COVID-19 response needs to broaden financial inclusion to curb the rise in poverty.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic risks wiping out years of progress made in reducing global poverty. In this paper, we explore to what extent financial inclusion could help mitigate the increase in poverty using cross-country data across 79 low- and lower-middle-income countries. Unlike other recent cross-country studies, we show that financial inclusion, particularly financial outreach, is a key driver of poverty reduction in these countries. This effect is not direct, but indirect, by mitigating the detrimental effect that inequality has on poverty. Our findings are consistent across all the di

The association between child maltreatment and adult poverty - A systematic review of longitudinal research.

Child maltreatment is a global problem affecting millions of children and is associated with an array of cumulative negative outcomes later in life, including unemployment and financial difficulties. Although establishing child maltreatment as a causal mechanism for adult economic outcomes is fraught with difficulty, understanding the relationship between the two is essential to reducing such inequality. This paper presents findings from a systematic review of longitudinal research examining experiences of child maltreatment and economic outcomes in adulthood. A systematic search of seven data

Trajectories of Psychological Distress in Australians Living in Urban Poverty: The Impact of Interpersonal Trauma.

Childhood maltreatment and interpersonal trauma experience is an important factor underpinning the apparent perpetuation of the cycle of social disadvantage experienced by homeless adults. This paper aimed to examine longitudinal patterns of psychological distress in a sample of 1,504 socially disadvantaged adult participants from the Journeys Home Study in Australia. The current paper utilized the "conservation of resources" theory and the concept of "risk factor caravans" to investigate the nature and implications of childhood trauma in the context of homelessness. The influence of poverty and rabies knowledge on healthcare seeking behaviors and dog ownership, Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal encephalitis caused by lyssaviruses, with most human cases worldwide resulting from rabid dog bites. Although effective animal and human vaccines have been available for over 100 years, control efforts have not been adequately implemented on the global scale and rabies remains one of the greatest global zoonotic threats to human health. We conducted a knowledge, attitudes and practices survey in Northern Cameroon to describe dog ownership characteristics, rates of dog bites, and post-bite healthcare seeking behaviors. METHODS: The survey was performed in four rur

Money and Mental Illness: A Study of the Relationship Between Poverty and Serious Psychological Problems.

UNLABELLED: Several studies have indicated a co-occurrence between mental problems, a bad economy, and social isolation. Medical treatments focus on reducing the extent of psychiatric problems. Recent research, however, has highlighted the possible effects of social initiatives. The aim of this study was to examine the relation between severe mental illness, economic status, and social relations. METHOD: a financial contribution per month was granted to 100 individuals with severe mental illnesses for a 9-month period. Assessments of the subjects were made before the start of the intervention

Poverty and Blindness in Nigeria: Results from the National Survey of Blindness and Visual Impairment.

PURPOSE: Poverty can be a cause and consequence of blindness. Some causes only affect the poorest communities (e.g. trachoma), and poor individuals are less likely to access services. In low income countries, cataract blind adults have been shown to be less economically active, indicating that blindness can exacerbate poverty. This study aims to explore associations between poverty and blindness using national survey data from Nigeria. METHODS: Participants ≥40 years were examined in 305 clusters (2005-2007). Sociodemographic information, including literacy and occupation, was obtained by int

The influence of childhood sexual abuse on adolescent outcomes: the roles of gender, poverty, and revictimization.

Research on child sexual abuse has focused on adult revictimization and outcomes. This article examines the rate of child maltreatment revictimization among male and female children reported to child protective services for child sexual abuse and whether revictimization impacts outcomes. Using longitudinal administrative data, Cox regressions were used to examine relationships between initial report of child sexual abuse, maltreatment revictimization, and adolescent outcomes among children from poor and nonpoor families. Despite no significant differences in child sexual abuse rates between po

Freedom poverty: a new tool to identify the multiple disadvantages affecting those with CVD.

BACKGROUND: It is recognised that CVD affects an individual's financial situation, placing them in income poverty. However, recent developments in poverty measurement practice recognises other forms of disadvantage other than low income, such as poor health and insufficient education also affect living standards. METHODS: Using the Freedom Poverty Measure, the multiple forms of disadvantage experienced by those with no health condition, heart disease, other diseases of the circulatory system, and all other health conditions was assessed using data on the adult Australian population contained

Trachoma and poverty: unnecessary blindness further disadvantages the poorest people in the poorest countries.

Trachoma is the leading cause of infectious blindness worldwide. Many populations living in poverty are affected by trachoma. The infectious organism is provided with an ideal milieu for transmission, where markers of poverty are present. These include overcrowding, lack of adequate water resources, limited use of water for personal hygiene, inadequate waste disposal and other conditions that encourage the proliferation of flies. This review summarises treatment strategies that have been effectively instituted in many countries to reduce the prevalence of trachoma. The review promotes partners

Expanded Medicaid coverage for pregnant women to 100 percent of the federal poverty level.

Our objective was (1) to identify the subgroup of women most affected by the regulatory change expanding Tennessee Medicaid eligibility for pregnant women from 45% of the federal poverty level to 100% and (2) to examine whether increased enrollment correlated with greater use of prenatal care and improved reproductive outcomes. We linked Tennessee birth and fetal death certificates to Medicaid enrollment files. We compare outcome rates in the 12-month period before the change in the Medicaid regulations with similar rates for the 10-month period after the change had been in effect nine months.

Relationship between the degree of poverty and the IgE response to Ascaris infection in slum children.

We examined a group of urban slum children in Caracas, Venezuela, and demonstrated the relationship that exists between poverty, conditions of hygiene and the prevalence of helminth infection. Concordant with the high prevalence of helminth infection in these children, the total serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) and blood eosinophilia were elevated and were directly related to the degree of poverty and lack of sanitary facilities. However, in contrast, the reverse pattern was observed for the specific allergic response to these parasites. Thus, the immediate hypersensitivity skin test rea

Parental investment across neighborhood contexts: Evidence from a randomized controlled trial of poverty reduction.

This study investigated how low-income parents with infants and toddlers make differing caregiving investments depending on neighborhood conditions. It leverages a randomized controlled trial in which 1,000 low-income mothers and newborns (Mage = 27; 42% Black; 41% Hispanic; 10% White; 2018-2022) received unconditional cash transfers of $333 or $20 per month. Mothers' addresses were linked with census tract-based measures of "opportunity" for economic mobility. Parents in -lower-opportunity neighborhoods who received larger cash transfers engaged their child in more enriching activities and pu

Does Poverty Explain All? A Path Analysis of Single Mothers' Dietary Behaviors in Japan.

Background/Objectives: In Japan, single mothers face a high risk of poverty and poorer dietary quality than partnered mothers; however, the pathways underlying these disparities remain unclear. This study examined whether economic status mediates the association between family structure and maternal dietary behaviors and whether intergenerational co-residence modifies these pathways. Methods: Using nationally representative repeated cross-sectional survey data from 2018 to 2022 (N = 1319 mothers), we conducted path analysis of dietary awareness and behaviors. Family structure was classified as
