Personality characteristics associated with psychological reactance.

This study compared six different personality disorders on level of psychological reactance. Eighty clients met criteria for inclusion in one of six personality disorder groups, including passive-aggressive, dependent, personality disorder NOS (not otherwise specified), no personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive, and borderline. Instruments included the Therapeutic Reactance Scale (TRS) and the Questionnaire for the Measurement of Psychological Reactance (QMPR). Four one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were conducted on the scales and subscales of the two reactance measures. All four ANOV

Personality type and neural circulatory control.

Psychosocial factors, including type A personality, anger, hostility, and anxiety, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Abnormal sympathetic responses to stress may help explain the link between certain behavior patterns and cardiovascular disease. We tested the hypothesis that in normal humans, type A personality characteristics are associated with exaggerated heart rate, pressor, and sympathetic nerve responses to mental and physical stress. We measured heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (obtained with direct intraneural recording

Defense mechanisms and personality in depression.

There is a longstanding belief that personality represents a structure that is stable over time, and changes, if at all, very slowly. Nonetheless, clinical and empirical evidence suggests that in patients with some Axis I disorders, the rate of personality disorders using DSM criteria decreases after treatment, suggesting that personality as assessed by phenomenological systems is state-dependent. An alternative to the DSM phenomenological system of conceptualizing personality is the dynamic concept of character, that is, a predictable pattern of both adaptive and pathological defense mechanis

Childhood abuse, alexithymia and personality disorder.

I examined the relationships among childhood abuse, alexithymia, and personality disorder. Participants were 60 adults who were receiving outpatient psychotherapy. Both the participants and their therapists used the Toronto Alexithymia Scale to provide independently information concerning the client's level of alexithymia. The therapists provided information concerning DSM-III-R personality disorder diagnoses, and participants completed portions of the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised. Information concerning childhood abuse history was obtained from the therapists. As expected, chi

Effects of dysthymia on personality assessment.

Twenty-eight dysthymic patients (82.1% with personality disorders) were investigated with questionnaires for personality and depression before and after treatment. When in asymptomatic state, defined by clinical criteria and HAM-D score 6 or lower, the personality profile of 15 patients (group I) was significantly changed from the one before treatment (avoidant, passive-aggressive, borderline and schizotypal dimensions were lower, and narcissistic dimension higher [P < 0.01]). Thirteen patients (group II) had an unchanged profile. The first group showed significant state-trait dependence, espe

Seamlessness in personality and its derangements.

A significant but often overlooked aspect of the circumplex structure of the domain of interpersonal functioning is its systematically continuous ordering of the quality of the behavioral variations addressed. It is a domain, in other words, explicitly lacking in categorical boundaries wherein a given behavior can be sharply discriminated from others proximal to it within a shared circumplex space; any identified border is at best a "fuzzy" one characterized by blending and interpenetration. It is argued that this observation has extended generalizability in respect to the organization of pers

Suicide among subjects with personality disorders.

OBJECTIVE: There have been few psychological autopsy studies of suicide among individuals with personality disorders. The possible specificity of characteristics of suicide among such individuals has been little investigated. METHOD: A random sample of 229 subjects who committed suicide, representing all suicide victims in Finland within a 12-month period, were comprehensively examined by using the psychological autopsy method and were diagnosed according to DSM-III-R criteria. Within this random sample the authors investigated all subjects with axis II personality disorders (N = 67) and divi

The dependent personality and interpersonal problems.

At the core of the dependent personality disorder lies an excessive reliance on other people for support, direction, and nurturance. However, because of their interpersonal style, many patients high in dependency have difficulties establishing and maintaining close interpersonal relationships. The present study examined interpersonal problems related to the dependent personality disorder. The relationships between dependency and interpersonal problems were examined in 43 adult psychiatric inpatients and 66 nonpatient adults. All subjects were assessed for social functioning in terms of social

Borderline personality disorder in major depression.

The precise interrelationship between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and major depression (MD) remains unclear. To elucidate this further, we studied the characteristics of BPD in an unselected sample of 103 depressed subjects. All subjects were evaluated with structured diagnostic instruments. We contrasted three groups (MD plus BPD, MD plus a non-BPD, and MD plus no personality disorder) across several domains (characteristics of the depressive disorder, psychometric scales, axes I and II comorbidity, early environmental indices, family psychiatric history, and treatment response). Premorbid personality in first-onset psychosis.

The data presented are those from a two-year prospective study of 69 patients identified in the Nottingham field centre of the WHO Study of Determinants of Outcome of Severe Mental Disorders. Premorbid personality, childhood adjustment and adolescent adjustment were assessed at the patients' first presentation to psychiatric services with a psychotic illness. Ratings were made blind to diagnosis. Premorbid explosive and paranoid traits were commoner in patients with schizophrenia than in patients with other non-organic psychoses, and these traits were associated with later onset of schizophren

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of DSM-III-R self-defeating personality disorder. METHOD: Applicants for inpatient treatment of personality disorders (N = 100) or psychoanalysis (N = 100) were independently evaluated face to face by experienced clinicians using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R and the Personality Disorder Examination. [The phenomenology of hysterical personality disorder].

Phenomena that are observable in the "classic" hysterical personality disorder are named, described and classified according to the basic functions of human experience and behavior. In this way, a psychopathological picture of the hysterical personality arises, which can facilitate the sometimes difficult task of diagnosis and differential diagnosis. It is shown that the phenomenon of dissociation is one essential characteristic of this disorder. The dissociation of the mental processes is demonstrated for the various basic functions. It implies a dissociation of contents and of parts of perso

Patients meeting criteria for borderline personality disorder are heterogeneous. Our studies suggest that at least two sub-types exist which benefit from specific treatments. Data will be presented which suggests that some patients who meet borderline criteria and have atypical depression (patients meeting DSM III-R criteria for major depression or dysthymia reactive wills mood and any vegetative atypical symptoms, i.e. overeating, oversleeping, rejection sensitivity, leaden paralysis) clearly benefit from treatment with antidepressant medication. Multiple personality in eating disorder patients.

Although the overlap between childhood sexual and physical abuse and eating disorders is well known, little work has been done on the sequelae of childhood trauma in eating disorder patients. Dissociative phenomena are common in adult survivors of childhood abuse, with multiple personality disorder (MPD) being the most extreme form of dissociative disorder. We describe two women who presented for inpatient treatment of eating disorders who were subsequently found to have MPD. Because the eating pathology in these patients contained atypical features related to the MPD process, uncovering MPD w

Rorschach indicators of Multiple Personality Disorder.

The increase in reported cases of Multiple Personality Disorder underscores a great need to differentiate clearly this from other psychiatric disorders and from simulation of Multiple Personality Disorder. Two sets of Rorschach signs have been advanced as clinical markers by their developers, namely Barach and also Wagner, Allison, and Wagner. As the Wagner signs are prevalent in much of the research on Rorschach responses in Multiple Personality Disorder, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate these signs using Wagner's administration and the resulting Rorschach protocols of 16 Mult

Personality disorders in obsessive compulsive disorder.

Standardized structured interview personality scales are now available that provide better reliability than clinician interview, but are still imperfect. These scales diagnose DSM III-R personality disorders, which are more illness-oriented than Freudian notions. Use of these scales has found that the majority of patients with OCD have at least one Axis II personality disorder, with most falling in cluster C. Obsessive compulsive personality disorder, as described in DSM-III-R, is, in most samples studied, present in the minority of patients with OCD, and is often less common than other person

[Personality of schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients].

At time of discharge 33 patients with ICD-9 schizophrenia and 16 patients with ICD-9 schizoaffective psychosis were assessed by the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI). Psychological profiles were analyzed individually and compared to controls. In addition, a hierarchical cluster analysis was carried out. Psychopathological findings at time of discharge were documented by the AMDP system. Impact of psychopathology on response behavior in the FPI was not evident. There were but few schizophrenic or schizoaffective patients without any abnormal FPI score. For the schizophrenics abnormal (high a

Clinical presentations of multiple personality disorder.

It is hoped that this discussion of MPD will discourage stereotypic thinking about this condition and encourage the inclusion of MPD in virtually all differential diagnoses. The major thrust of what has been learned about the natural history of MPD is that most patients with this condition spend most of their lives not manifesting their MPD in classic manner. The typical presentation of MPD is the tip of a rather large iceberg. Covert and other nonclassic presentations are much more characteristic. An appreciation of this will help the clinician approach the diagnosis of MPD with a heightened

Borderline personality disorder and group therapy.

This study examined the process and outcome of group therapy for community health center clients with borderline personality disorder. The results indicated that group members rated Yalom's curative factors to be increasingly helpful over time, and that universality and existential factors were consistently ranked as very helpful group process variables. The group sessions also were associated with positive outcomes, as evidenced by significant improvement in Goal Attainment Scale scores and the depression and hostility scales of the Brief Symptom Inventory. The results of this study suggest t

Effects of generalized malnutrition on personality.

Anecdotal reports of changes in behavior under conditions of severe, protracted food deficits are of ancient lineage, whereas the psychometric investigations of the 20th century have been concerned primarily with the impairment of intellectual functioning in children who suffer or have suffered from protein-energy malnutrition. The present overview begins with the account of systematic observations of the behavioral effects of grossly inadequate food intake in World War II camps for prisoners of war and under conditions of epidemic starvation. The presentation is centered on quantitative asses
