Clinical and endoscopic predictors of gastric precancerous conditions: a large population case control study.

BACKGROUND: Atrophic gastritis (AG) and gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) are well defined intermediate precancerous conditions (PCCs) in the gastric cancer cascade. The diagnosis of PCCs may be suspected based on endoscopic findings but is established by histology. Estimates of the global prevalence of PCCs vary widely but simple clinical or endoscopic predictors of their diagnosis are ill defined. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of gastric PCCs in our practice and to identify predictors for its diagnosis. METHODS: We analyzed electronic reports of patients referred for gastroscopy pro

Problem gambling and anxiety disorders in the general swedish population - a case control study.

Co-occurring psychiatric comorbidity is high among problem gamblers, and anxiety disorders has repeatedly been linked to problem gambling. Less conclusive, however, is the association between problem gambling and specific anxiety disorders. The aim of this study is to examine the association between problem gambling and specific anxiety disorders in subgroups of gender, age and socio-economic status (SES) in the general Swedish population. A case-control design was employed - nested in the Swedish longitudinal gambling study cohort. All anxiety disorders studied - Panic Disorder, Social Phobia

Maternal Sepsis in Italy: A Prospective, Population-Based Cohort and Nested Case-Control Study.

Maternal sepsis represents a leading cause of mortality and severe morbidity worldwide. In Italy, it is the second cause of direct maternal mortality. Delay in recognition and treatment initiation are the drivers of sepsis-associated adverse outcomes. Between November 2017 and October 2019, the Italian Obstetric Surveillance System coordinated a prospective population-based study on maternal sepsis occurring before or after childbirth from 22 weeks' gestation onward and up to 42 days following the end of pregnancy. A nested 1:2 matched case-control study on postpartum sepsis was also performed

Maternal PM10 Exposure Increases Risk for Spina Bifida: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

Limited studies have focused on the impact of ambient air pollution on spina bifida. A population-based case-control study was conducted in Liaoning Province, China to assess the associations between maternal PM10 exposures in various exposure windows and spina bifida risk. Data on spina bifida cases born between 2010 and 2015 were available from the Maternal and Child Health Certificate Registry of Liaoning Province. Controls were a random sample of healthy livebirths without any birth defects delivered in the selected five cities during 2010-2015. Ambient air monitoring data for PM10 were ob

Age-related macular degeneration and premorbid allergic diseases: a population-based case-control study.

Evidence indicates that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is associated with the prior presence of allergic diseases; however, large-scale studies in the literature are limited. A case-control study was conducted to describe the relationship between premorbid allergic diseases and AMD using Taiwan's National Health Insurance database. Eligibility criteria for inclusion of new adult AMD cases from 2000 to 2013 were set up. We defined the year of diagnosis as the index year. Age-, gender-, index year- matched controls who were drawn from the same database. The case control ratio was 1:4. Fo

Glycemic Control Among People With Diabetes in Ontario: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Our aim in this study was to determine the distribution of glycated hemoglobin (A1C) in the Ontario diabetes population and identify subgroups with a high risk of poor glycemic control. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used real-world clinical data linked with health-care administrative data to identify all people with prevalent diabetes on December 31, 2019. We then identified their most recent A1C result during the year. The distribution of A1C was assessed, and the proportion of those with an A1C of >8.0% was determined, stratified by various sociodemographic and clin

Association between inflammatory bowel disease and bullous pemphigoid: a population-based case-control study.

The coexistence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and bullous pemphigoid (BP) has been reported. No large-scale study to date has explored the relationship between these diseases. This population-based case-control study examined the association between IBD and BP by using a nationwide database. A total of 5,263 BP patients and 21,052 age- and gender-, hospital visit number-matched controls were identified in the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan (1997-2013). Demographic characteristics and comorbidities including IBD were compared. Logistic regression was conducted to ex

Oxycodone, Hydromorphone, and the Risk of Suicide: A Retrospective Population-Based Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Opioids have been increasingly associated with suicide, but whether they are independent contributors is unclear. Oxycodone and hydromorphone are commonly prescribed high-potency opioids that can differentially affect mood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore whether oxycodone and hydromorphone are differentially associated with suicide. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based case-control study in Ontario, Canada, from 1992 to 2014. Using coronial data, we defined case subjects as individuals who died by suicide involving an opioid overdose. Ea

Extended spectrum penicillins reduce the risk of omphalocele: A population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Omphalocele is a major congenital anomaly associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Regardless, the influence of maternal use of prescription drugs on the risk of omphalocele has only been addressed in a handful of studies. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of maternal risk factors and prescription drugs in early pregnancy on the risk of omphalocele. METHODS: We performed a nationwide register-based case-control study in Finland. The analysis is based on the Finnish Register of Congenital Malformations and Drugs and Pregnancy databases, both upheld by th

Obstructive sleep apnea and the risk of gout: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) might be at risk of gout because of pathophysiological mechanisms that can lead to hyperuricemia and eventually gout or because of shared risk factors between both diseases. The objective of the present study was to investigate the risk of gout in patients with OSA. METHODS: A population-based case-control study using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD including all patients aged 40 years and older with a first diagnosis of gout between 1987 and 2014. Gout cases were matched by year of birth, sex, and practice to non-gout co

A case-control study of risk factors for colorectal cancer in an African population.

The interplay between hereditary and environmental factors in the causation of colorectal cancer in sub-Saharan Africa is poorly understood. We carried out a community based case-control study to identify the risk factors associated with colorectal cancer in Zimbabwe. We recruited 101 cases of colorectal cancer and 202 controls, matched for age, sex and domicile. Potential risk factors including family history, socioeconomic status, urbanization, diabetes mellitus and previous schistosomiasis were evaluated. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios associated with t

Modeling the impact of sterile males on an Aedes aegypti population with optimal control.

We use partial differential equations to describe the dynamics of an Aedes aegypti mosquito population on an island, and the effects of a sterile male release. The model includes mosquito movement and an Allee effect to capture extinction events. We apply optimal control theory to identify the release strategy that eliminates the mosquitoes most rapidly, conditional on a limited availability of sterile males. The optimal solution for a single location is to initially release a substantial number of mosquitoes and to subsequently release fewer sterile males proportionally to the decreasing fema
