The associations of everyday and major discrimination exposure with violence and poor mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research on discrimination and risks for violence and mental health issues under the pandemic is notably absent. We examined the relative effects of perceived everyday discrimination (e.g., poorer service, disrespectful treatment in a typical week) and major experiences of race-based discrimination (e.g., racial/ethnic discrimination in housing or employment at any point in the lifetime) on experiences of violence and the PHQ-4 assessment of symptoms of depression and anxiety under the pandemic. We analyzed state-representative cross-sectional survey data from California adults (<I>N</I> = 211

HIV risk perception and PrEP uptake among black MSM in Mississippi.

INTRODUCTION: Rates for HIV are disproportionately higher for Black men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to other MSM in the U.S. While there is evidence that low perceived risk of HIV infection may increase HIV vulnerability, few studies have examined this relationship among Black MSM in the Southern U.S. where the HIV rates are the highest in the country. This study examined the association between perceived HIV risk and PrEP adoption among Black MSM in a medium-size city in Mississippi. METHODS: Data were drawn from a subsample of the "ACCELERATE!" intervention, an innovative and susta

An international tournament of risk factors for radical intentions: evidence from 40 countries.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the risk factors linked to violent extremism remains a central challenge in radicalization research. This study examined which risk factors are most robustly associated with radical intentions-the willingness to use violence in support of an ideology. METHODS: Using general-population samples from 40 countries (N = 10,407) and a complementary sample of incarcerated jihadists (N = 80), we placed the 12 strongest established correlates identified in Wolfowicz's (2021) meta-analysis into direct multivariate competition. Analyses included conditional random forests, mu

Intersectional discrimination and noncommunicable disease risk factors among sexual minority men of color.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority men (SMM) of color face disproportionate risk for noncommunicable diseases (eg, hypertension) and associated risk factors (eg, substance use) due to intersecting ethnoracial and heterosexist stressors. Existing research often examines experiences of ethnoracial and heterosexist discrimination separately, thereby overlooking the distinct nature of intersectional discrimination. PURPOSE: We used 2 independent samples of SMM of color to examine (1) the impact of intersectional discrimination on noncommunicable disease outcomes and risk factors above and beyond experie

Experiences of Racial Discrimination Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults of Color and Nursing Home Staff of Color

Abstract This symposium will present results of three qualitative studies that explored experiences of racial discrimination among older adults and their professional caregivers. Our first study reports on interviews conducted with older community-dwelling African American adults about their perceptions of and experiences with structural racial discrimination. Participants reported exposure that has accumulated over the life course and across contexts, including through limited access to educational and employment opportunities and disproportionate exposure to neighborhood violence and unhealt

Racial discrimination is associated with binge-eating disorder in early adolescents: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic discrimination are known stressors and are associated with negative psychological and physical health outcomes. Previous studies have found relationships between racial/ethnic discrimination and binge-eating disorder (BED), though they have mainly focused on adult populations. The aim of this study was to determine associations between racial/ethnic discrimination and BED in a large, national cohort study of early adolescents. We further sought to explore associations between the racial/ethnic discrimination perpetrator (students, teachers, or other adults) and BE

Experience of social discrimination correlates with neurometabolism: a pilot study in heroin addicts.

Experimental social neuroscience has shown that being socially excluded is processed in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). We hypothesize that a chronic form of social exclusion resembling one aspect of social stigmatization is associated with altered neural plasticity reflected by neurometabolic alterations in the ACC. To test this hypothesis, a highly stigmatized patient group of heroin addicts (N = 15) during opiate maintenance therapy rated a questionnaire about being stigmatized, and neurometabolic markers in the ACC were determined using (1)H MR spectroscopy. We found a negative correl

Multi-Item Discriminability Pattern to Faces in Developmental Prosopagnosia Reveals Distinct Mechanisms of Face Processing.

Previous studies have shown that individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP) show specific deficits in face processing. However, the mechanism underlying the deficits remains largely unknown. One hypothesis suggests that DP shares the same mechanism as normal population, though their faces processing is disproportionally impaired. An alternative hypothesis emphasizes a qualitatively different mechanism of DP processing faces. To test these hypotheses, we instructed DP and normal individuals to perceive faces and objects. Instead of calculating accuracy averaging across stimulus items, we

Temporal integration in the perception and discrimination of solid shape.

Two experiments evaluated the importance of temporal integration for the perception and discrimination of solid object shape. In Experiment 1, observers anorthoscopically viewed moving or stationary cast shadows of naturally shaped solid objects (bell peppers, Capsicum annuum) through narrow (4-mm wide) slits. At any given moment, observers could only see a very small portion of the overall object shape (generally less than 10%). The results showed that the observers' discrimination performance for the moving cast shadows was much higher than that obtained for the stationary shadows, demonstra

Associations between weight discrimination and metabolic health: A cross sectional analysis of middle aged adults.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent with the recent rise in overweight and obesity, concerns with weight discrimination have arisen. Individuals who have experienced weight discrimination report a host of deteriorations related to physical and psychological health, which may co-exist with behaviours such as increased food consumption and decreases in physical activity that make weight management difficult. What remains less clear, however, is the extent to which metabolic health may be specifically affected, and how this may vary by setting and perceived intensity of the lifetime history of weight discrimi

Perceived determinants of mental health for bisexual people: a qualitative examination.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the determinants of mental health, as perceived by bisexual people, in order to begin understanding the disparities in the rates of mental health problems reported by bisexual people versus those reported by heterosexual people, and, in many studies, gay men and lesbians. METHODS: Our community-based participatory action research project comprised focus groups and semistructured interviews with 55 bisexual people across the province of Ontario, Canada. RESULTS: Perceived determinants of emotional well-being identified by participants could be classified as macrolevel

Aberrant Cardiac Interoception in Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: There is mounting evidence that cardiac interoception, the perception of one's heartbeat, is central to affective experiences. It has been proposed that symptoms of psychosis could arise from interoceptive dysfunction. Here we hypothesized that people with psychotic disorders would have a specific impairment in cardiac interoception, over and above broader perceptual deficits. STUDY DESIGN: 43 adults with a history of psychosis (31 schizophrenia, 12 schizoaffective disorder) and 41 matched control participants completed a heart rate discrimination task. Participants

Multiple discriminations experienced by people living with HIV in France: results from the ANRS-Vespa2 study.

Since the advent of AIDS, discrimination has remained at the core of the experience of people living with HIV (PLHIV). PLHIV who belong to minority groups are exposed to discrimination not only on the grounds of their HIV infection but also because of rejecting attitudes towards drug users, homosexuals and black people. This article aimed to measure the frequency of discrimination and assess its correlates among PLHIV in France. We used data from a national representative survey, the ANRS-Vespa2 study, conducted in France in 2011 among 3022 male and female HIV-positive patients followed at hos

The Intertwined Victimhood Narrative and the Challenge to Chinese Men's Gender Role Legitimacy.

Gender inequality is often framed in terms of women's disadvantage, whereas men's gender-role constraints are overlooked or discussed in opposition to gender equality. We introduce the Intertwined Victimhood Narrative (IVN), which frames men's and women's constraints as interconnected consequences of a shared gender-role system. Two experiments recruited Chinese men through Credamo and randomly assigned them to narrative conditions. Study 1 (N = 200) compared the IVN with a Women-Centric Victimhood Narrative (WCVN) to test whether it would increase men's recognition of constraints affecting th

Work and well-being in TGNC adults: The moderating effect of workplace protections.

The present study used a psychology of working theory (PWT) framework to test the direct and indirect relations of perceived social status and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) marginalization (i.e., victimization, nonaffirmation of gender identity, negative expectations for the future) with work volition, overqualification, and vocational and emotional well-being outcomes (i.e., job satisfaction, meaningful work, satisfaction with life, depression) in a sample of 175 TGNC working adults. This study also tested the moderating effect of one form of structural marginalization (lack of

Epidemiology of trauma: Childhood adversities, neighborhood problems, discrimination, chronic strains, life events, and daily hassles among people with a severe mental illness.

Trauma during childhood and adolescence is a common event among people with a serious psychological disorder. Few studies assess a wide range of stressors for this population. This is surprising given that these stressful events are implicated in poorer outcomes related to course and treatment of mental health problems. This study of 214 people with serious mental illness examines the prevalence of childhood traumas, perceived neighborhood problems, discrimination, chronic strains, negative life events, and daily hassles. We use regression analyses to determine if these stressors are associate

Discrimination, Smoking, and Cardiovascular Disease Risk: A Moderated Mediation Analysis With MESA.

BACKGROUND: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque are reliable indicators of cardiovascular disease risk, and research highlights that racial and ethnic minority individuals generally exhibit higher cIMT and carotid plaque than White individuals. At present, the mechanisms driving these disparities among different racial and ethnic and biological sex groups are poorly understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data came from the baseline examination of MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). A total of 6814 participants aged 45 to 84 years free of clinical cardiovascular diseas

Racial discrimination, racial trauma, and complex post-traumatic stress disorder: the role of emotion dysregulation as a mediating factor in Black, African, and Afrodiasporic people in Germany.

Background: Little is known about how racial discrimination affects the mental health of Black, African, and Afrodiasporic people in Germany. Empirical evidence has begun to point to racial trauma and (complex-)post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a possible consequence of experiencing racial discrimination, but knowledge on how individual psychological processes may influence the development of racial trauma and PTSD is scarce. Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the influence of racial discrimination on racial trauma and symptoms of PTSD and complex PTSD in Black, African, a

Associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life: the buffering effects of social support networks.

Stress and discrimination negatively affect quality of life, but social support may buffer their effects. This study aims: (1) to examine the associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL); and (2) to assess whether social support, stress and discrimination interact to modify their associations with OHRQoL. We used cross-sectional household-based data from a study including 396 individuals aged 14 years and over from families registered for government social benefits in a city in Southern Brazil. OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Imp
