Inferring the existence of hydrogen bonds directly from statistical analysis of molecular dynamics trajectories.

As a demonstration of how fundamental chemical concepts can be gleaned from data using machine learning methods, we demonstrate the automated detection of hydrogen bonds by statistical analysis of molecular dynamics trajectories. In particular, we infer the existence and nature of electrostatically driven noncovalent interactions by examining the relative probability of supramolecular configurations with and without electrostatic interactions. Then, using Laplacian eigenmaps clustering, we identify hydrogen bonding motifs in hydrogen fluoride, water, and methanol. The hydrogen bonding motifs t

The diagnostic value of cerebellar-vestibular tests in detecting learning disabilities, dyslexia, and attention deficit disorder.

Neurological and optokinetic measures of cerebellar-vestibular (CV) dysfunctioning were shown to be of significant diagnostic value in differentiating between learning disabled subjects and controls matched for chronological age, sex, handedness, IQ, and background (ns = 35). Although traditionally used electronystagmographic positional and caloric parameters were not similarly discriminating, quantitative measures of vertical nystagmus in various eyes-closed positions appeared to have diagnostic potential and were related significantly to such CV-determined neurological signs as positive mono

Feasibility of Machine Learning and Logistic Regression Algorithms to Predict Outcome in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Statistical models using machine learning (ML) have the potential for more accurate estimates of the probability of binary events than logistic regression. The present study used existing data sets from large musculoskeletal trauma trials to address the following study questions: (1) Do ML models produce better probability estimates than logistic regression models? (2) Are ML models influenced by different variables than logistic regression models? METHODS: We created ML and logistic regression models that estimated the probability of a specific fracture (posterior malleolar invol

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty video annotation: analysis of the learning curve of three annotators to achieve procedure proficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic interventional skills acquisition generally relies on apprenticeship-based training. Limitations of this learning model include the availability of trainers and human-factor biases. Increased routine surgical and endoscopic video recording and storage promote video-based learning (VBL) methods. VBL could shorten the learning curve by increasing trainer availability and democratizing training access for procedures such as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), which is carried out by a few expert operators. The aim of this work was to evaluate video annotation as a learn

Machine-Learning-Based Approach to Differential Diagnosis in Tuberculous and Viral Meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of tuberculosis, but differentiating between the diagnosis of TBM and viral meningitis (VM) is difficult. Thus, we have developed machine-learning modules for differentiating TBM from VM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the training data, confirmed or probable TBM and confirmed VM cases were retrospectively collected from five teaching hospitals in Korea between January 2000 - July 2018. Various machine-learning algorithms were used for training. The machine-learning algorithms were tested by the leave-one-out cross-validation. Four r

Stimulus-response learning in long-term cocaine users: acquired equivalence and probabilistic category learning.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine stimulus-response (S-R) learning in active cocaine users. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two cocaine-dependent participants (20 males and 2 females) and 21 non-drug using control participants (19 males and 2 females) who were similar in age and education were administered two computerized learning tasks. The Acquired Equivalence task initially requires learning of simple antecedent-consequent discriminations, but later requires generalization of this learning when the stimuli are presented in novel recombinations. Sequential learning of emotional faces is statistical at 12 months of age.

Infants are capable of extracting statistical regularities from continuous streams of elements, which helps them structuring their surrounding environment. The current study examines 12-month-olds' capacity to extract statistical information from a sequence of emotional faces. Using a familiarization procedure, infants were presented with videos of two actresses expressing the same facial emotion, and subsequently turning toward or away from each other. Videos displayed different emotions (i.e., anger, happiness, fear, sadness, surprise, amusement, disgust, and exasperation) and were organized

Uncertainty-guided pancreatic tumor auto-segmentation with Tversky ensemble.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pancreatic gross tumor volume (GTV) delineation is challenging due to their variable morphology and uncertain ground truth. Previous deep learning-based auto-segmentation methods have struggled to handle tasks with uncertain ground truth and have not accommodated stylistic customizations. We aim to develop a human-in-the-loop pancreatic GTV segmentation tool using Tversky ensembles by leveraging uncertainty estimation techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, we utilized a total of 282 patients from the pancreas task of the Medical Segmentation Decathlon. Thirty

Unveiling the alterations of action processing and mu rhythm in Williams Syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by social difficulties, which may stem from atypical action processing. We investigated whether individuals with WS show impaired action processing as indexed by electroencephalographic (EEG) mu suppression, a biomarker of action processing. 17 individuals with WS, 17 healthy controls (HC) and 17 individuals with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) participated in the study. During EEG recording, participants performed a task requiring to predict actions under perceptual ambiguity. In a preceding learning phase, the pro

A novel machine learning model for screening the risk of obstructive sleep apnea using craniofacial photography with questionnaires.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Undiagnosed or untreated moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases cardiovascular risks and mortality. Early and efficient detection is critical, given its high prevalence. We aimed to develop a practical and efficient approach for OSA screening, using simple facial photography and sleep questionnaires. METHODS: We retrospectively included 748 participants who completed polysomnography, sleep questionnaires (STOP-BANG), and facial photographs at a university hospital between 2012 and 2023. Owing to class imbalance, we randomly undersampled the participants,

Ensemble learning incorporating uncertain registration.

This paper proposes a novel approach for improving the accuracy of statistical prediction methods in spatially normalized analysis. This is achieved by incorporating registration uncertainty into an ensemble learning scheme. A probabilistic registration method is used to estimate a distribution of probable mappings between subject and atlas space. This allows the estimation of the distribution of spatially normalized feature data, e.g., grey matter probability maps. From this distribution, samples are drawn for use as training examples. This allows the creation of multiple predictors, which ar

Who's at risk on the road? Demonstrating young and novice driver risk in low-to middle-income contexts.

INTRODUCTION: Young novice drivers experience higher crash rates, yet most studies focus on high‑income countries, leaving limited evidence from low‑ and middle‑income countries (LMICs). This study examined crash involvement and its risk factors in Colombia to inform improvements to the national driver‑licensing process. METHODS: We analyzed the national driver‑license registry from 2007 to 2020 (n = 5,822,842) and all police‑reported road crashes during the same period (n = 541,134). Crash probability was modeled with a non‑parametric machine‑learning approach (random forests) and, for inter

Linear and nonlinear features of EEG microstate associated with insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have revealed abnormalities in EEG microstate in insomnia, primarily quantified using linear features, whereas nonlinear metrics remain underexplored. This study aimed to compare linear and nonlinear features and further assess their contributions to insomnia classification using machine learning. METHODS: Five minutes of resting-state EEG was recorded from 55 patients with insomnia (IN, 32 females, 20.057 ± 1.499 years) and 67 healthy controls (HC, 40 females, 20.138 ± 1.944 years). Diagnosis of the Pneumatic Wheel Condition Based on Vibration Analysis of the Sprung Mass in the Vehicle Self-Diagnostics System.

This paper presents a method for the multi-criteria classification of data in terms of identifying pneumatic wheel imbalance on the basis of vehicle body vibrations in normal operation conditions. The paper uses an expert system based on search graphs that apply source features of objects and distances from points in the space of classified objects (the metric used). Rules generated for data obtained from tests performed under stationary and road conditions using a chassis dynamometer were used to develop the expert system. The recorded linear acceleration signals of the vehicle body were anal

Automated In Vivo High-Resolution Imaging to Detect Human Papillomavirus-Associated Anal Precancer in Persons Living With HIV.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, the effectiveness of anal cancer screening programs has been limited by a lack of trained professionals proficient in high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) and a high patient lost-to-follow-up rate between diagnosis and treatment. Simplifying anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or more severe (AIN 2+) detection could radically improve the access and efficiency of anal cancer prevention. Novel optical imaging providing point-of-care diagnoses could substantially improve existing HRA and histology-based diagnosis. This work aims to demonstrate the potential of hig

Age and sex differences in behavioral flexibility, sensitivity to reward value, and risky decision-making.

Compared with adults, adolescent behavior is often characterized by reduced behavioral flexibility, increased sensitivity to reward, and increased likelihood to take risks. These traits, which have been hypothesized to confer heightened vulnerability to psychopathologies such as substance use disorders (SUDs), have been the focus of studies in laboratory animal models that seek to understand their neural underpinnings. However, rodent studies to date have typically used only males and have adopted standard methodological practices (e.g., weight loss inducing food restriction) that are likely t

Diagnostic performance 1 h after simulation training predicts learning.

Although simulation training improves post-training performance, it is unclear how well performance soon after simulation training predicts longer term outcomes (i.e., learning). Here our objective was to assess the predictive value of performance 1 h post-training of performance 6 weeks later. We trained 84 first year medical students a simulated case of chest pain due to aortic stenosis. They then received training on a case of acute onset dyspnea due to pulmonary embolism, after which we evaluated diagnostic performance on their trained murmur followed by novel murmur. We repeated the evalu

Modeling the Pretest Probability of Identifying Druggable Mutations in Lung Cancer Using Nationwide Comprehensive Genomic Profiling Data.

PURPOSE: Comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) is a key strategy in precision medicine for lung cancer, yet its clinical implementation remains limited, partly because of the uncertainty in identifying druggable mutations in individual patients. In this study, we investigated the potential of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool to predict the probability of identifying druggable mutations before CGP (pretest probability). METHODS: We developed an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) prediction model trained on pre-CGP clinical variables from 3,470 patients with lung cancer (June 2019-No

Ensemble ecological niche modeling of West Nile virus probability in Florida.

Ecological Niche Modeling is a process by which spatiotemporal, climatic, and environmental data are analyzed to predict the distribution of an organism. Using this process, an ensemble ecological niche model for West Nile virus habitat prediction in the state of Florida was developed. This model was created through the weighted averaging of three separate machine learning models-boosted regression tree, random forest, and maximum entropy-developed for this study using sentinel chicken surveillance and remote sensing data. Variable importance differed among the models. The highest variable per
