Amoebic gel diffusion precipitin test has tried in comparison with fluorescent antibody test on sera from clinical amoebiasis cases and on 50 normal control sera. Ultimately the use of both tests is recommended as the latter resulted more specific while the positivity of the gel diffusion test appeared strictly correlated with acute infections.

A questionnaire survey of 1005 consecutive attenders at four outpatient clinics yielded 117 (12%) budgerigar fanciers (exposed to budgerigars- known in North America as parakeets-for at least three months) and 296 (29%) former fanciers. Twenty-four patients with urinary tract infections were treated with fosfomycin (FOM) to evaluate its effectiveness and safety. They all had shown allergic reactions, mainly to beta-lactams. Twenty-three patients with coeliac disease were studied whilst on a normal diet and again after a mean period of 15 months on a gluten-free diet. Serum levels of IgG, IgA and IgM, total haemolytic complement, C3, serum autoantibodies and precipitins to dietary proteins were compared to those in age and sex matched control subjects. Pigeon-breeder's lung should be included in the differential diagnosis when patients present with interstitial lung disease or intermittent cough and dyspnea. No single test confirms the diagnosis. Rather, careful attention must be given to results of history taking, physical examination, pulmonary function and precipitin testing, chest radiography, and, if indicated, lung biopsy. Symptoms usually resolve when exposure to suspected antigens is avoided.

Pigeon fancier's lung occurred in 3 children whose fathers kept pigeons. The clinical features included progressive breathlessness, cough, cynanosis, sweating, and inspiratory râles. Chest x-rays showed diffuse fine mottling. The serum gave positive precipitin tests to pigeon serum or droppings in each case. 2 cases were treated with steroids, but the importance of breaking the contact with pigeons is stressed.

Five patients with fascioliasis presented with malaise, pruritus, and pain in the right hypochondrium. Eosinophilia, increase in serum gamma globulin, and pyrexia were other features. Four patients treated with oral bithionol recovered completely and it is suggested that this is an effective form of therapy. A 53 year-old man had a three-year recurrent respiratory infection. No fungi was detected in sputum examinations. Immunodiffusion test with paracoccidiodin revealed two precipitin bands. Very small forms and hyphae of a fungus were seen on silver methenamine stained serial sections from lung's lesion. P. brasiliensis was identified on the basis of the rare multibudding small forms.

Humidifier lung is a rare phenotype of hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by inhalation of aerosolized antigens from contaminated humidifiers, and identification of the causative antigen is often challenging. Time course of cellular and humoral immune responses in mice infected with Fonsecaea pedrosoi was investigated by using an antigen prepared from culture filtrate of this fungus. Mice were infected by intravenous injection with yeast-like cells of the fungus. BACKGROUND: We have shown previously that the prevalence of allergic sensitization in Tyrolean farming students is high, with a clear relationship to occupational exposure.
OBJECTIVES: It was the aim of this investigation to assess longitudinal changes in sensitization and a possible impact on lung function.
