[Microbial flora and antibiotic susceptibility of purulent tooth diseases in rabbits].

OBJECTIVE: Bacteria involved in purulent tooth disease and the most effective antibiotics were investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Swab samples were taken from 126 rabbits with facial abscesses or purulent periapical inflammation during surgical treatment. Bacteriological examination and susceptibility testing were performed. RESULTS: A wide range of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were detected. The most commonly isolated anaerobes were gram-negative rods (Prevotella sp., Fusobacterium sp., Bacteroides sp.) and gram-positive non-sporulating cocci (mostly Peptostreptococcus sp.). Of the aerob

Treponema denticola in disseminating endodontic infections.

Treponema denticola is a consensus periodontal pathogen that has recently been associated with endodontic pathology. In this study, the effect of mono-infection of the dental pulp with T. denticola and with polymicrobial "red-complex" organisms (RC) (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and T. denticola) in inducing disseminating infections in wild-type (WT) and severe-combined-immunodeficiency (SCID) mice was analyzed. After 21 days, a high incidence (5/10) of orofacial abscesses was observed in SCID mice mono-infected with T. denticola, whereas abscesses were rare in SCID mice inf

Risk factors for abscess formation during or following endodontic treatment in an outpatient setting.

This retrospective matched case-control study aimed to identify potential risk factors associated with the development of dental abscesses during or after endodontic treatment. The study analyzed data from 133 patients (74 males, 58 females; mean age 43.1 ± 16.5 years) with abscess formation of endodontic origin and compared them with a 1:1 matched control group without abscess. Matching was performed based on age and the specifically treated tooth. Collected variables included preoperative symptoms, radiographic findings, type and stage of endodontic intervention, and systemic medical conditi

Occult infection in the facial area presenting as fever of unknown origin.

Dental infections, otitis media or sinusitis may present as fever of unknown origin (FUO), lacking local symptoms and signs. Physicians are often unaware of this possibility, since current textbooks and major articles do not mention occult facial infections among the causes of FUO. Patients with FUO typically undergo a laborious series of uncomfortable, time-consuming, expensive and often unnecessary investigations in the search for the cause of pyrexia. We report five such patients from a community hospital, representing 14% of cases in a series of patients with FUO. In most of these patients

Odontogenic Cutaneous Sinus Tracts: When Dental Pathology Makes Its Mark on the Skin.

Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts are relatively rare. They consist of a sinuous channel or cord-like tissue extending from a dental infection site to the face or neck. This channel follows the path of least resistance to externalize, with its localization influenced by factors such as the proximity of the dental apex to the cortical bone and muscle attachments, root length, and the morphology of the affected jaw. Various etiologies can contribute to the development of these fistulas; however, chronic periapical abscesses caused by pulp necrosis due to dental caries represent the most common

Antibiotic prescription for endodontic infections: a survey of Brazilian Endodontists.

AIM: To investigate antibiotic prescribing habits reported by Brazilian endodontists in specific clinical situations. METHODOLOGY: Brazilian endodontists (n = 13 853) were invited to answer an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: the first part contained personal data such as age, gender, years of experience and location of endodontic practice; the second part included questions regarding their behaviour when prescribing antibiotics in dental practice. The subjects provided their registration number in the Regional Council of Dentistry (RCD) to prevent duplication o

Current practice in endodontics: 2. Diagnosis and treatment planning.

The aim of this series of six articles is to improve the quality of endodontic treatment in general dental practice by considering what is currently being taught in dental schools. This second article considers the accurate diagnosis of endodontic lesions, which frequently present as emergencies requiring prompt, rapid and efficient attention. The paper then presents the treatment normally indicated once a correct and accurate diagnosis has been made.

Salivary Metabolomics Fingerprint of Chronic Apical Abscess with Sinus Tract: A Pilot Study.

Chronic apical abscess (CAA) is a lesion of apical periodontitis mostly characterized by areas of liquefactive necrosis with disintegrating polymorphonuclear neutrophils surrounded by macrophages. Its presence leads to local bacterial infection, systemic inflammatory response, pain, and swelling. The use of a novel approach for the study of CAA, such as metabolomics, seems to be important since it has proved to be a powerful tool for biomarkers discovery which could give novel molecular insight on CAA. So, the aim of this study was to verify the possibility to identify the metabolic fingerprin

Apical actinomycosis: case report.

Actinomycosis has increasingly been recognized as a cause of persistent or recurrent periapical disease associated with endodontic therapy. After conventional root canal therapy of the lower left first and second molars, a 24-year-old woman presented with a persistent periapical lesion associated with one of the sinus tracts. The lesion was surgically removed, and actinomycosis was diagnosed on the basis of biopsy results. The clinical and histologic features of this rare condition are discussed.

Inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia caused by endodontic pathosis: a case report and review of the literature.

Sensory disturbances such as anesthesia, hypoesthesia, hyperesthesia, and paresthesia may be present in the oral cavity, stemming from many local and systemic factors. Paresthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve is quite rare because of the unique anatomy of this nerve. Among other effects, periapical lesions can damage the nerve, resulting in paresthesia of its innervated area. Only a few cases of paresthesia caused by these lesions are reported in the literature. In this report we present a case of paresthesia of the right inferior alveolar nerve; discuss the anatomy, pathobiology, and etiolo

[Cervical necrotizing fasciitis disclosing HIV infection].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressing necrotizing process which affects subcutaneous tissue and fascia. The leading cause of these infections in neck is odontogenic infection. Its occurrence is reported to be rare, but often fatal. The therapeutic regimen includes three essential principles: appropriate antimicrobial therapy, prompt surgical treatment, and supportive measures. Two cases of cervical necrotizing fasciitis revealing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are reported. Clinicians should be aware of this underlying condition, and every patient with cervical necrotizi

Porphyromonas (Bacteroides) endodontalis: its role in endodontal infections.

Porphyromonas endodontalis (formerly Bacteroides endodontalis) is a black-pigmented anaerobic Gram-negative rod which is associated with endodontal infections. It has been isolated from infected dental root canals and submucous abscesses of endodontal origin. The presence of P. endodontalis in infected dental root canals has been correlated with symptoms of an acute infection. It is occasionally found on oral mucous membranes and periodontal pockets. P. endodontalis has shown relatively low virulence in experimental monoinfections. In anaerobic mixed infections it can play an essential role. D
