairments, including spatial and object processing, are often observed in individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. The neurobiological basis of memory deficits after prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is often linked to structural and functional alterations in the medial temporal lobe, including the hippocampus. Recent evidence suggests that the medial temporal lobe plays a critical role in processing high-order sensory stimuli such as complex objects and their associated locations in space. In the first experiment, we tested male rat offspring with moderate PAE in a medial tem

Cognitive impairments and depression in Parkinson's disease: a follow up study.

The presence of depression and cognitive impairments was examined in seventy patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Forty nine patients of this original cohort were re-examined between three and four years after the first evaluation. While both depressed and non-depressed patients showed a significant decline in cognitive function during the follow up period, intellectual decline was significantly more severe for the depressed group. Depressed patients also showed a faster rate of progression of motor signs (mainly tremor) than the non-depressed group. Patients that died during the follow up

Characteristics of the memory loss of a patient with Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome without alcoholism.

The memory loss in alcoholic Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome has been well characterized. However, it has been suggested that some of the neuropsychological defects seen in these patients are due to frontal lobe dysfunction resulting from chronic alcohol abuse. The present report details the nature and extent of the amnesia in a Wernicke-Korsakoff patient who did not have a history of alcoholism. In spite of her normal performance on measures of frontal lobe function, this patient showed many characteristics similar to those seen in alcoholic Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome including a graded loss of

FKAN-MoCBDTI: Multimodal drug-target interaction prediction via collaborative bilinear attention and knowledge distillation.

Drug-target interaction (DTI) prediction plays a pivotal role in drug discovery and drug repurposing, yet current deep learning approaches still suffer from limitations in multimodal fusion, fine-grained cross-modal interaction modeling, nonlinear representation learning, and inductive generalization. To overcome these issues, we develop FKAN-MoCBDTI, a multimodal framework that unifies heterogeneous feature extraction, collaborative bilinear attention, Fourier Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (FKAN), teacher-student knowledge distillation and conditional domain adversarial learning (CDAN). "He was the one with the gun!" Associative memory for white and black faces seen with weapons.

Much research has found that implicit associations between Black male faces and aggression affect dispositional judgments and decision-making, but there have been few investigations into downstream effects on explicit episodic memory. The current experiment tested whether such implicit associations interact with explicit recognition memory using an associative memory paradigm in younger and older adults. Participants studied image pairs featuring faces (of Black or White males) alongside handheld objects (uncategorized, kitchenware, or weapons) and later were tested on their recognition memory

Learning to forget: Hippocampal-amygdala connectivity partially mediates the effect of sexual trauma severity on verbal recall in older women undiagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Verbal learning deficits are common among sexually traumatized women who have not been formally diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Aberrant resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the amygdala and hippocampus are implicated in PTSD and verbal memory impairment. We tested rsFC between bilateral dentate gyrus (DG) and both centromedial (CM) and basolateral (BL) nuclei of the amygdala as statistical mediators for the effect of sexual trauma-related symptom severity on delayed verbal recall performance in 63 older women (age: 60-85 years) undiagnosed with PTSD. Sharing One Biographical Detail Elicits Priming between Famous Names: Empirical and Computational Approaches.

In this paper three experiments and corresponding model simulations are reported that investigate the priming of famous name recognition in order to explore the structure of the part of the semantic system dealing with people. Consistent with empirical findings, novel computational simulations using Burton et al.'s interactive activation and competition model point to a conceptual distinction between how priming is initiated in single- and double-familiarity tasks, indicating that priming should be weaker or non-existent for the single-familiarity task. Experiment 1 demonstrates that, within a
