Follow-up of square drawing test in vestibular neuronitis.

The square drawing test (SDT) devised by Sekitani (1975), which is a modification of Fukuda's vertical writing test, was performed to evaluate vestibular dysfunction in 15 patients with vestibular neuronitis followed up for a long period. In particular, two parameters (distance and total length) were analyzed in the present study. Distance was analyzed by dividing the 15 cases into 3 groups. The largest group showed a tendency to shorten at an early stage. Total length was examined by dividing the 15 cases into 3 groups. The largest group showed a tendency towards macrographism at an early sta

Visual agnosia: a case of reduced attentional "spotlight"?

A case study is presented of a patient with presenile dementia, for whom the dominant clinical feature from onset was a visual agnosia. The characteristics of the patient's visual agnosia were investigated in light of her apparent use of a "feature-by-feature" strategy to identify objects. Results from various tasks showed that the patient was unable to use global shape information or other grossly defined property cues characteristic of a "wide angle" attentional processing stage (Treisman, 1988) in object recognition. The patient appeared instead to rely on 'parts' or identifying features of

Collaborative optimization method of imaging consistency for near-eye display with dual focal planes and spatial multiplexing.

The vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) constitutes a core bottleneck limiting the immersion and comfort of near-eye displays. Although spatially multiplexed dual focal plane display technology offers a viable path to mitigate VAC, its development is constrained by image quality mismatch between the two focal planes caused by differences in virtual image distance, as well as harmful system parallax generated during binocular extension. This paper proposes an innovative co-design optimization framework for imaging consistency to systematically address these challenges. The framework first est

Enhancing Ishihara and educational images using machine learning: toward accessible learning for colorblind individuals.

Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) affects over 300 million individuals worldwide, with protanopia and deuteranopia being the most common subtypes, causing red-green confusion. This study leverages machine learning to (a) classify reference (considered as normal vision) and simulated protanopia and deuteranopia Ishihara plate images, (b) generate corresponding enhanced versions of these images, and (c) provide improved textbook diagrams (from NCERT books) and other pseudochromatic figures for CVD students, validated through feedback from diagnosed individuals. Tritanopia and milder forms of CVD wer

Multimodal mapping of balance dysfunction in Parkinson's disease: a consensus roadmap for research and intervention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Balance depends on accurate perception of self-motion and verticality and on multisensory integration for stance, and gait. In Parkinson's disease, balance is commonly impaired and variably affected by treatment. Although vestibular and multisensory contributions are increasingly recognized, progress is limited by fragmented evidence, inconsistent methods, and artifact-prone measures. We provide a consensus roadmap across four domains - video-oculography/vHIT, VEMPs, posturography, and perceptual paradigms - to improve clinical translation of balance research in Parkinson's

A neurological perspective on Tarsila do Amaral's "Abaporu": migraine aura inspiring art?

Tarsila do Amaral's painting "Abaporu" is a seminal work in Brazilian modernist art, yet its interpretation continues to intrigue scholars due to its complex symbolism. To examine "Abaporu" through the perspective of neuroesthetics, exploring potential parallels between its visual elements and sensory disturbances characteristics of migraine aura.A structured review of primary and secondary art-historical sources and a systematic literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar were conducted. The analysis focused on Amaral's recurrent use of disproportion and gigantism in the 1920s and on evalua

The bodily self in fibromyalgia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of body image, body representation, and interoceptive dysfunction.

Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic pain condition associated with widespread symptoms and perceptual distortions beyond nociception. Alterations in body image, body representation, and interoception may contribute to symptom severity and reduced quality of life. This review synthesizes evidence related to body image in adults with fibromyalgia. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Eligible studies included quantitative and qualitative designs examining body image, body awareness, and body esteem

Drops in confidence precede symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Mental health symptoms, like those in obsessive-compulsive disorder, show pronounced fluctuations over time. However, little is known about the underlying factors driving these fluctuations. Whilst theoretical accounts propose that cognitive processes drive symptom variability, cross-sectional work is unable to effectively probe these mechanisms. Based on prevailing notions of doubt and underconfidence being cognitive hallmarks of the disorder, we investigate whether metacognitive processes correspond to obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms. We employ a smartphone-based momentary assessment

Exploring Visuo-Tactile Temporal Binding Window Plasticity in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Multisensory integration (MSI) enables the brain to combine sensory inputs by defining spatial and temporal boundaries that determine whether stimuli originate from the same event. Among these, the temporal binding window (TBW) specifically refers to the temporal range within which stimuli are perceived as simultaneous and integrated. In adulthood, TBW can be narrowed through short-term perceptual training. Altered TBW plasticity has been linked to neuropsychiatric conditions, where atypical prior weighting distorts sensory integration. This study investigates obsessive-compulsive

Multisensory hallucinations and other unusual sensory experiences in the context of migraine: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Visual auras in migraine have been extensively studied, but less is known about multisensory hallucinations or other unusual sensory experiences, including whether these should be diagnostically considered as part of aura symptoms. The current study aimed to conduct a systematic review and synthesis to bring together existing empirical evidence on these non-visual perceptual experiences, focusing on their phenomenological descriptions and clinical correlates. METHODS: Forty-eight relevant studies were included based on a systematic search across PsycINFO APA and Web

Effects of selective auditory-nerve damage on the behavioral audiogram and temporal integration in the budgerigar.

Auditory-nerve fibers are lost steadily with age and as a possible consequence of noise-induced glutamate excitotoxicity. Auditory-nerve loss in the absence of other cochlear pathologies is thought to be undetectable with a pure-tone audiogram while degrading real-world speech perception (hidden hearing loss). Perceptual deficits remain unclear, however, due in part to the limited behavioral capacity of existing rodent models to discriminate complex sounds. The budgerigar is an avian vocal learner with human-like behavioral sensitivity to many simple and complex sounds and the capacity to mimi

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome as a Presenting Manifestation of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

Background: Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by distortions of visual perception (metamorphopsias), the body image, and the experience of time, along with derealization and depersonalization. Some 85% of patients present with perceptual distortions in a single sensory modality, e.g., only visual or only somesthetic in nature. Moreover, the majority experience only a single type of distortion, e.g., only micropsia or only macropsia. AIWS has many different etiologies, and hence an extensive differential diagnosis. Its amenability to treatment dep

Audiological characteristics of blast-induced hearing loss and tinnitus: unique outcomes in select cases.

Auditory perceptual, electroacoustic, and questionnaire-based outcomes were examined in twenty-one adults following blast overpressures. Pure-tone thresholds, monosyllabic word recognition in quiet and in noise, wide band middle ear power reflectance, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, loudness perception, tinnitus-loudness levels, and questionnaire-based assessment of self-perceived tinnitus handicap were evaluated. Audiometric data were characterized by normal pure-tone thresholds, noise-notched profiles, downward sloping, and flat audiometric losses. Within these data, two unique and

Effect of digital noise reduction processing on subcortical speech encoding and relationship to behavioral outcomes.

Perceptual benefits from digital noise reduction (NR) vary among individuals with different noise tolerance and sensitivity to distortions introduced in NR-processed speech; however, the physiological bases of the variance are understudied. Here, we developed objective measures of speech encoding in the ascending pathway as candidate measures of individual noise tolerance and sensitivity to NR-processed speech using the brainstem responses to speech syllable /da/. The speech-evoked brainstem response was found to be sensitive to the addition of noise and NR processing. The NR effects on the co

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome as a Rare Presentation of Cryptogenic Stroke: A Case Report.

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by perceptual distortions, including alterations in body image perception and time perception. This case report presents a 94-year-old female patient who exhibited visual and auditory hallucinations, including macropsia (perception of objects as larger than their actual size), suggestive of AIWS, following an ischemic stroke. Despite initial suspicions of AIWS, imaging revealed chronic infarcts in the posterior right parietal lobe and the left occipital lobe, suggesting a stroke etiology. Management focused on sy

Fat or fiction? Effects of body size, eating pathology, and sex upon the body schema of an undergraduate population.

Although there is a growing consensus that women with anorexia nervosa have a distorted body schema, the origins of this disturbance remain uncertain. The present investigation examined the effects of body size, eating pathology, and sex upon the body schema of an at-risk, undergraduate population. In Study 1, 98 participants mentally simulated their passage through apertures. When aperture width was manipulated, narrow and broad women over- and under-estimated their spatial requirements for passage, respectively. This relationship was exacerbated by dietary restraint. When aperture height was

Children and adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder cannot move to the beat.

Children and adults with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) fail in simple tasks like telling whether two sounds have different durations, or in reproducing single durations. The deficit is linked to poor reading, attention, and language skills. Here we demonstrate that these timing distortions emerge also when tracking the beat of rhythmic sounds in perceptual and sensorimotor tasks. This contrasts with the common observation that durations are better perceived and produced when embedded in rhythmic stimuli. Children and adults with ADHD struggled when moving to the beat of rhyth

Neuropsychiatric disorders, myoclonus, and dystonia in calcification of basal ganglia pathways.

Two cases of basal ganglia calcification involving the globus pallidus are presented. Both patients had cognitive dysfunction, temporal lobe-like symptoms (including amnestic state, perceptual distortions, or complex visual hallucinations), and myoclonus. Patient 1 manifested depression, auditory hallucinations, anxiety, paranoia, and postural tremor; patient 2 manifested multifocal dystonia with dystonic tremor. These cases supplement other reports of psychotic features and dementia associated with pallidal pathology. Additionally, the phenomena encountered in these cases are considered in li
