OBJECTIVE: Although neuropsychiatric and morphological brain alterations in acromegalic patients have been described and a distinct disease personality is clinically suspected, this has never been systematically investigated. We examined whether patients with acromegaly showed an altered personality profile compared with patients with non-functioning pituitary adenomas and healthy controls.
DESIGN AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 70 acromegalic patients and 58 patients with non-functioning pituitary adenomas were compared with 140 mentally healthy population controls, matched for a

AIM: To translate theoretical dimensions of 'social time' and 'clock time' in addiction treatment settings into empirical measures and to develop a typology of institutional time perspectives.
METHOD: From November 2001 to February 2002, a mail survey was conducted with directors of 57 alcohol and drug clinics in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Items measured the past and future orientation of the treatment programmes, elements of social time and clock time as part of organizational life and 'time bargaining' between therapists and clients.
FINDINGS: Four clusters of temporal orient

BACKGROUND: The determinants of self-esteem have been little studied in non-clinic samples. It has been suggested recently that child sexual abuse (CSA) may be a major determinant of low self-esteem in adulthood.
METHOD: The psychosocial circumstances associated with low self-esteem in two random samples of women, one reporting CSA, the other not, were compared, with particular emphasis on characteristics of family of origin. A two-phase (postal-then-interview) random community study assessed self-esteem and related variables.
RESULTS: Psychosocial variables predicting low self-esteem were t

Curiously enough, a kind of curse combined with therapeutic fatalism still hovers over bronchial asthma and a sense of hopelessness may be encountered when faced with this illness. This pessimism is totally unfounded. However, our therapeutic possibilities depend partly on a better understanding of the asthma syndrome. In the past, this condition may not have been recognised for what it is, that is to say a multi factorial syndrome resulting from the innate and the acquired, from specific (allergic) and/or non-specific factors. Undoubtedly, too much responsibility has been placed on the allerg

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and neuroticism are risk factors for internalizing psychopathology. However, their interaction has only been investigated at the self-report level, and studies elucidating their interrelationship at the neural level are lacking. We therefore investigated the interaction of trait RNT and neuroticism with respect to the dynamics of neural networks during negative self-referential processing.
METHODS: A sample of 110 healthy subjects reported trait RNT and neuroticism, followed by an RNT induction paradigm during fMRI. Dynamic coactivation pattern (

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) captures shared cognitive and emotional features of content-specific cognition, including future-focused worry and past-focused rumination. The degree to which these distinct but related processes recruit overlapping neural structures is undetermined, because most neuroscientific studies only examine worry or rumination in isolation. To address this, we developed a paradigm to elicit idiographic worries and ruminations during an fMRI scan in 39 young adults with a range of trait RNT scores. We measured concurrent emotion ratings and heart rate as a physiologi

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated how negative affect (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress) is often a correlate of and precursor to nicotine dependence. Although recent evidence shows a gradual decline in tobacco use in the United States, subgroups that report higher levels of negative affect may continue to be at risk of becoming dependent on nicotine. One high-risk subgroup is students who attend alternative high schools. The current longitudinal investigation examined the effect of negative affect on nicotine dependence in this youth population.
METHODS: 1060 students from 29 a

The present study aimed to explore the role of dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs in Eating Disorders (EDs) and their potential associations with core and comorbid symptoms. The Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6.0 (EDE-Q), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Maudsley Obsessive- Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) were used to evaluate 44 Anorexia Nervosa (AN), 50 Bulimia Nervosa (BN) patients and 37 controls. Patients featured more dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs which positively correlated with ED and comorbid symptoms.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence in the literature that adverse early attachment experiences and subsequent attachment insecurities during adulthood would lead to pessimism, low self-esteem, hopelessness and, ultimately, to suicide risk.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This paper aims to review finding on the link between attachment style and suicidality. We searched the literature using the database of the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)-MedLine/Pubmed system from January 1992 until December 2016. We started with 1992 because, as far as we know, there are no published studies ex

INTRODUCTION: Little is presently known about determinants of cardiac illness perceptions, especially regarding psycho-social factors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Questionnaire study among 97 consecutively recruited inpatients (72.2% male; mean age 60.6 years) with acute coronary syndrome. We examined the role of socio-demographic, illness-related and psycho-social factors (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, General Self-Efficacy Scale and Life Orientation Test-Revised) for perceived consequences, controllability and causes (Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire) with standard m

This study investigates the cognitive mechanisms that facilitate the transition from suicidal ideation (SI) to suicidal behavior (SB), focusing on the interplay of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), feelings of defeat, and perceptions of entrapment, both internal and external, within the framework of the Integrated Motivational-Volitional (IMV) Model. We aimed to predict group membership and identify predictors between those exhibiting SI (n = 56) and those with SB (n = 37), with particular attention to the aforementioned cognitive variables. An observational, analytical, cross-sectional stud

Background: and Objectives: This research examined whether life meaning promotes resilience to stressor-related psychological distress and repetitive negative thinking. Design and Methods: Three studies (total N = 273) used cross-sectional (Study 1) and prospective (Studies 2 and 3) designs to assess the relation between life meaning and response to various stressors. Results: Results showed that in Study 1, greater life meaning was inversely related with repetitive negative thinking and psychological distress. Further, a mediation analysis showed an indirect effect for the life meaning-repeti

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) for example, worry in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and rumination in depression, is often targeted during psychological treatments. To test the hypothesis that negative interpretation bias contributes to worry and rumination, we assessed the effects of inducing more positive interpretations in reducing RNT.
METHOD: Volunteers diagnosed with GAD (66) or depression (65) were randomly allocated to one of two versions of cognitive bias modification for interpretation (CBM-I), either with or without RNT priming prior to training, or a control con

Orthopaedic surgery often requires many months of rehabilitation to achieve a successful outcome, regardless of subspecialty. Several important psychological factors strongly influence pain perceptions, rehabilitation compliance, and patient outcomes after common orthopaedic surgeries that require extensive rehabilitation, including total joint arthroplasty, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and spine surgery for degenerative disease. Early recognition of patients exhibiting psychological distress, fear-avoidance behavior, or poor perceived self-efficacy or pessimistic personality tra

INTRODUCTION: Using the self-regulatory executive function model as a basis, this study explored whether, among substance users, metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking were associated with impulsiveness.
METHODS: A total of 100 substance users were recruited. Impulsiveness, metacognitive beliefs, rumination and worry were assessed. Correlation and hierarchal regression analyses were run.
RESULTS: Beliefs about the need to control thoughts, lower cognitive self-consciousness and brooding rumination were found to be independent predictors of the total score on impulsiveness in

Craving is thought to play an important role in alcohol use disorders. The recent inclusion of "craving" as a formal diagnostic symptom calls for further investigation of this subjective phenomenon with multiple dimensions. Considering that alcohol-dependent patients compensate negative physical/emotional states with alcohol, the aim of this study is to investigate alcohol craving and its correlation with drinking measures and affective personality dimensions. A sample of 135 alcohol-dependent patients (104 males and 31 females) was collected from a clinical setting. Subjects self-rated their

Depression is characterised by a low mood, loss of interest or pleasure, pessimism, impaired concentration, decreased energy, and fatigue. A strong relationship between inflammatory processes and the pathophysiology of depression had been identified. Studies have suggested that the NLRP3 inflammasome is a key contributor to the pathogenesis of depression. This systematic review aimed to synthesise evidence from animal models of depression to evaluate both priming and activation of the inflammasome, with a specific focus on clarifying the role in depressive pathology. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alexithymia may constrain emotion regulation, but its relevance may differ across personality configurations. This study examined whether narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry are embedded in distinct early maladaptive schema and alexithymia profiles.
METHODS: A non-clinical adult sample (N = 311) completed the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire, the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form 3, and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20. Analyses examined 18 schemas and three alexithymia components-Difficulty Identifying Feelings (DIF), Difficulty Describing Feelings

INTRODUCTION: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being increasingly integrated into radiography, affecting daily responsibilities and workflows. Most studies focus on AI's influence on clinical performance or workflows; fewer explore radiographers' perspectives on how AI affects their roles and the profession. This study aims to investigate the perceived impact of AI on radiographers' careers, roles and professional identity in the UK.
METHODS: A UK-wide, cross-sectional, online survey including 32 questions was conducted using snowball sampling to gather responses from qualified radiographers a
