Getting back from the basics: What is the role for attention and fronto-parietal circuits in consciousness?

Morsella et al. present a novel theory of consciousness which is more "low-level, circumscribed, counterintuitive, and passive" than previous accounts. There is much to like about this approach. However, what are the explanatory costs associated with these characteristics? In particular, how does this low-level and passive theory accommodate evidence for top-down attention being necessary (but not sufficient) for visual consciousness?

Obligatory and facultative brain regions for voice-identity recognition.

Recognizing the identity of others by their voice is an important skill for social interactions. To date, it remains controversial which parts of the brain are critical structures for this skill. Based on neuroimaging findings, standard models of person-identity recognition suggest that the right temporal lobe is the hub for voice-identity recognition. Neuropsychological case studies, however, reported selective deficits of voice-identity recognition in patients predominantly with right inferior parietal lobe lesions. Here, our aim was to work towards resolving the discrepancy between neuroima

Acupuncture at Waiguan (SJ5) and sham points influences activation of functional brain areas of ischemic stroke patients: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Most studies addressing the specificity of meridians and acupuncture points have focused mainly on the different neural effects of acupuncture at different points in healthy individuals. This study examined the effects of acupuncture on brain function in a pathological context. Sixteen patients with ischemic stroke were randomly assigned to true point group (true acupuncture at right Waiguan (SJ5)) and sham point group (sham acupuncture). Results of functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed activation in right parietal lobe (Brodmann areas 7 and 19), the right temporal lobe (Brodmann area

Clinical evidence of parietal cortex dysfunction and correlation with extent of allodynia in CRPS type 1.

BACKGROUND: Unusual symptoms such as digit misidentification and neglect-like phenomena have been reported in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which we hypothesized could be explained by parietal lobe dysfunction. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with chronic CRPS attending an in-patient rehabilitation programme underwent standard neurological examination followed by clinical assessment of parietal lobe function and detailed sensory testing. RESULTS: Fifteen (68%) patients had evidence of parietal lobe dysfunction. Six (27%) subjects failed six or more test categories and demonstrated new

Herpes zoster chronification to postherpetic neuralgia induces brain activity and grey matter volume change.

OBJECTIVE: Herpes zoster (HZ) can develop into postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is a chronic neuropathic pain (NP). Whether the chronification from HZ to PHN induced brain functional or structural change is unknown and no study compared the changes of the same brains of patients who transited from HZ to PHN. We minimized individual differences and observed whether the chronification of HZ to PHN induces functional and pain duration dependent grey matter volume (GMV) change in HZ-PHN patients. METHODS: To minimize individual differences induced error, we enrolled 12 patients with a transiti

Hemodynamic and metabolic changes in a patient with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis: evaluation using O-15 positron emission tomography.

The cerebral hemodynamics and oxygen metabolism before and after the recanalization of the occluded sinus were evaluated using O-15 positron emission tomography (PET) scanning in a 21-year-old woman with superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. During the initial presentation, there was increased regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) in the left frontal and parietal lobes with moderately increased rCBV in the right parietal lobe. Recanalization of the occluded sinus resulted in a normalization of elevated rCBV in the frontal and parietal lobes and improvements of rCBF and regional cerebral metaboli

Abnormal activation of the occipital lobes during emotion picture processing in major depressive disorder patients.

A large number of studies have demonstrated that depression patients have cognitive dysfunction. With recently developed brain functional imaging, studies have focused on changes in brain function to investigate cognitive changes. However, there is still controversy regarding abnormalities in brain functions or correlation between cognitive impairment and brain function changes. Thus, it is important to design an emotion-related task for research into brain function changes. We selected positive, neutral, and negative pictures from the International Affective Picture System. Patients with majo

Multiple system atrophy with remarkable frontal lobe atrophy.

The autopsy findings of a multiple system atrophy (MSA) patient with remarkable frontal lobe atrophy are described. The patient was a 65-year-old woman with a 13-year history of untreatable parkinsonism, dysautonomia and progressive motor aphasia. The brain weight was 810 g, and there was remarkable atrophy of the cerebrum predominantly in the frontal lobe, striatum, pons and cerebellum. Microscopic examination revealed a preserved cortical structure with laminar gliosis in the sixth layer of the precentral and superior frontal gyri of the frontal lobe, and postcentral gyrus and inferior parie

The effects of total sleep deprivation on cerebral responses to cognitive performance.

We review the findings from a study utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) to examine the effects of total sleep deprivation (TSD) on verbal learning, arithmetic, and divided attention. For verbal learning and divided attention, TSD was associated with increased activation in the bilateral prefrontal cortex and parietal lobes. Increased sleepiness after TSD and lower levels of memory impairment were correlated with increased activation in specific regions of the prefrontal cortex and parietal lobes, respectively. The arithmetic task led to significantly decreased activation in

Relationship between regional relative theta power and amyloid deposition in mild cognitive impairment: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities, such as increased theta power, have been proposed as biomarkers for neurocognitive disorders. Advancements in amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) imaging have enhanced our understanding of the pathology of neurocognitive disorders, such as amyloid deposition. However, much remains unknown regarding the relationship between regional amyloid deposition and EEG abnormalities. This study aimed to explore the relationship between regional EEG abnormalities and amyloid deposition in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METH

Primary angiitis of the central nervous system mimicking tumor-like lesion--case report.

A 60-year-old man presented with a rare case of primary angiitis of the central nervous system mimicking a tumor-like lesion and manifesting as slight disorientation, left hemiparesis, and motor aphasia. Computed tomography showed multiple low density lesions in the left frontal lobe, brain stem, and right parietal lobe. Magnetic resonance images revealed a slightly enhanced mass lesion in the right parietal lobe with surrounding brain edema. Serum, cerebrospinal fluid, and other image examinations did not show any abnormal findings, so surgical removal of the right parietal mass was performed

The sulci of the lateral superior parietal lobule: anatomical overview and nomenclatural consideration.

Discrepancies in the terminology describing sulcal structures within the lateral superior parietal lobule prompted our comprehensive investigation to clarify their morphology and nomenclature. We reviewed literature from the 19th century to the present, focusing on the intraparietal sulcus, interparietal sulcus, superior parietal sulcus, transverse parietal sulcus, paroccipital sulcus, and transverse occipital sulcus. Additionally, we analyzed neuroimaging data from 40 healthy young adults and two cadavers. Our investigation revealed that the original term intraparietal sulcus, introduced by S

The presence of occlusion affects electroencephalogram activity patterns when the target is occluded and immediately before occlusion.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to clarify the differences in electroencephalogram (EEG) activity patterns during the eye movements required to trace visible and occluded moving targets with millisecond temporal resolution. METHODS: To achieve this objective, we simultaneously measured EEG and eye-tracking during a task that required tracking moving targets that were partially occluded. These EEG and eye tracker parameters were compared with those of a nonoccluded task, a control task in which the moving target was fully visible. RESULTS: Differences in EEG activity patterns in th

Value-Biased Competition in the Auditory System of the Brain.

Attentional capture by previously reward-associated stimuli has predominantly been measured in the visual domain. Recently, behavioral studies of value-driven attention have demonstrated involuntary attentional capture by previously reward-associated sounds, emulating behavioral findings within the visual domain and suggesting a common mechanism of attentional capture by value across sensory modalities. However, the neural correlates of the modulatory role of learned value on the processing of auditory information has not been examined. Here, we conducted a neuroimaging study on human particip

Integration of representations is key to the enactment benefit: Insights from individuals with stroke lesions.

Previous research has suggested that performing an action during encoding, related to the meaning of a target word (known as 'enactment'), benefits later memory retrieval relative to when the word is simply read. It has been suggested that enactment confers this memory benefit by promoting the formation of a multimodal memory trace through the integration of verbal and motoric representations, facilitated by the parietal lobe. More recent work has proposed that cognitive planning preceding the execution of enactment, via engagement of frontal lobe-based processes, is most critical for the memo

Regional Cerebral Blood Flow SPECT and MRI in Logopenic Variant Primary Progressive Aphasia.

We report a 61-year-old woman who presented because of gradually progressive speech disorders. MRI scan revealed left temporal lobe atrophy with ex vacuo dilatation of the temporal horn and atrophy of the left inferior frontal gyrus and the left inferior parietal lobe. These findings in brain perfusion SPECT corresponded to a generalized hypoperfusion of the left hemisphere, particularly prominent on the rear parietal cortex and the temporal lobe. After taking into consideration the clinical presentation and imaging findings on MRI and SPECT, the diagnosis of the logopenic variant of primary p
