Single session cross-frequency bifocal tACS modulates visual motion network activity in young healthy population and stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Phase synchronization over long distances underlies inter-areal communication and importantly, modulates the flow of information processing to adjust to cognitive demands. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the impact of single-session, cross-frequency (Alpha-Gamma) bifocal transcranial alternating current stimulation (cf-tACS) to the cortical visual motion network on inter-areal coupling between the primary visual cortex (V1) and the medio-temporal area (MT) and on motion direction discrimination. METHODS: Based on the well-established phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) mechanism dr

The mixed serotonin receptor agonist psilocybin reduces threat-induced modulation of amygdala connectivity.

Stimulation of serotonergic neurotransmission by psilocybin has been shown to shift emotional biases away from negative towards positive stimuli. We have recently shown that reduced amygdala activity during threat processing might underlie psilocybin's effect on emotional processing. However, it is still not known whether psilocybin modulates bottom-up or top-down connectivity within the visual-limbic-prefrontal network underlying threat processing. We therefore analyzed our previous fMRI data using dynamic causal modeling and used Bayesian model selection to infer how psilocybin modulated eff

Altered functional connectivity in blepharospasm/orofacial dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Blepharospasm is characterized by involuntary eyelid spasms. It can be associated with perioral dystonia (Meige's syndrome or orofacial dystonia). We aimed at studying resting-state functional brain connectivity in these patients and its potential modulation by therapeutic botulinum toxin injections. METHODS: We performed resting-state functional MRI and a region of interest-based analysis of functional connectivity in 13 patients with blepharospasm/Meige's syndrome in comparison to 13 healthy controls. Patients were studied before and 4 weeks after botulinum toxin treatment. Si

Functional connectivity between somatosensory and visual cortex in early blind humans.

Crossmodal plasticity occurs when loss of input in one sensory modality leads to reorganization in brain representations of other sensory modalities. In congenital blindness the visual cortex becomes responsive to somatosensory input such as occurs during Braille reading. The route by which somatosensory information reaches the visual cortex is not known. Here, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to probe the connection between primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and early visual cortex (V1 and neighboring areas), combining rTMS with positron emission tomography (PET). We

Expanding the V1-MT model to the estimation of perceived fluid direction.

Humans can readily perceive the direction of liquid flow, yet computational modeling of this process remains challenging due to the complexity of non-rigid motion. Previous models based on neural activities in the primary visual cortex (V1) and the middle temporal area (MT) have been effective in explaining rigid motion perception. In this study, we extend the V1-MT model to address the perception of liquid flow direction. Participants observed video clips of liquid flow and reported the perceived direction, while the V1-MT model was used to predict these perceptions. The winner-take-all appro

High-throughput volumetric mapping of synaptic transmission.

Volumetric imaging of synaptic transmission in vivo requires high spatial and high temporal resolution. Shaping the wavefront of two-photon fluorescence excitation light, we developed Bessel-droplet foci for high-contrast and high-resolution volumetric imaging of synapses. Applying our method to imaging glutamate release, we demonstrated high-throughput mapping of excitatory inputs at >1,000 synapses per volume and >500 dendritic spines per neuron in vivo and unveiled previously unseen features of functional synaptic organization in the mouse primary visual cortex.

Visual form discrimination from texture cues: a PET study.

With the purpose of localising the cerebral cortical areas participating in the discrimination of visual form generated exclusively by texture cues, we measured changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) with positron emissions tomography (PET) and 15O-butanol as the tracer. The subjects performed two odd-one-out discrimination tasks: a form-from-texture discrimination task (in which a visual form was defined by differences in texture) and its reference task, the discrimination of texture. During task performance, activated fields were present bilaterally in the primary visual cortex and i

Cross-modal plasticity in adult single-sided deafness revealed by alpha band resting-state functional connectivity.

Single-sided deafness (SSD) or profound unilateral hearing loss is the condition where the transfer of acoustic information to the brain is restricted to one ear. SSD impairment is most evident under adverse acoustic environments with overlapping interference, which burdens cognitive resources. It is known that bilateral deafness induces cross-modal brain plasticity within visual cortical areas. Here we investigate whether similar cross-modal plasticity is observed in adult-onset SSD. In SSD patients (n = 29) and matched controls (n = 29) we estimated voxel level resting-state power and fu

Functional connectivity in cortical regions in dementia with Lewy bodies and Alzheimer's disease.

Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, spontaneous low-frequency fluctuations in the blood oxygenation level-dependent signal were measured to investigate connectivity between key brain regions hypothesized to be differentially affected in dementia with Lewy bodies compared with Alzheimer's disease and healthy controls. These included connections of the hippocampus, because of its role in learning, and parietal and occipital areas involved in memory, attention and visual processing. Connectivity was investigated in 47 subjects aged 60 years and over: 15 subjects with dement

Isolated cortical visual loss with subtle brain MRI abnormalities in a case of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

A 16-year-old boy who was briefly asystolic and hypotensive after a motor vehicle accident complained of abnormal vision after recovering consciousness. Visual acuity was normal, but visual fields were severely constricted without clear hemianopic features. The ophthalmic examination was otherwise normal. Brain MRI performed 11 days after the accident showed no pertinent abnormalities. At 6 months after the event, brain MRI demonstrated brain volume loss in the primary visual cortex and no other abnormalities. One year later, visual fields remained severely constricted; neurologic examination,

Degraded attentional modulation of cortical neural populations in strabismic amblyopia.

Behavioral studies have reported reduced spatial attention in amblyopia, a developmental disorder of spatial vision. However, the neural populations in the visual cortex linked with these behavioral spatial attention deficits have not been identified. Here, we use functional MRI-informed electroencephalography source imaging to measure the effect of attention on neural population activity in the visual cortex of human adult strabismic amblyopes who were stereoblind. We show that compared with controls, the modulatory effects of selective visual attention on the input from the amblyopic eye are

Enriched binocular experience followed by sleep optimally restores binocular visual cortical responses in a mouse model of amblyopia.

Studies of primary visual cortex have furthered our understanding of amblyopia, long-lasting visual impairment caused by imbalanced input from the two eyes during childhood, which is commonly treated by patching the dominant eye. However, the relative impacts of monocular vs. binocular visual experiences on recovery from amblyopia are unclear. Moreover, while sleep promotes visual cortex plasticity following loss of input from one eye, its role in recovering binocular visual function is unknown. Using monocular deprivation in juvenile male mice to model amblyopia, we compared recovery of corti

Functional evaluation using magnetic resonance imaging of the visual cortex in patients with retrochiasmatic lesions.

OBJECT: The goal of this study was to evaluate the clinical potential of combining functional magnetic resonance (fMR) imaging with conventional morphological MR imaging and to assess its usefulness for objective evaluation of visual function as part of treatment planning in patients harboring space-occupying lesions involving the posterior afferent visual system. METHODS: It was hypothesized that regional activation of the visual cortex during visual stimulation would show an asymmetric response consistent with the well-known retinotopical organization of the human visual cortex. On the contrast response function of adapted neural populations.

The magnitude of neural responses in sensory cortex depends on the intensity of a stimulus and its probability of being observed within the environment. How these two variables combine to influence the overall response of cortical populations remains unknown. Here we show that, in primary visual cortex, the vector magnitude of the population response is described by a separable power law that factors the intensity of a stimulus and its probability. Moreover, the discriminability between two contrast levels in a cortical population is proportional to the logarithm of the contrast ratio.NEW & NO

Microstructural properties of premotor pathways predict visuomotor performance in chronic stroke.

Microstructural properties of the corticospinal tract (CST) descending from the motor cortex predict strength and motor skill in the chronic phase after stroke. Much less is known about the relation between brain microstructure and visuomotor processing after stroke. In this study, individual's poststroke and age-matched controls performed a unimanual force task separately with each hand at three levels of visual gain. We collected diffusion MRI data and used probabilistic tractography algorithms to identify the primary and premotor CSTs. Fractional anisotropy (FA) within each tract was used t

Visual agnosia.

Visual agnosia is defined as an impairment of object recognition, in the absence of visual acuity or cognitive dysfunction that would explain this impairment. This condition is caused by lesions in the visual association cortex, sparing primary visual cortex. There are 2 main pathways that process visual information: the ventral stream, tasked with object recognition, and the dorsal stream, in charge of locating objects in space. Visual agnosia can therefore be divided into 2 major groups depending on which of the two streams is damaged. The aim of this article is to conduct a narrative review

Rapid and cumulative adult plasticity in the mouse visual cortex.

Experience-dependent neural plasticity enables the brain to adapt to diverse and dynamic environments by reshaping circuits. In the adult visual system, this plasticity can be elicited by repeated sensory stimuli; however, its temporal dynamics and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated the regulation of visual response potentiation induced by repeated light flashes in the primary visual cortex of awake adult mice. Our findings revealed two distinct temporal phases of potentiation: a rapid phase occurring within seconds and a cumulative phase developing over hours to days.

Lack of cross modal plasticity potentially linked to ongoing activation of visual cortex and superior colliculus in the rd10 mouse model of retinitis pigmentosa.

Efforts in vision restoration have been focused on a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, where photoreceptors in the retina degenerate while the rest of the visual pathway remain mostly intact. Retinal implants that directly stimulate retinal ganglion cells have shown promising but limited results in patients so far. Apart from technical limitations, cross-modal plasticity of visual areas might contribute to this problem. We therefore investigated if the primary visual cortex (V1) of the rd10 mouse model for retinal degeneration became more sensitive to auditory or tactile sensory inputs. A

Measuring graphical strength within the connectome: A neuroanatomic, parcellation-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Graph theory is a promising mathematical tool to study the connectome. However, little research has been undertaken to correlate graph metrics to functional properties of the brain. In this study, we report a unique association between the strength of cortical regions and their function. METHODS: Eight structural graphs were constructed within DSI Studio using publicly available imaging data derived from the Human Connectome Project. Whole-brain fiber tractography was performed to quantify the strength of each cortical region comprising our atlas. RESULTS: Rank-order analysis r

Retinotopic organization of striate and extrastriate visual cortex in the mouse.

Detailed retinotopic maps of primary visual cortex (area 17) and the extrastriate visual regions surrounding it (areas 18a and 18b) have been constructed for the C57BL/6J mouse using standard electrophysiological mapping techniques. Primary visual cortex (area 17), as defined cytoarchitectonically, contains one complete representation of the contralateral visual field, termed V1, in which azimuth and elevation lines are approximately orthogonal. The upper visual field is represented caudally and the nasal field laterally. Binocular cells are encountered in the cortical representation of the na
