Exposure to polystyrene microplastics exacerbates hippocampal inflammation and ferroptosis in mice following chronic sleep deprivation.

Chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) is closely associated with impairments in learning and memory, neuroinflammation, and ferroptosis, potentially increasing vulnerability to harmful environmental exposures. Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) can induce oxidative stress and inflammation, yet their impact on hippocampal pathology and cognition under CSD remains unclear. Here, we established a mouse model combining oral PS-MPs exposure with CSD and assessed cognition using the novel object recognition (NOR) test, open-field test (OFT), Y-maze, and nest-building. CSD markedly promoted PS-MPs depositi

Deep eutectic solvent assisted oil - water interfacial behavior on polystyrene surfaces: a computational study.

Oil-water separation on hydrophobic polymer surfaces, such as polystyrene (PS), faces significant challenges due to poor interfacial control and low wettability. This study computationally explores the efficacy of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) as environmentally friendly additives to modify interfacial behavior and enhance compatibility between oil, water, and the polymer surface. Utilizing classical all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigated the molecular-level interactions and structural organization at the oil-water-DES-PS interface. Our molecular structural analysis revea

Gut microbiota participates in polystyrene microplastics-induced defective implantation through impairing uterine receptivity.

Microplastics (MPs) are widespread in global ecosystems and could pose risks to human health. However, crucial information on the impact of MP exposure on female reproductive health remains insufficient. In this study, we constructed an MP-exposure mice model through oral administration of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and found that it resulted in impaired uterine receptivity and defective implantation. An accumulation of plastic particles was detected in MP mice intestines. Metagenomic sequencing of feces samples indicated a structural and functional alteration of gut microbiota. Alisti

Effects of photoaged polystyrene microplastics and nanoplastics on the extracellular aggregation and intracellular accumulation of ZnO nanoparticles to algae.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) can alter the behavior of co-existing pollutants in aquatic environments through their interactions. However, limited information was available on how the interactions between photoaged MPs/NPs and nanoparticles affect the extracellular aggregation and intracellular accumulation of nanoparticles and their associated ecological risk. Here, we investigated the effects of interactions between photoaged polystyrene MPs and NPs (aged PS MPs/NPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) on the green alga Chlorella vulgaris. Results proved that the adsorption

Hepatic cyp24a1 serves as a biomarker for diagnosing polystyrene microplastic exposure in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Microplastics (MPs), particularly polystyrene (PS), pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems globally. Sensitive biomarkers for diagnosing PS exposure are critical for environmental monitoring, yet evolutionarily conserved diagnostic markers in fish remain poorly characterized. This study identified cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily members as potential biomarkers for PS exposure in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), a globally farmed species and established toxicological model. We comprehensively characterized 88 CYP genes using whole-genome and multi-tissue transcriptomic analyses.

Toxicity and absorption of polystyrene micro-nanoplastics in healthy and Crohn's disease human duodenum-chip models.

Micro and nanoplastics (MNPs) are widespread environmental and food web contaminants that are absorbed by the intestine and distributed systemically, but the mechanisms of uptake are not well understood. In a triculture small intestinal epithelial model, we previously found that uptake of 26 nm polystyrene MNPs (PS26) occurred by both passive diffusion and active actin- and dynamin-dependent mechanisms. However, studies in a more physiologically relevant model are required to validate those results. Here, a microfluidic intestine-on-a-chip model was developed using primary human intestinal epi

Pulmonary hazards of nanoplastic particles: a study using polystyrene in in vitro models of the alveolar and bronchial epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Nanoplastics (NPs) are released into the environment through the degradation of plastic objects, leading to human exposure. Due to their small size, concerns have been raised about the potential hazards to the respiratory tract, as ultrafine and nanoparticles are known to penetrate till the alveolar regions of the lungs, potentially impairing their functions. Thus, in the present study, we used model polystyrene nanoparticles doped with the fluorescent metal europium (PS-Eu) to enhance the understanding of NPs hazard and investigate adverse outcomes associated with exposure in huma

Functionalized Polystyrene Sensor for Selective Extraction and Assay of Plutonium at Ultratrace Level in Complex Radionuclide Matrices.

The present study focuses on the development of a scintillation sensor specifically designed for the selective extraction and ultratrace detection of Pu in the presence of other α and β-γ emitting radionuclides. To achieve this, a polystyrene (PS) film, embedded with the fluorophore 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and the activator 1,4-bis(2-methylstyryl)benzene (MSB), has been prepared as the substrate owing to its excellent pulse height response. The Pu selective functional groups have been introduced onto the PS substrate by surface grafting of bis(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl) phosphate (BMEP) monom

Application of Computational Studies Using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to Evaluate the Catalytic Degradation of Polystyrene.

The degradation of polystyrene (PS) represents a significant challenge in plastic waste management due to its chemical stability and low biodegradability. In this study, the catalytic degradation mechanisms of PS were investigated by density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations using the hybrid functional B3LYP and the 6-311G++(d,p) basis in Gaussian 16. The influence of acidic (AlCl3, Fe2(SO4)3) and basic (CaO) catalysts was evaluated in terms of activation energy, reaction mechanisms, and degradation products. The results revealed that acid catalysts induce PS fragmentation through the

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on the female reproductive system in mice: Implications for ovarian function and follicular development.

INTRODUCTION: Plastic pollution has led to widespread accumulation of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), increasing human exposure via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. While MPs have been linked to endocrine and reproductive toxicity, studies on NPs, especially their effects on female reproductive health, remain limited. Given their smaller size and greater bioavailability, NPs may cross biological barriers and accumulate in reproductive tissues. This study examines the effects of oral polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on estrous cyclicity, follicle development, atresia, cor

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce cognitive dysfunction and dendritic spine deterioration via excessive mitochondrial fission.

Our research addresses the critical issue of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) exposure and their neurotoxic effects, highlighting a significant environmental health concern. We proved that PS-NPs could breach the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and accumulate in murine brains, emphasizing the need for further investigation into their impact on human health. Using both in vivo models with Thy1-GFP-M transgenic mice and in vitro models with primary hippocampal neurons, we explored the effects of PS-NPs on cognitive function and neuroplasticity. Our results revealed that PS-NPs lead to cognitive impai

Adsorption of modified polystyrene nanoplastics on biomass-derived activated carbons: A study of ball mill activation.

This study focuses on synthesizing activated carbons using lignin and sawdust as precursors, with FeCl3 employed as an activating agent, aimed at adsorbing of modified polystyrene nanoparticles. The impact of ball milling during the impregnation process was evaluated, revealing that the best results were obtained with a milling time of 10 min. This method resulted in activated carbons with enhanced porosity compared to those synthesized without milling. However, extending the milling time adversely affected the performance, likely due to heat generated by friction in the ball mill, which cause

Polystyrene nanoplastics cause developmental abnormalities, oxidative damage and immune toxicity in early zebrafish development.

Aquatic organisms are increasingly affected by polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs), which have the potential to disrupt development, induce oxidative stress, and impair immune function. This study examined the effects of PSNPs on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos exposed to 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 μg/mL from 2 to 120 h post-fertilization (hpf). The findings indicated that developmental abnormalities occurred in a dose-dependent manner, including delayed hatching, decreased survival rates, reduced body length, smaller eye diameter, and enlarged yolk sac area. PSNPs accumulated in the chorion and yolk s

The inhalation effects of airborne nanoplastics (NPs) on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are rarely investigated, with most studies focusing only on the lungs and other organs. This study examined the changes in the key constipation phenotypes, mucin secretion, water and ion balance, and enteric nervous system (ENS) function in ICR mice after inhalation of polystyrene (PS)-NPs with 500 nm size for two weeks to determine if inhaled NPs can cause constipation. Significant constipation phenotypes, including the weight, water contents and morphology of stools, GI motility, intestinal length, histo

Electric field-assisted annular arrangement of sulfonated polystyrene particles for isotropically enhanced matrix performance.

An ordered and rationally designed distribution structure can fully exploit the superior properties of micro/nano-fillers, maximizing the synergistic effects between the fillers and the matrix. However, current research primarily focuses on the linear alignment of fillers, which only enhances the composite's performance along a specific direction. In this study, sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) particles were arranged in an annular pattern induced by an electric field. Similar to the role of aggregates in concrete, the oriented SPS particles acted as rigid support points, constructing "micro-bridg

Interface-Engineered Polystyrene-Divinylbenzene Microspheres with Polyethylenimine and Metal-Phenolic Networks for Multifunctional Sepsis Hemoperfusion.

Sepsis, a life-threatening organ dysfunction from a dysregulated infection response, causes many deaths, especially in the elderly. Aging population exacerbates the sepsis burden, requiring cost-effective prevention, detection, and treatment strategies. Hemoperfusion has emerged as an effective clinical treatment for sepsis. Herein, polystyrene-divinylbenzene microspheres functionalized with metal-phenolic networks and polyethylenimine (P-PEI Cu/TAn microspheres) with endotoxin and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) adsorption, oxidative stress relief and antibacterial activity were constructed as a multif

Comparing the effects and mechanisms of exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics with different functional groups on the male reproductive system.

After aging in the environment, some nanoplastics will carry different charges and functional groups, thereby altering their toxicological effects. To evaluate the potential impact of aging of nanoplastics on the mammalian reproductive system, we exposed C57BL/6 male mice to a dose of 5 mg/kg/d polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) with different functional groups (unmodified, carboxyl functionalized and amino functionalized) for 45 days for this study. The results suggest that PS-NPs with different functional groups triggered oxidative stress, a decreased in the testis index, disruption of the o

Oral exposure to high concentrations of polystyrene microplastics alters the intestinal environment and metabolic outcomes in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Oral exposure to microplastics (MPs) is a global health concern. In our previous study, MPs induced glucose intolerance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) under a high-fat diet-induced leaky gut syndrome (LGS). This study aims to evaluate the effects of high concentrations of MP on lipid metabolism under normal dietary conditions and to assess the changes in the intestinal tract resulting from MP exposure. METHODS: C57BL6/J mice were fed a normal diet (ND) without polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) or with PS-MPs (1000 µg/L or 5000 µg/L) for six weeks. Subsequently, intestinal

Female zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics induces reproductive toxicity in mother and their offspring.

Nanoplastics (NPs) have been commonly detected in aquatic ecosystems, and their negative effects on aquatic organisms have raised concerns in the scientific community and general public. The acute toxicity, neurotoxicity, and metabolic toxicity induced by NPs on fishes have been reported by many studies, although less attention has been focused on how mother exposed to NPs affected their offspring in aquatic organisms. Here, female zebrafish (F0) were exposed to 0, 200 and 2000 μg/L polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) for 42 d, with their offspring (F1) reared in clear water until sexual maturit

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce vascular stenosis via regulation of the PIWI-interacting RNA expression profile.

Nanoplastics (NPs) have become common worldwide and attracted increasing attention due to their serious toxic effects. Owing to their higher surface area and volume ratios and ability to easily enter tissues, NPs impose more serious toxic effects than microplastics. However, the effect of NP exposure on vascular stenosis remains unclear. To measure the effects of polystyrene NP (PS-NP) exposure on vascular toxicity, we conducted analyses of blood biochemical parameters, pathological histology, high-throughput sequencing, and bioinformatics. Red fluorescent PS-NPs (100 nm) were effectively upta
