An object-oriented class library for medical software development.

The objective of this research is the development of a Medical Object Library (MOL) consisting of reusable, inheritable, portable, extendable C++ classes that facilitate rapid development of medical software at reduced cost and increased functionality. The result of this research is a library of class objects that range in function from string and hierarchical file handling entities to high level, procedural agents that perform increasingly complex, integrated tasks. A system built upon these classes is compatible with any other system similarly constructed with respect to data definitions, se

Science fiction becomes reality with M technologies.

Sophisticated data management--the ability to share information across geographical and technical boundaries via heterogeneous networks with seamless interoperability--was the stuff of science fiction just a few years ago. It is now a reality with M. Thomas Salander, vice chair of the M Technology Association and chairman of the MUMPS Development Committee, sets the scene and shows the way.

Brigham and Women's Hospital plans large MUMPS-based PC network.

Though many people say it simply cannot be done, Brigham and Women's Hospital is successfully implementing a network of 4,000 MUMPS-based PCs. The system takes advantage of standard hardware and software, and requires no customization. Today, the network serves as a prototype of similar installations nationwide.

Perspectives of speech-language pathologists on the use of telepractice in schools: quantitative survey results.

This research surveyed 170 school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in one northeastern state, with only 1.8% reporting telepractice use in school-settings. These results were consistent with two ASHA surveys (2002; 2011) that reported limited use of telepractice for school-based speech-language pathology. In the present study, willingness to use telepractice was inversely related to age, perhaps because younger members of the profession are more accustomed to using technology. Overall, respondents were concerned about the validity of assessments administered via telepractice; whether

Phonological reading skills acquisition by children with mental retardation.

Twenty children with mental retardation (MR), age 7-12, completed a phonological reading skills program over approximately 10 weeks. As a result of the instruction, they were better able to sound out learned and transfer words compared to a control group matched on age, IQ, nonword reading, language comprehension, and phonemic awareness. Final sounding out was predicted by beginning reading skill in both groups, by phonemic awareness and articulation speed in the control group only, and by general language ability in the instruction group only. Neither IQ nor verbal working memory correlated s

Language-Based Disparities in Emergency Department Referral to Substance Use Treatment: Lost in Translation.

Emergency department (ED)-based substance use navigation programs have expanded access to addiction treatment, yet little is known about whether these programs equitably serve immigrant and refugee patients, particularly those with limited English proficiency. Language barriers are associated with reduced utilization of behavioral health services and lower likelihood of receiving appropriate referrals. We examined whether preferred language was associated with receipt of a substance use consultation with a trained health promotion advocate from Project ASSERT. We conducted a retrospective cros

The effectiveness of a specifically-designed language intervention protocol on the cochlear implanted children's communication development.

OBJECTIVE: Although various studies have depicted the importance of language intervention programs in facilitating language acquisition in cochlear implanted children, to this date rarely has a specific language intervention approach been recommended as better than the other and no best practice has been introduced in terms of language acquisition outcomes. Thus, the therapists remain uncertain as to which approach to follow and how to apply evidence to practice. Hence, the main goal of this study was to take a step in this regard by comparing the communication development of pediatric cochlea

MUBD-DecoyMaker 2.0: A Python GUI Application to Generate Maximal Unbiased Benchmarking Data Sets for Virtual Drug Screening.

Ligand enrichment assessment based on benchmarking data sets has become a necessity for the rational selection of the best-suited approach for prospective data mining of drug-like molecules. Up to now, a variety of benchmarking data sets had been generated and frequently used. Among them, MUBD-HDACs from our prior research efforts was regarded as one of five state-of-the-art benchmarks in 2017 by Frontiers in Pharmacology. This benchmarking set was generated by one of our unique de-biasing algorithms. It also rendered quite a few other cases of successful applications in recent years, thus is

Increased resting-state functional connectivity of visual- and cognitive-control brain networks after training in children with reading difficulties.

The Reading Acceleration Program, a computerized reading-training program, increases activation in neural circuits related to reading. We examined the effect of the training on the functional connectivity between independent components related to visual processing, executive functions, attention, memory, and language during rest after the training. Children 8-12 years old with reading difficulties and typical readers participated in the study. Behavioral testing and functional magnetic resonance imaging were performed before and after the training. Imaging data were analyzed using an independe

Words matter: Stigmatizing language in medical records of individuals electing medication for opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: There has been a concerted effort to minimize the use of stigmatizing language in healthcare settings; however, its prevalence in health record documentation remains high. This study examined clinicians' stigmatizing and patients' self-stigmatizing language in medical records for patients electing medication for opioid use disorder in two settings, office-based opioid treatment and opioid treatment programs. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, data were extracted from health records for a distributed provider network serving publicly funded patients in Texas. Patients see

Speech, language and hearing in Moebius syndrome: a study of 22 patients.

A comprehensive profile of communicative disorders in patients with Moebius syndrome was attempted. Seven patients were evaluated by the authors and the findings were added to 15 contributed case-histories. Most patients demonstrated some degree of dysarthria due to congenital paralysis of the facial nerves. Other problems such as cleft palate, hearing loss, mental retardation and delayed development of language were found in a few of the patients. As most of the older children in the sample and in reports in the literature eventually developed intelligible speech, a program of oral language s

Treatment efficacy: cognitive-communicative disorders resulting from traumatic brain injury in adults.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) may result in a broad array of cognitive-communicative impairments. Cognitive-communicative impairments are the result of deficits in linguistic and nonlinguistic cognitive functions. The speech-language pathologist functions as a member of the multidisciplinary team of professionals that collaboratively assess and treat individuals with TBI. The role of the speech-language pathologist includes assessment of all aspects of communication, as well as the communicative implications of cognitive deficits, and swallowing; treatment planning and programming, as determi

Foreign language acquisition of perceptually similar segments: evidence from Lower Sorbian.

Lower Sorbian is a moribund language spoken in Eastern Germany that features a three-way sibilant contrast, /s, ʂ, ɕ/. The vast majority of L1 speakers are above eighty years of age and virtually no young Sorbians learn Lower Sorbian as their first language. There are language revitalization programs in place, but this means that virtually all Lower Sorbian speakers are L2 learners whose first language is German. German, as opposed to Lower Sorbian, has a two-way sibilant contrast, /s, ʃ/. So, Lower Sorbian learners need to acquire a perceptually similar sibilant contrast, /ʂ, ɕ/, that commonl

Melodic intonation therapy: back to basics for future research.

We present a critical review of the literature on melodic intonation therapy (MIT), one of the most formalized treatments used by speech-language therapist in Broca's aphasia. We suggest basic clarifications to enhance the scientific support of this promising treatment. First, therapeutic protocols using singing as a speech facilitation technique are not necessarily MIT. The goal of MIT is to restore propositional speech. The rationale is that patients can learn a new way to speak through singing by using language-capable regions of the right cerebral hemisphere. Eventually, patients are suppo

Two approaches to the facilitation of grammar in children with language impairment: an experimental evaluation.

Two approaches to grammar facilitation in preschool-age children with language impairment were evaluated. One approach was administered by a speech-language pathologist and the other was presented by the subjects' parents, who were trained by the speech-language pathologist. Both treatment packages ran for 4 1/2 months and made use of focused stimulation procedures and a cyclical goal-attack strategy. Subjects were 30 children between the ages of 3:8 and 5:10 (years:months) who had marked delays in grammatical development. Children who served in a delayed-treatment control group averaged no ga
