Patient-Reported Outcome Measures of Psychosocial Quality of Life in Oropharyngeal Cancer Patients: A Scoping Review.

Background: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) patients are burdened by the effect of the disease process and treatment toxicities on organs important in everyday activities, such as breathing, speaking, eating, and drinking. There is a rise in OPSCC due to human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated OPSCC, affecting younger and healthier patients and with a better overall prognosis. Emphasis must be shared between oncologic outcomes and the effects on quality of life. While there have been efforts to study global and physical quality of life, the impact on psychosocial quality of life h

Comparing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Pain in Women With Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Scoping Review.

Women with pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) typically undergo surgery involving transvaginal mesh implants; however, transvaginal mesh surgery is associated with many adverse events including post-surgical pain. Assessment of pain as a symptom is necessary using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). This scoping review aimed to describe and compare existing PROMs previously used to measure pain in women with PFDs. A scoping search of Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL Plus, Ovid PsycInfo, and grey literature was conducted. Studies published in English describing the development, implementation, an

Most-Cited Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Within Otolaryngology-Revisiting the Minimal Clinically Important Difference: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) allow clinicians and researchers to assess health-related information from a patient's perspective. These measures have been used more frequently over the last several decades, but an associated minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is needed to optimize their utility. This narrative review identified the top 100 most-cited otolaryngology-related PROM development and validation publications and assessed the presence and characteristics of the PROMs' associated MCID. OBSERVATIONS: In this narrative review, a literature search in Sc

Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System Measures for Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Arthrodesis in Lesser Toe Deformities.

Although hammertoe (HT) is a common complaint among foot patients, there is little consensus on the best surgical approach for correction. These authors hypothesized that the use of a headless intramedullary screw across both the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) and distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) would decrease many post-surgical complications, such as infection, pain, and mallet toe deformity, found in traditional HT corrective surgical techniques. In this retrospective cohort study, N = 163 adult patients who had undergone DIPJ/PIPJ arthrodesis for HT correction at least 1 year pri

Use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in the Surgical Treatment of Hidradenitis Suppurativa: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is considered to be the best treatment for recurrent hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Although it is necessary to assess the effect on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are scarce and heterogeneously used in the literature about the surgical treatment of HS. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to provide a review of the complete literature for different PROMs used in the surgical treatment of HS and to assess their methodological qualities. METHODS: A systematic literature search of PubMed, Medline, Cochrane, CINAHL, and Emb

Content validity of patient-reported outcome measures for patients with chronic pain: considering the patient's perspective.

Understanding chronic pain and disability requires a consideration of the lived experience of the patient. There is limited evaluation of the content validity of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in chronic pain using a comprehensive biopsychosocial view of the patient's experience. To address this gap, this study aimed to evaluate the content validity of PROMs for patients with chronic pain. A literature review was performed to identify PROMs for patients with chronic pain. Concepts from PROMs were linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF)

Comparison of 2 Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Brachial Plexus Birth Injury: A Systematic Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures are integral to clinical practice. While new instruments bring updated methodology and delivery methods, they must be compared with existing measures to ensure that they are comparable with currently used instruments and allow ongoing comparison. In this study, we evaluated 2 PRO measures for patients with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI): the legacy Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) and the newer Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS). We hypothesized that the PROMIS and PODCI would be correl

Characterising recovery following abdominal aortic aneurysm repair using cardiopulmonary exercise testing and patient reported outcome measures.

PURPOSE: Surgery is associated with a post-operative stress response, changes in cardiopulmonary reserve, and metabolic demand. Here recovery after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair is investigated using cardiopulmonary exercise testing and patient-reported questionnaires. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing open (n = 21) or endovascular (n = 21) repair undertook cardiopulmonary exercise tests, activity, and health score questionnaires pre-operatively and, 8 and 16 weeks, post-operatively. Oxygen uptake and ventilatory parameters were measured, and routine blood tests were undertaken.

Patient-Reported Experience and Outcome Measures in People Living with Diabetes: A Scoping Review of Instruments.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a global public health concern, with over 463 million people living with this chronic disease. Pathology complexity, management difficulty, and limited participation in care has resulted in healthcare systems seeking new strategies to engage people living with diabetes. Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were developed to address the gap between the healthcare system expectation and patient preference. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to review the existing literature on PREMs and PROMs specific to type 1 and

Reliability and validity of commonly used patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Many patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been utilized to assess outcomes after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). However, most are not specifically designed for UKA and the measurement properties of these PROMs have never been elucidated in the setting of UKA. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of commonly used PROMs after UKA, which includes the Oxford knee score (OKS), Knee Society Score (KSS)-function score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS).
