Patient "Catastrophizing" Associated with Expectations of Opioid Prescriptions for Acute Pain Control.

BACKGROUND: The prescription of opioids for acute pain may be a driving factor in chronic opioid abuse. We examined patients' characteristics associated with the expectation of the receipt of opioid prescriptions for acute pain control. METHODS: A 1-time survey was administered to adult patients at family medicine clinics in the Pacific Northwest between November 2018 and January 2019. Logistic regression modeled adjusted odds of expecting an opioid prescription in ≥ 3 of the 4 dispositional acute pain scenarios by patient demographics, opioid use, past-week pain intensity and duration, past-

Concomitant Filled Prescriptions of Oxymorphone or Oxycodone with CYP3A Inhibitors and Inducers.

BACKGROUND: Oxymorphone's metabolism does not involve the hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) system. The effect of this pharmacokinetic feature of oxymorphone on opioid prescribing is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relative frequency with which oxymorphone and oxycodone (a CYP3A-metabolized opioid analgesic) were each prescribed to patients concomitantly receiving CYP3A-modifying drugs (i.e., inducers and inhibitors) to characterize opioid-prescribing patterns in patients at risk for CYP3A-related drug interactions. METHODS: We analyzed the Sentinel Distributed Database from January 1, 2013, t

Evaluation of Antibiotic Prophylaxis and Discharge Prescriptions in the General Surgery Department.

Introduction Although there are international guidelines for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SP), the use of inappropriate SP is still a common problem. Most studies investigated SP applications in clean and clean-contaminated cases. However, antibiotics in the discharge prescriptions of these cases have not been adequately investigated. In this study, we aimed to examine the antibiotics in SP applications and discharged prescriptions together and to find out the causes of inappropriate use. Materials and methods We retrospectively evaluated the data of patients admitted to our general surger

[Strategies of interventing complications in hemodialysis with classical prescriptions from clinical cases].

There are 400 thousand patients with long-term hemodialysis in China nowadays. Hemodialysis, as the most common alternative to renal replacement therapy, prolongs the life span of patients with end stage renal failure. However, there are still many complications of hemodialysis treatment. These complications reduce the quality of life of patients and may even endanger their life, and sometimes they are difficult to deal with. Classical prescriptions, commonly referred to as classical effective prescriptions in modern medicine, mainly indicating the formulas recorded in Treatise on Febrile Dise

Opioid epidemic: lessons learned and updated recommendations for misuse involving prescription versus non-prescription opioids.

INTRODUCTION: In the past decades, the opioid crisis has heavily impacted parts of the US society and has been followed by an increase in the use of opioids worldwide. It is of paramount importance that we explore the origins of the US opioid epidemic to develop best practices to tackle the rising tide of opioid overdoses. AREAS COVERED: In this expert review, we discuss opioid (over)prescription, change in perception of pain, and false advertisement of opioid safety as the leading causes of the US opioid epidemic. Then, we review the evidence about opioid dependence and addiction potential a
