The Journal of adolescent health : official publication of the Society for Adolescent Medicine2018eng
PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that young adults experiencing homelessness (YEH) are at elevated risk of HIV compared to housed youth. Given the limited research on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness among YEH, this study examined their PrEP knowledge and attitudes.
METHODS: Data from a cross-sectional survey among YEH (ages 18-26) (n = 1,427) in seven U.S. cities were used to assess their knowledge and attitudes regarding PrEP to inform HIV prevention efforts.
RESULTS: Participants were primarily male youth of color. The mean age was 20.9years. While 66% felt at risk for HIV, only 14% st

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in a clinical trial of a population of men who have sex with men (MSM), to explore the influence of social psychology and objective factors (e.g., forgetting, too busy) on adherence, and to provide evidence for subsequent PrEP research.
METHODS: This study analyzed the data from the daily medication group within a PrEP study (a randomized placebo-controlled trial of oral tenofovir among MSM in Western China from April 2013 to March 2015). A total of 331 participants were analyzed. PrEP adherence was self-reported by the subje

INTRODUCTION: PrEP awareness and uptake among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TG) in Thailand remains low. Finding ways to increase HIV testing and PrEP uptake among high-risk groups is a critical priority. This study evaluates the effect of a novel Adam's Love Online-to-Offline (O2O) model on PrEP and HIV testing uptake among Thai MSM and TG and identifies factors associated with PrEP uptake.
METHODS: The O2O model was piloted by Adam's Love (www.adamslove.org) HIV educational and counselling website. MSM and TG reached online by PrEP promotions and interested in free

INTRODUCTION: Increasing rates of HIV infection remain of concern, especially for high-risk groups such as men who have sex with men. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis has emerged as an alternative to prevention. However, doubts persist in patients and physicians about its effectiveness.
METHODS: To answer this question we used Epistemonikos, the largest database of systematic reviews in health, which is maintained by screening multiple information sources, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, among others. We extracted data from the systematic reviews, reanalyzed data of primary studies, conduct

The Netherlands has approximately 20,000 registered HIV-infected patients. The current HIV prevention policy consisting of condom use and active HIV testing does not effectively mitigate the HIV epidemic in all risk groups. In July of 2012, tenofovir/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) was approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for long-term use in persons who exhibit frequent risky and unsafe sexual behaviour. With once-daily use and good therapy compliance, TDF/FTC has proved to be effective as PrEP, and few side effects are reported. Drawbacks in

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is among the most effective tools used for HIV prevention. Primary care providers (PCPs) play a crucial role in identifying people at risk and initiating care. There is a gap in research on PrEP use in the MENA region; this study aims to assess PCPs' knowledge, familiarity with PrEP and willingness to prescribe it. An online survey targeted PCPs and infectious disease (ID) specialists across the MENA region, with most responses coming from Lebanon. Data included demographics, practice characteristics, perceived knowledge, familiarity with PrEP, willingness to pr

HIV/AIDS still imposes a high epidemiological and societal burden. Together with antiretroviral therapy, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) represents a fundamental tool in the fight against HIV/AIDS. PrEP is considered effective and safe, even though it may affect organs like the kidney, bone, and liver, as shown by randomized clinical trials (RCTs). These side effects may be mediated by alterations of the gut microbiome. Whilst the impact of the human rectal and vaginal microbiome on HIV prevention has been highly investigated among women, less is known about its effect among men having sex wit

BACKGROUND: Concerns about the actual and perceived costs of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) continue to be a major barrier to uptake among gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the United States.
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 25 GBMSM who presented for routine health care at a STD clinic in the northeastern United States. The cohort included GBMSM who were or were not currently taking PrEP and represented varied health care coverage and financial resources. We used a structured coding scheme to analyze transcripts and identify themes relevant to cost

HIV infection is a major public health problem for women in the United States. Prevention of new HIV infections is essential to the goal of eliminating HIV in the United States. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective and safe HIV prevention method recommended for women at increased risk for HIV infection, including during pregnancy and lactation. The recommended PrEP regimen is a fixed-dose combination of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine administered as a single daily dose. The initial evaluation for individuals desiring PrEP for HIV prevention includes obtaining a hist

BACKGROUND: Daily oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) is effective for reducing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition among cisgender women. We report results from the first US observational open-label demonstration project of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among at-risk cisgender women.
METHODS: Adherence Enhancement Guided by Individualized Texting and Drug Levels was a 48-week, single-arm, open-label demonstration study of daily oral TDF/FTC in cisgender women ≥18 years old at risk for HIV. Adherence was supported using 2-way text messaging and titrated adh

BACKGROUND: The number and characteristics of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) health care providers in the United States have not been reported.
METHODS: We analyzed a national pharmacy database that included >90% of all prescriptions dispensed by retail pharmacies and 60%-86% dispensed by mail-order outlets. We estimated the number of PrEP providers by year, provider type, physician specialty, and geographic location. We also measured the Gini coefficients for the distribution of PrEP patients among providers.
RESULTS: The number of PrEP providers increased from 9621 in 2014 to 65,822 in 20

BACKGROUND: Many Asian countries have yet to scale up HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Crowdsourcing has a group of individuals solving a specific problem before sharing solutions with the public. This approach enhances community engagement and ownership of the solutions and can be used to generate culturally relevant solutions. We used crowdsourcing to seek innovative strategies to optimise PrEP access by increasing the uptake and effective use of PrEP. This study describes the experiences of crowdsourcing open calls in Australia, the Philippines, Thailand and China.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily regimen that reduces the risk of acquiring HIV by up to 97%. There is limited information on the use of telehealth to provide PrEP in a program aimed toward the primary prevention of HIV. This was a 6-month telePrEP feasibility study that assessed process measures, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square analysis were used to evaluate measures and outcomes from the start to the end of the study. Twenty patients enrolled, and 80% completed the study. Participants were cisgender males (100%) with an average age

This paper addresses the role emotions play in the social assemblage of medicines and technical processes in the response to the HIV called pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV. We describe a series of stages and processes in the social construction of PrEP in Brazil from the run-up to the launch of the initiative by the Ministry of Health to the subsequent implementation of the strategy by public health services. To understand the meanings and symbolism assigned to this biomedical technology, we examined the hopes underpinning scientific, government and non-governmental narratives, clinica

BACKGROUND: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate has been recommended for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection. Several studies have shown short but potent intermittent PrEP could provide comparable protection to daily PrEP in men, suggesting such dosing strategy might be useful in Chinese as well. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of different dosing strategies on plasma concentrations of tenofovir.
METHODS: An open label study in 40 Chinese healthy volunteers, randomized to receive the WHO-recommended dose of tenofovir (300mg) at four different dosing inter

OBJECTIVES: To assess the cost-effectiveness of pharmacological pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) using a combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (FTC/TDF) with respect to HIV transmission in high-risk patients in the Czech Republic.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A pharmacoeconomic model was constructed to compare costs and outcomes in a cohort with and without PrEP. Initially, a decision tree is used to evaluate short-term benefits of PrEP (proportion of HIV-infected individuals), followed by Markov cycles to simulate the course of the disease based on CD4 lymphocyte counts. BACKGROUND: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was implemented in France in November 2015 based on individual-level risk factors for HIV infection. We evaluated the proportion of missed opportunities for PrEP among newly HIV-diagnosed people entering the Dat'AIDS cohort in 2016.
METHODS: Multicenter retrospective analysis in 15 French HIV clinical centers of patients with a new diagnosis of HIV infection. Among them we differentiated patients according to the estimated date of infection: those occurring in the PrEP area (a previous negative HIV test in the last 12 months or those with an inc

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a well-established biomedical HIV prevention strategy and recommended to reduce HIV risk during peri-conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Efforts are needed to translate global recommendations into national guidelines and implementation strategies. This article presents the current status of policy guidance for the use of PrEP during peri-conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding, with a particular focus on high prevalence countries, including those in sub-Saharan Africa. PrEP clinical guidelines released by ministries of health or other national-level heal
