Local cues enable classification of image patches as surfaces, object boundaries, or illumination changes.

To correctly parse the visual scene, one must detect edges and determine their underlying cause. Previous work has demonstrated that neural networks trained to differentiate shadow and occlusion edges exhibit sensitivity to boundary sharpness and texture differences. Here, we investigate whether human observers are also sensitive to these cues using synthetic edge stimuli formed by quilting together two natural textures, allowing us to parametrically manipulate boundary sharpness, texture modulation, and luminance modulation. Observers classified five sets of synthetic boundary images as shado

Decoding visual object recognition from EEG signals.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and clinical EEG require compact and interpretable decoders, yet scalp sensors mix cortical signals and blur frequency-specific activity. Identifying which cortical regions and features carry discriminative visual information enables efficient, anatomically grounded object recognition decoding. This study localizes the cortical sources of informative EEG signals and identifies compact, mechanism-guided features that are most efficient given fixed data or compute budgets. To address this, we construct a source-space decoding pipeline that projects sensor signals

Encoding of 3D physical dimensions by face-selective cortical neurons.

Neurons throughout the primate inferior temporal (IT) cortex respond selectively to visual images of faces and other complex objects. The response magnitude of neurons to a given image often depends on the size at which the image is presented, usually on a flat display at a fixed distance. While such size sensitivity might simply reflect the angular subtense of retinal image stimulation in degrees, one unexplored possibility is that it tracks the real-world geometry of physical objects, such as their size and distance to the observer in centimeters. This distinction bears fundamentally on the

More Than the Face: Representations of Bodies in the Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Visual representations of bodies, in addition to those of faces, contribute to the recognition of con- and heterospecifics, to action recognition, and to nonverbal communication. Despite its importance, the neural basis of the visual analysis of bodies has been less studied than that of faces. In this article, I review what is known about the neural processing of bodies, focusing on the macaque temporal visual cortex. Early single-unit recording work suggested that the temporal visual cortex contains representations of body parts and bodies, with the dorsal bank of the superior temporal sulcus

A Reading Model from the Perspective of Japanese Orthography: Connectionist Approach to the Hypothesis of Granularity and Transparency.

This study presents a computer simulation model of reading in Japanese syllabic kana and morphographic kanji. The model was based on the simulation model developed by Harm and Seidenberg for reading in English. The purpose of building the current model was to verify the validity of the hypothesis of granularity and transparency (HGT) postulated by Wydell and Butterworth, focusing on the granularity dimension. The HGT was developed in order to explain the behavioral dissociation between excellent reading skills in Japanese and poor reading skills in English of an English-Japanese bilingual indi

Improvements in reading accuracy as a result of increased interletter spacing are not specific to children with dyslexia.

Recently, increased interletter spacing (LS) has been studied as a way to enhance reading fluency. It is suggested that increased LS improves reading performance, especially in poor readers. Theoretically, these findings are well substantiated as a result of diminished crowding effects. Empirically, however, findings on LS are inconclusive. In two experiments, we examined whether effects of increased LS are specific to children with dyslexia and whether increased LS affects word or sentence processing. In the first experiment, 30 children with dyslexia and 30 controls (mean age=9years 11months

Eye Movements and Articulations During a Letter Naming Speed Task.

Naming speed (NS) refers to how quickly and accurately participants name a set of familiar stimuli (e.g., letters). NS is an established predictor of reading ability, but controversy remains over why it is related to reading. We used three techniques (stimulus manipulations to emphasize phonological and/or visual aspects, decomposition of NS times into pause and articulation components, and analysis of eye movements during task performance) with three groups of participants (children with dyslexia, ages 9-10; chronological-age [CA] controls, ages 9-10; reading-level [RL] controls, ages 6-7) to

Attentional capture by dynamic cues.

Attention orients to an object that abruptly onsets, because the object's appearance alters the visual scene. In this report, the question was whether there would, similarly, be attentional prioritization of an existing object that changes its dynamic status. Attention may be deployed immediately to the object because its new dynamic status, potentially, also could alter the visual environment. This report focused on the capture capacity of an object--made up of four spots--that abruptly began rotating, thereby endowing it with two dynamic features: motion-onset, apparent when the object trans

Is color patchy?

In many natural scenes, shadows and shading, which are primarily luminance-defined features, proliferate. Hence one might expect that the chromatic variations of natural scenes, which more faithfully represent the layout of object surfaces, will contain relatively fewer and larger uniform regions than the luminance variations, i.e., will be more "patchy." This idea was tested using images of natural scenes that were decomposed into chromatic and luminance layers modeled as the responses of the red-green, blue-yellow, and luminance channels of the human visual system. Patchiness was defined as

Crowding--an essential bottleneck for object recognition: a mini-review.

Crowding, generally defined as the deleterious influence of nearby contours on visual discrimination, is ubiquitous in spatial vision. Crowding impairs the ability to recognize objects in clutter. It has been extensively studied over the last 80 years or so, and much of the renewed interest is the hope that studying crowding may lead to a better understanding of the processes involved in object recognition. Crowding also has important clinical implications for patients with macular degeneration, amblyopia and dyslexia. There is no shortage of theories for crowding-from low-level receptive fiel

The neural basis of the behavioral face-inversion effect.

Two of the most robust markers for "special" face processing are the behavioral face-inversion effect (FIE)-the disproportionate drop in recognition of upside-down (inverted) stimuli relative to upright faces-and the face-selective fMRI response in the fusiform face area (FFA). However, the relationship between these two face-selective markers is unknown. Here we report that the behavioral FIE is closely associated with the fMRI response in the FFA, but not in other face-selective or object-selective regions. The FFA and the face-selective region in the superior temporal sulcus (f_STS), but no

Report order and identification of multidimensional stimuli: a study of event-related brain potentials.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of order of report on multidimensional stimulus identification. Subjects were required to identify each two-dimensional symbol by pushing corresponding buttons on the keypad on which there were two columns representing the two dimensions. Order of report was manipulated for the dimension represented by the left or right column. Both behavioral data and event-related potentials were recorded from 14 college students. Behavioral data analysis showed that order of report had a significant effect on response times. Such results were consistent

A distributed, developmental model of word recognition and naming.

A parallel distributed processing model of visual word recognition and pronunciation is described. The model consists of sets of orthographic and phonological units and an interlevel of hidden units. Weights on connections between units were modified during a training phase using the back-propagation learning algorithm. The model simulates many aspects of human performance, including (a) differences between words in terms of processing difficulty, (b) pronunciation of novel items, (c) differences between readers in terms of word recognition skill, (d) transitions from beginning to skilled read

[Possibilities for quantifying vestibular vertigo].

The problem of the quantification of vertigo is still unsolved. In this article, two methods in the field of visual orientation in which the vestibular system is involved, are proposed. The visual subjective vertical allows to determine the degree of deviations, which is augmented in acute vestibular lesions. - The degree of deviation correlates well with the subjective intensity of vertigo. Both methods seem to be useful in the quantification of subjective vestibular complaints.

The differential effect of optic nerve disease on pattern and focal electroretinograms.

We studied nine cases of retrobulbar neuritis with confirmed multiple sclerosis and six cases of optic atrophy from other causes. Pattern and focal electroretinograms (macular ERGs) were recorded with high (400 cd/m2) and low (40 cd/m2) intensity stimuli. Contrast sensitivity was also measured with a simple printed test. Luminance was not markedly important. High spatial frequency contrast sensitivity was significantly correlated with pattern ERG amplitude. Pattern and focal ERG amplitude ratio was usually reduced, but the effect was not correlated with contrast sensitivity or large enough to

Ideogram reading in normal and dyslexic children.

This study was concerned with the ideogram reading performances of groups of reading disabled and normal children. While adults with acquired alexia have associated defects in ideogram reading, all of the dyslexic children performed at normal adult levels. It was found that ideogram reading in control children is rather slow to develop, with only 7 and 8 year old subjects performing like normal adults; this is in contrast to other reading-related cognitive tasks in which normal performance develops earlier.

The role of statistical image features in material perception: psychophysics and EEG decoding with natural and synthesized images.

The present study investigated the extent to which human perception of surface materials and their physical properties depend on low-level and high-level image statistics. Using 200 images of real-world surfaces from 10 material categories, along with their corresponding Portilla-Simoncelli synthesized images preserving low-level statistics and style-synthesized images preserving feature statistics in CNN, we examined whether material categorization performance, ratings of surface properties, and material decoding accuracy from visual evoked potentials (VEPs) differed between the synthesized a

Hierarchical organization of social action features along the lateral visual pathway.

Recent theoretical work has argued that in addition to the classical ventral (what) and dorsal (where/how) visual streams, there is a third visual stream on the lateral surface of the brain specialized for processing social information. Like visual representations in the ventral and dorsal streams, representations in the lateral stream are thought to be hierarchically organized. However, no prior studies have comprehensively investigated the organization of naturalistic, social visual content in the lateral stream. To address this question, we curated a naturalistic stimulus set of 250 3-s vid

Functional connectivity and the failure to retrieve meaning from shape in visual object agnosia.

The neural mechanisms underlying the access to object knowledge from early representations of shape are little known. Functional imaging studies support the view that representations of visual properties are distributed across occipito-temporal cortex of both cerebral hemispheres. By contrast, brain lesion studies show that focal occipito-temporal damage may lead to object agnosia - a specific impairment of object recognition. How does distributed processing fit with functional specialization implied by the existence of stimulus-specific agnosias? Using fMRI we studied functional connectivity
