A specific reconditioning training program implemented 12 months after ACL surgery improves lower-limb jump variables in amateur soccer players.

INTRODUCTION: Introduction Soccer players are frequently exposed to high physical demands, which increase their risk of injury, especially anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures. Despite completing standard rehabilitation protocols, many athletes show persistent functional deficits one year after surgery. This study aimed to assess the impact of a 12-week reconditioning training program, focusing on adjacent joint mobility, neuromuscular control, plyometrics, stability-landing exercises, and strength production, of amateur soccer players 12 months after undergoing anterior cruciate ligament

UEFA consensus guidelines on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in Women's football - part one: risk factors and prevention.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most burdensome injuries in women's football, carrying significant consequences for players and the football community. To develop practical, evidence-based guidelines for ACL injury prevention, UEFA convened a multidisciplinary expert panel of 31 doctors, sports scientists, physiotherapists, and a player. Using the RAND-UCLA Appropriateness Method, 101 evidence statements were synthesised from existing literature and subjected to a modified Delphi process with three rounds of confidential voting. Consensus was reached on 88 statements. T

The effects of limb dominance and a short term, high intensity exercise protocol on both landings of the vertical drop jump: implications for the vertical drop jump as a screening tool.

The effectiveness of vertical drop jumps (VDJs) to screen for non-contact ACL injuries is unclear. This may be contributed to by discrete point analysis, which does not evaluate patterns of movement. Also, limited research exists on the second landing of VDJs, potential lower limb performance asymmetries and the effect of fatigue. Statistical parametric mapping investigated the main effects of landing, limb dominance and a high intensity, intermittent exercise protocol (HIIP) on VDJ biomechanics. Twenty-two male athletes (21.9 ± 1.1 years, 180.5 ± 5.5 cm, 79.4 ± 7.8 kg) performed VDJs pre- and

Shoe collar height and heel counter-stiffness for shoe cushioning and joint stability in landing.

This study examined the effects of shoe collar-height and counter-stiffness on ground reaction force (GRF), ankle and knee mechanics in landing. Eighteen university basketball players performed drop landing when wearing shoes in different collar height (high vs. low) and counter-stiffness (stiffer vs. less stiff). Biomechanical variables were measured with force platform and motion capturing systems. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was performed with α = 0.05. Wearing high collar shoes exhibited smaller peak ankle dorsiflexion and total sagittal RoM, peak knee extension moment, but larger peak

Hop Distance Symmetry Does Not Indicate Normal Landing Biomechanics in Adolescent Athletes With Recent Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Background Return-to-sport protocols after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often include assessment of hop distance symmetry. However, it is unclear whether movement deficits are present, regardless of hop symmetry. Objectives To assess biomechanics and symmetry of adolescent athletes following ACLR during a single-leg hop for distance. Methods Forty-six patients with ACLR (5-12 months post surgery; 27 female; mean ± SD age, 15.6 ± 1.7 years) were classified as asymmetric (operative-limb hop distance less than 90% that of nonoperative limb [n = 17]) or symmetric (n = 29) in th

Immediate Effects of a Pogo-Jump Microdose on Vertical Jump Performance in Adolescent Basketball Players: A Randomized Crossover Pilot Study.

Background and Objectives: Low-volume plyometric conditioning may elicit post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE), but the early response to pogo-jump exercise in adolescent basketball players remains uncertain. This randomized crossover pilot study estimated the effect of adding 24 bilateral pogo jumps to a standardized warm-up on countermovement-jump (CMJ) and drop-jump (DJ) height, compared with time-matched low-intensity walking. Methods: Twenty-seven male basketball players were recruited, and 21 (age, 16.55 ± 0.88 years) completed both conditions. In randomized order, separated by

Increasing plantarflexion angle during landing reduces vertical ground reaction forces, loading rates and the hip's contribution to support moment within participants.

The ankle joint's role in shock absorption during landing has been researched in many studies, which have found that landing with higher amounts of plantarflexion (PF) results in lower peak vertical ground reaction forces and loading rates. However, there has not yet been a study that compares drop landings within participants along a quantitative continuum of PF angles. Using a custom-written real-time feedback program, participants adjusted their ankles to an instructed PF angle and dropped onto two force platforms. For increasing PF, peak ground reaction force and peak loading rate during w

Three-dimensional assessment of squats and drop jumps using the Microsoft Xbox One Kinect: Reliability and validity.

The Microsoft Xbox One Kinect™ (Kinect V2) contains a depth camera that can be used to manually identify anatomical landmark positions in three-dimensions independent of the standard skeletal tracking, and therefore has potential for low-cost, time-efficient three-dimensional movement analysis (3DMA). This study examined inter-session reliability and concurrent validity of the Kinect V2 for the assessment of coronal and sagittal plane kinematics for the trunk, hip and knee during single leg squats (SLS) and drop vertical jumps (DVJ). Thirty young, healthy participants (age = 23 ± 5yrs, male/fe

Sex differences in unilateral landing mechanics from absolute and relative heights.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in athletic populations and the sex disparity in injury rates are well documented. It is also recognized that landing from a jump is a common noncontact injury mechanism. Yet, most studies utilize absolute landing heights, and few have utilized landing heights equal to participants' maximal jumping ability. The purpose of this study was to examine unilateral landing mechanics from relative and absolute heights. METHODS: Twenty-one female and twenty male participants completed a series of landings from absolute heights of 30, 40

Effects of 12 weeks of complex training on lower limbs strength and power in collegiate dancers.

BACKGROUND: Complex training (CT), which combines resistance and plyometric exercises within a single session, is widely used to improve strength and explosive performance. However, no study has examined its effectiveness among collegiate dancers, who require both strength and dynamic control for performance. This study aimed to compare the effects of 12 weeks of CT versus traditional resistance training (RT) on lower-limb strength and power in collegiate dancers. METHODS: Thirty-six collegiate dancers were randomly assigned to either a CT group (n = 18) or an RT group (n = 18). Both groups t

Effects of high-intensity interval cross training and classical training on physical and sprint performance in male junior sprinters.

High-Intensity Interval Cross Training (HIICT) combines sprinting, plyometric, and functional strength exercises, but its effects compared with classical sprint training in male junior sprinters remain unclear. This study examined the effects of HIICT and Classical Training (CT) on physical and sprint performance in male junior sprinters. Sixty-four male junior sprinters were randomly assigned to an HIICT group or a CT group for an 8-week intervention. Both groups completed similar overall internal training loads. Assessments before and after the intervention included sprint performance, jump

Age-Dependent Patellofemoral Pain: Hip and Knee Risk Landing Profiles in Prepubescent and Postpubescent Female Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Female athletes are at an increased risk of developing patellofemoral pain (PFP) relative to male athletes. The unique effects of maturation may compound that risk. Hypothesis/Purpose: The purpose was to evaluate the neuromuscular control mechanisms that are adaptive to pubertal maturation and determine their relative contribution to PFP development. It was hypothesized that aberrant landing mechanics (reduced sagittal-plane and increased frontal- and transverse-plane kinematics and kinetics) would be associated with an increased risk for PFP. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of

Effects of a combined inversion and plantarflexion surface on knee and hip kinematics during landing.

Although landing in a plantarflexion and inversion position is a well-known characteristic of lateral ankle sprains, the associated kinematics of the knee and hip is largely unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the changes in knee and hip kinematics during landings on an altered landing surface of combined plantarflexion and inversion. Participants performed five drop landings from 30 cm onto a trapdoor platform in three different conditions: flat landing surface, 25° inversion, or a combined 25° plantarflexion and 25° inversion. Kinematic data were collected using a se

Minimum effective plyometric training volume in sedentary individuals: Impact on lower limb viscoelastic properties and functional performance in a randomised controlled trial.

Sedentary lifestyles reduce muscle mass, strength, power, and alter viscoelastic properties. Plyometric jump training (PJT) shows promise in countering these effects, but the optimal training volume for individuals with low athletic performance remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the minimal PJT volume required to improve muscle and tendon viscoelastic properties, strength, and power in sedentary individuals. A double-blind randomised controlled trial included 44 participants divided into three groups: Control Group (CG) (n = 16), Reduced Volume Training Group (RVTG) (n = 16), and T

An Acute Bout of Whole-Body Vibration Does Not Improve Jumping Performance in Those With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

CONTEXT: Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often fail to return to their previous level of sport performance. Although multifaceted, this inability to regain preinjury performance may be influenced by impaired plyometric ability attributable to chronic quadriceps dysfunction. Whole-body vibration (WBV) acutely improves quadriceps function and biomechanics after ACLR, but its effects on jumping performance outcomes such as jump height, the reactive strength index (RSI), and knee work and power are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute effects of WBV on measu
