4D printing, or additive manufacturing of stimuli-responsive materials, is transforming soft robotics by enabling the fabrication of complex, adaptive systems that evolve in shape and function over time. Due to their exceptional responsiveness and biocompatibility, hydrogels are well suited for 4D printing because they mimic the physicochemical and biochemical properties of natural tissues while generating programmable mechanical work that bridges stimuli-responsive chemistry and biomimetic motion. This article reviews the state of the art in 4D-printed hydrogel actuators across emerging biome

Bistable electrowetting displays (BEWDs) have become a competitive technical solution for low-power and static display fields due to their unique zero-power-consumption holding characteristics. However, traditional BEWD pixels face problems such as high driving voltage, complex processes, high cost, open structures, and difficulty in high-resolution array fabrication. Aiming at these bottlenecks, this paper proposes a closed stereoscopic bistable EWD pixel structure driven by planar and non-planar electrodes, and completes the design, fabrication, and performance verification of the device. Inkjet printing offers a scalable, material-efficient route for the patterning of optoelectronic devices, but the conventional pixel definition depends on the bank structures and multistep alignment, increasing the process complexity. Here, a single-step, interphase-controlled inkjet printing strategy is reported for the direct fabrication of micro-inlaid inverted organic light-emitting diodes (μ-inlaid IOLED) pixels on zinc oxide (ZnO) electron-transport layers. Chloroform-based inks containing a blend of small-molecule semiconductor solutes are deposited onto poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) ins

Medicine individualisation remains constrained by the limited availability of age-appropriate strengths and by extemporaneous practices that can compromise dose consistency. Direct extrusion 3D printing offers an alternative manufacturing method for personalised medicine, without introducing solvents, complex preparation, or post-processing that challenge the adoption in pharmacy. However, achieving uniform weight and drug content in small objects (e.g., paediatric-friendly minitablets) and lowering the preparation temperature remain challenges for direct extrusion-based 3D printing technologi

3D printing has enabled the development of patient-specific drug delivery systems and medical devices. Here, we report the fabrication of microneedle arrays using visible light-mediated photoinduced electron/energy-transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization via digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. A series of formulations based on poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA), and the RAFT agent 2-(n-butyltrithiocarbonate)-propionic acid (BTPA) were systematically investigated by varying formulation composition and exposu

Large chest wall defects may be challenging to reconstruct and requires consideration of skeletal stabilization. Whilst use of synthetic materials has been described, the risks of infection and implant failure resulting in removal are omnipresent. The vascularized fibula free flap is an autologous alternative. We present the first reported application of 3D-printed patient-matched fibula marking guide to facilitate reconstruction of a large sternal defect with an autologous vascularized fibula free flap. A 56-year-old patient developed paradoxical chest wall movements with chest pain following

Microgels offer unique advantages over bulk hydrogels due to their improved diffusion limits for oxygen and nutrients. Particularly, stimuli-responsive microgels with inherently bioactive and self-supporting properties emerge as highly promising biomaterials. This study unveils the development of interparticle-crosslinked, self-supporting, ion-responsive microgels tailored for 3D and 4D (bio)printing applications. A novel strategy was proposed to develop microgels that enabled interparticle crosslinking, eliminating the need for filler hydrogels and preserving essential microscale void spaces

Lipid-based excipients (LBE) are a crucial class of functional excipients with significant potential for pharmaceutical formulation and product development. The wide variety of molecules in this class provides opportunities for designing novel dosage forms. However, the utilization of LBEs for 3D-printing applications is currently limited, thereby hindering the full potential of lipids and impeding the advancement of 3D-printing technologies. Notably, only a few publications report the 3D-printing of lipid-based formulations. This review provides a detailed discussion and analysis of these pub

Utilizing aerosol jet printing (AJP), this study achieves a breakthrough in fabricating luminescent fibers with superior optical performance and flexibility. The Y2O3:Eu3+ coated high silica glass fibers demonstrate luminous efficiency twice that of traditional methods, retaining 80% after 250 bending cycles and 90% after sweat immersion. This AJP technique not only elevates the potential of smart fabrics but also represents a significant innovation in lighting technology, providing new ideas for advanced functional fiber fabrication.

Background/Objectives. Flavonoids are a vast class of phenolic substances. To date, approximately 6000 plant-origin flavonoids have been discovered, with many of them being used in drug therapy. Therapeutic flavonoids are commonly formulated to conventional "one-size-fits-all" dosage forms, such as conventional tablets or hard capsules. However, the current trends in pharmacy and medicine are centred on personalised drug therapy and drug delivery systems (DDSs). Therefore, 3D printing is an interesting technique for designing and preparing novel personalised pharmaceuticals for flavonoids. The

The mechanism and physiology of orbital cavity remodeling after orbital fractures is not well described. This poses a challenge in the delayed operative treatment of orbital floor fractures due to variations from expected anatomy and may risk injury to critical structures during exploration as well as misguided reconstruction, causing persistent ocular dystopia. We report a case where significant orbital remodeling caused unexpected challenges to orbital floor reconstruction, highlighting the need for further research in this field. A 23-year-old previously healthy man was treated conservative

Single-cell printing technology has arisen as a potent instrument for investigating cell biology and disease pathophysiology. Nonetheless, current single-cell printing methodologies are hindered by restricted throughput, a limited field of view, and diminished efficiency. We present an innovative single-cell printing chip that utilizes thermal inkjet technology for single-cell printing, therefore addressing these constraints. We have accomplished high-throughput, wide-field, and efficient single-cell printing by merging a high-density thermal foam-based inkjet nozzle array on a chip with high-

Currently available benchtop (in vitro) aneurysm models are inadequate for testing the efficacy of endovascular device treatments. Specifically, current models do not represent the mechanical instability of giant aneurysms (defined as aneurysms with 25 mm in height or width) and do not predictably rupture under simulated physiological conditions. Hence, in vitro aneurysm models with biomechanically relevant material properties and a predictable rupture timeframe are needed to accurately assess the efficacy of new medical device treatment options. Understanding the material properties of an ane
