Japanese quail and human acid maltase deficiency: a comparative study.

A morphological study was carried out on the skeletal muscle of a mutant Japanese quail with acid maltase deficiency (AMD). The affected quails began to experience difficulty in lifting their wings about 6 weeks after hatching. Four weeks after hatching, before symptoms appeared, alpha-1, 4-glucosidase activity in skeletal muscle was decreased to less than 10% of the control level, and muscle fibers possessed many vacuoles containing periodic acid Schiff (PAS) positive material which was digested by diastase, and showed high acid phosphatase activity. Although both red and white muscles were i

The effect of saponification on the mucopolysaccharides of the ground substance of the human brain: the relation to focal edema and multiple sclerosis.

The acid mucopolysaccharides of brain tissues are disclosed by their metachromatic staining with toluidine blue following saponification with potassium hydroxide, presumably as a result of the liberation of acid groups previously esterified. Earlier histochemical studies had disclosed the presence of neutral mucopolysaccharides by staining with the periodic acid-Schiff technique, and such staining is intensified by prior saponification. Many biochemical studies have reported the presence of both acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides in brain tissues. Within the white matter following brain edem

Whipple's disease presenting with neurological symptoms in an immunosuppressed patient.

We report an unusual case of Whipple's disease, which remained undiagnosed for several years in a patient being treated with immunosuppressive therapy for many years. The patient presented with a purpuric rash, neurological symptoms, lymphadenopathy and gastrointestinal symptoms. The diagnosis was made by endoscopic biopsy of the duodenum with periodic acid Schiff staining, as well as PCR testing on blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The patient was successfully treated with intravenous ceftriaxone, followed by oral co-trimoxazole for 1 year.

Punctal and peri-punctal involvement in Urbach-Wiethe syndrome: case report and review of literature.

Urbach-Weithe syndrome is an exceedingly rare multisystem disorder characterized by pathognomonic clinical findings of multiple beaded papules along the eyelid margins and peri-ocular areas and hoarseness of voice secondary to intercellular deposition of periodic acid Schiff (PAS)-positive hyaline material. Lacrimal drainage anomalies are not well defined in this syndrome; however, punctal involvement and acquired nasolacrimal duct obstructions have been reported. We present a patient of Urbach-Weithe syndrome with bilateral punctal and peri-punctal involvement.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis in a 67-year-old woman with Wegener's granulomatosis.

Mycophenolate mofetil (MM) is commonly used in patients with autoimmune diseases or who have undergone transplantation. Common side effects of MM include anemia, leukopenia, mucositis and opportunistic infections. We report an unusual case of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) in a 67-year-old woman on MM for Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). PAP is a disease characterized by defects in macrophage-mediated processing of surfactants, leading to accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive lipoproteinaceous material within the alveolar spaces.

An unusual case of livedoid and necrotic lesions in a drug addict.

Skin biopsies were performed in a patient with livedoid and necrotic lesions of the forearm. Periodic acid-Schiff-stained and birefringent Maltese cross-patterned foreign bodies were observed in capillary vessels. It was consistent with the diagnosis of intra-arterial injections of a substance containing corn starch. This finding confirmed the clinical diagnosis of intra-arterial injection of solubilized tablets of buprenorphine. This case constitutes a rare clinical presentation of foreign bodies injections in a drug addict.

Nocturnal urinary dopamine excretion is reduced in otherwise healthy subjects with periodic leg movements in sleep.

The pathophysiology of periodic leg movements (PLMs) in sleep remains to be elucidated. Among other hypotheses an alteration of dopaminergic function has been suggested. Nocturnal urinary dopamine and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetic acid excretion in otherwise healthy subjects with PLMs was significantly reduced (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively) compared to subjects without PLMs. This finding, for the first time, demonstrates a correlate of a functionally relevant hypoactivity of the dopaminergic system in subjects with PLMs.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia with giant intracytoplasmic inclusions--a case report.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) with intracytoplasmic inclusions is a rare and unusual subtype of acute leukaemia. Here we describe a case of ALL with intracytoplasmic inclusions in an adult female. These inclusions stained negative for Myeloperoxidase (MPO), Sudan Black E (SBB) and alpha-naphthyl acetate estarase (ANAE) and positive for Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS). This case is being presented for its unusual occurrence and to recognise the characteristics of this subtype of ALL to avoid a misdiagnosis of AML.

Ocular involvement in Whipple's disease.

A 60-year-old white man with recurrent nondeforming arthritis and no intestinal symptoms developed bilateral vitreous opacities strongly suggestive of Whipple's disease. He was successfully treated with tetracycline and erythromycin. Thirteen years later, a presumed diagnosis of Whipple's disease was established by histopathologic observation of macrophages that were distended by periodic acid-Schiff-positive material and the finding of bacilli by electron microscopy in a vitreous aspirate. The characteristics of ocular involvement in Whipple's disease are discussed.

Severe TNF receptor-associated periodic syndrome due to 2 TNFRSF1A mutations including a new F60V substitution.

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) is typically characterized by episodic fever, myalgia, skin rash, conjunctivitis, and abdominal cramps. Recently, mutations in the TNFRSF1A gene on chromosome 12p13 encoding tumor necrosis factor receptor type 1 have been linked to this autoinflammatory syndrome. We report the case of a 29-year-old white woman who experienced periodic inflammatory manifestations with fever up to 40 degrees C, leukocytosis, and elevation of C-reactive protein level (>100 mg/L) in conjunction with acute peritonitis of unknown origin since the ag

A Novel Deep Learning Approach for Analyzing Glomerular Basement Membrane Lesions in a Mouse Model of X-Linked Alport Syndrome.

Alport syndrome is a rare kidney disease typically more severe in males due to its X-linked inheritance. However, female patients with heterozygous X-linked Alport syndrome (XLAS) can develop renal failure over time, necessitating accurate pathologic assessment for effective therapy. A key pathologic finding in female patients with XLAS is the mosaic pattern of partial loss of α5 chains of type IV collagen (COL4α5). This study, using a mouse model of XLAS with a nonsense mutation (R471∗) in the Col4a5 gene, analogous to human XLAS, aimed to examine the consistency of this pattern with the glom

The Footprints of Mitochondrial Fission and Apoptosis in Fluoride-Induced Renal Dysfunction.

Fluoride (F) is widely distributed in the environment and poses serious health risks to humans and animals. Although a good body of literature demonstrates a close relationship between F content and renal system performance, there is no satisfactory information on the involved intracellular routes. Hence, this study used histopathology and mitochondrial fission to explore fluorine-induced nephrotoxicity further. For this purpose, mice were exposed to the F ion (0, 25, 50, 100 mg/L) for 90 days. The effects of different F levels on renal pathomorphology and ion metabolism were assessed using he

Goblet cell hyperplasia as a feature of neutrophilic asthma.

BACKGROUND: Goblet cell hyperplasia (GCH) is a pathological finding classically reported across asthma severity levels and usually associated with smoking. Multiple biological mechanisms may contribute to excessive mucus production. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to decipher the clinical meanings and biological pathways related to GCH in non-smokers with asthma. METHODS: Cough and sputum assessment questionnaire (CASA-Q) responses at entry and 1 year later were compared to clinical and functional outcomes in 59 asthmatic patients. GCH was assessed through periodic-acid shift (PAS) staining on endobronc

MESONEPHRIC ADENOCARCINOMA OF ENDOCERVIX WITH LOBULAR MESONEPHRIC HYPERPLASIA: CASE REPORT.

Mesonephric adenocarcinoma is a rare variant of cervical adenocarcinoma. We present a case of mesonephric adenocarcinoma of endocervix with cervical and vaginal lobular mesonephric hyperplasia in a 57-year-old woman. Vaginal bleeding persisting for 12 months was the only symptom. Histopathologic findings and characteristic immunophenotype are crucial for the diagnosis. The tumor was composed of papillary formation with a central fi brovascular stroma, villoglandular and densely compact tubular structures containing intraluminal eosinophilic secretion, and coated with one or more rows of cylind

Glomerular morphometry in childhood reflux nephropathy, emphasizing the capillary changes.

As a consequence of nephron loss, reflux nephropathy (RN) causes considerable glomerular hypertrophy. To examine the relative contributions of capillary dilatation and growth in producing hypertrophy, glomeruli contained in unscarred areas of renal biopsies from 19 children with RN were compared with those in 16 children with minimal change nephrotic syndrome and 16 with recurrent hematuria, who were used as controls representing normal childhood growth. Using computerized digitometry we measured the mean glomerular tuft area (GTA) in all complete, undistorted, nonsclerotic glomeruli in period

Duodenal bulb biopsy findings for patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia with or without Campylobacter pylori gastritis.

Duodenal bulb biopsy specimens from 85 patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia (30 of whom had normal stomachs and 52 of whom had Campylobacter pylori gastritis) were examined for the presence and amount of gastric surface epithelial metaplasia (using both the hematoxylin and eosin stain and the Alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff method), acute inflammation, and C. pylori (using the Giemsa stain). Gastric metaplasia occurred in the duodenal bulb in 61% of patients with gastric C. pylori and in an identical percentage for those who lacked C. pylori gastritis. For patients with gastric metaplasia, foci

Dermal Interstitial Glycogenosis and Stromal Senescence-Associated Marker Expression in Fibrofolliculomas: Implications for Pathogenesis and mTOR-Targeted Therapy.

Fibrofolliculomas, benign adnexal tumors often associated with Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, exhibit characteristic perifollicular epithelial and stromal proliferation. Although their clinicopathologic features are well established, the molecular and metabolic drivers of stromal remodeling remain poorly understood, particularly in sporadic cases. We investigate the presence of dermal interstitial glycogenosis (DIG) and stromal senescence in fibrofolliculomas, exploring potential mechanistic parallels with pulmonary interstitial glycogenosis and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-driven cutaneous

Clinicopathological Characteristics of Mucinous and Non-mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the Colon and Rectum.

Colorectal carcinoma is the most common cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. More than 95.0% of the cancer is adenocarcinoma. Mucinous adenocarcinomas account for about 10.0% of all colorectal cancers. The expression of mucin themselves may play a role in the ability of tumors cells to escape the effect of systemic therapy and the process of tumor progression, invasion, survival and protection against the host immune response. The mucin lakes may also be a physiological barrier for the delivery of targeted therapy to the tumors cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the morp
