Bridging perspectives on antimicrobial resistance: a survey of Belgian general practitioners, dentists, and infectious disease specialists.

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotics revolutionized medicine, but their overuse has led to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a major global public health threat. Globally, ambulatory antibiotic consumption remains high despite ongoing antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. This study explored the perceptions and approaches of Belgian general practitioners (GPs), dentists, and infectious disease (ID) specialists toward AMR and antibiotic prescribing, with the aim of identifying challenges and opportunities relevant to broader stewardship efforts. METHODS: A self-designed questionnaire was distributed via e

Current Perspectives on Management Approaches for Molar Incisor Hypomineralization: Preliminary findings from the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network.

PURPOSE: To assess approaches used by National Dental Practice-Based Research Network dentists when they encounter newly erupted molars with molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH). METHODS: A brief questionnaire ("Quick Poll") was administered to explore three early management areas of molars affected with MIH: (1) regularity of informing parents about these enamel defect; (2) frequency of using silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to treat MIH on molars, and (3) identifying which approaches dentists use when these molars present at a non-carious early stage of enamel breakdown. RESULTS: Three-four

Salivary detection of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) and implications for oral health-care providers.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become a major public health crisis. The diagnostic and containment efforts for the disease have presented significant challenges for the global health-care community. In this brief report, we provide perspective on the potential use of salivary specimens for detection and serial monitoring of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), based on current literature. Oral health-care providers are at an elevated risk of exposure to COVID-19 due to their proximity to nasopharynx of patients, and the practice involving the use

Attitudes and behaviour regarding deep dentin caries removal: a survey among German dentists.

Incomplete removal of deep caries has been shown to reduce the risks of pulp exposure and postoperative pulpal complications. It is therefore of interest whether dentists perform one- or two-step incomplete excavation, and which criteria and methods they use to assess and provide removal of deep caries. This study investigated the attitudes and behaviour of dentists in northern Germany using a new, validated questionnaire. The survey included 2,346 practitioners, 821 (35%) of whom responded. Demographic and sensitivity analysis did not indicate selection bias. 50% of dentists considered only c

Perspectives of US pediatric dentistry faculty on the clinical management of molar hypomineralization.

BACKGROUND: Molar hypomineralization (MH) is a qualitative enamel defect. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, inconsistencies in MH diagnosis and management exist among dental care professionals. The authors assessed the knowledge, diagnostic accuracy, and treatment preferences of US pediatric dentistry (PD) faculty members regarding MH, with a focus on clinical decision making consistency. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to PD faculty members across the United States from April 1 through July 31, 2024. The survey assessed faculty members' knowledge of MH termi

Validity of three screening questions (3Q/TMD) in relation to the DC/TMD.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common but seem to be largely undetected within general dental care. To improve dentists' awareness of these symptoms, three screening questions (3Q/TMD) have been introduced. Our aim was to validate 3Q/TMD in relation to the diagnostic criteria for TMD (DC/TMD), while taking into account the severity level of the symptoms. The study population consisted of 7831 individuals 20-69 years old, who had their routine dental check-up at the Public Dental Health Service in Västerbotten, Sweden. All patients answered a health declaration, including the 3Q/TMD rega

Management of pulps exposed during carious tissue removal in adults: a multi-national questionnaire-based survey.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the management of pulps exposed during carious tissue removal by French, German, and Norwegian general dental practitioners (GDPs). We further aimed to assess possible dentist- and patient-related factors associated with these management decisions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured questionnaire was send via mail to a simple random sample of dentists. RESULTS: The analyzed sample consisted of 661 (33%) French GDPs, 622 (25%) German GDPs, and 199 (34%) Norwegian GDPs. No single management method gained uniform consensus

Current practice of distraction osteogenesis for craniofacial anomalies in Europe: a web based survey.

Aim of the study was to get more insight into the opinion of European surgeons and orthodontists on the use of distraction osteogenesis (DO) for patients with different diagnoses and treatment protocols. A web based survey was set up, showing records of four patients with different conditions: hemifacial microsomia (case 1), bilateral mandibular deficiency (case 2), cleft lip and palate (case 3) and Crouzon syndrome (case 4). Respondents from 181 Eurocleft centres were asked to fill out a questionnaire for each patient. Most of the respondents considered case 1 (80%), case 3 (81%) and case 4 (

Mandibular third molar removal: patient preferences, assessments of oral surgeons and patient flows.

UNLABELLED: Mandibular third molar removal is one of the most common treatments conducted at oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics in Sweden. During the 1980's and 1990's, 20-25,000 mandibular third molars were removed annually which represents about 60% of the total operation volume. Removals performed in private specialist clinics and general dental clinics are not included in these figures. The aims of the present studies on mandibular third molars were to: 1) study values that reflect patients' preferences about possible outcomes of removal and non-removal; 2) make comparisons between Swe

Mandibular third molars: oral surgeons' assessment of the indications for removal.

The aim was to examine oral surgeons' assessment of the indications for removal of mandibular third molars. Questionnaires were distributed to seven oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics. The oral surgeons were asked to record whether or not there was associated disease. Three other factors were recorded: patient's age, and angular position and extent of eruption of the molars. The strength of the indication for removal was rated on a visual analogue scale (VAS) where 0= weakest and 100= strongest indication for removal. The results were based on data from 666 molars: 118 (18%) had no disease
