The photoprocesses of berberine, palmatine, coralyne, sanguinarine, flavopereirine and ellipticine were studied in several solvents. Irradiation of the melatonin metabolite N(1)-acetyl-N(2)-formyl-5-methoxykynuramine (AFMK) with UV light of 254 nm causes the release of carbon monoxide (CO) and, thus, deformylation to N(1)-acetyl-5-methoxykynuramine (AMK). Liberation of CO was demonstrated by reduction of PdCl(2) to metallic palladium, under avoidance of actions by other reductants. Photochemical AMK formation was not due to UV-induced hydroxyl radicals, because the reaction also took place with high efficiency in ethanol and 2-propanol. Moreover, AMK was generated from AFMK by UVB on a dry thin layer chromatographic plate.

The structural dynamics of the ring-opening reaction in a photochromic indolylfulgimide, a reversible, ultrafast photoswitch, is investigated by ultra-broadband time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy. The experimentally observed vibrational modes of the indolylfulgimide photoisomers C and E are assigned to normal modes with the help of DFT calculations. A complete evaluation of the observed vibrational dynamics including excited-state vibrational modes is used to characterize the reaction path and the cooling behavior of the photoswitch.

The potential of performing photochemical studies in solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibers, "photo-SPME", to study the photodegradation of p,p'-DDT and two of its major degradation products, p,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDD, is shown. The feasibility of the trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation using solar light was investigated. With both solar light and TiO2 present, TCE was more effectively degraded than either with solar light or TiO2 alone. The rate of photocatalytic degradation under a clear sky was about five and 18 times higher than that of photocatalytic degradation under cloudy and thick cloudy skies, respectively. Drosophila melanogaster (Oregon R) males were exposed to visible light intensities varying from 0.3 to 7300 lux at environmental temperatures of 30, 35 and 37 degrees C, on a 12-h light/dark diurnal rhythm. At 30 degrees C reducing the light exposure from 7300 to 4 lux increased the median life span by 141%. At 35 degrees C reducing the light exposure from 4650 to 0.3 lux increased the life span by 389%. At 37 degrees C a reduction from 6580 to 0.3 lux increased life span by 453%. An insect cell line, IAL-PID2, was exposed to UV and analyzed for its ability to incorporate [3H]-thymidine and to elongate replicon-sized DNA fragments. After exposure to 5 or 10 J/m2 UV, the cells exhibited a rapid and prolonged depression in the rate of thymidine incorporation.
