OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of complications of diagnostic and operative hysteroscopic procedures in the Netherlands and describe their nature.
METHODS: Data on complications were recorded by 82 hospitals in 1997. Participating hospitals had a 100% response rate. Any unexpected events that required intraoperative or postoperative intervention were defined as complications in two groups: approach (entry-related) and technique-related (caused by surgical instruments).

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder, progressive and with a variable evolution. In 10-25% of cases, thyroid ophthalmopathy (or dysthyroid ophthalmopathy) occurs in the absence of both clinical and biochemical evidence of thyroid dysfunction. In patients with Graves' disease, ocular modification may precede, coincide with or follow of Graves' disease. Dysthyroid ophthalmopathy has in 85% of cases bilateral proptosis more than a half in unilateral proptosis.

PURPOSE: This prospective study examines uniocular blindness among children younger than 16 attending a large pediatric ophthalmology department. The aim was to identify the causes of uniocular blindness and determine how much is preventable. We defined blindness according to the World Health Organization definition of vision worse than or equal to 3/60.
METHODS: All children who attended the department and were blind in one eye during the period of the study were included. A history was taken, visual acuity was assessed by an age-appropriate method, and an ocular examination was carried out.

A prospective study of 50 adult quinsy tonsillectomy anaesthetics was performed. There were no significant anaesthetic or surgical complications and the mean intra-operative blood loss was 176 ml. Because of the diminishing number of patients diagnosed with otosclerosis, the adequacy of residency training in stapedectomy techniques remains controversial. A prospective study, conducted from 1986 to 1991, assessed whether or not surgical outcome obtained by residents, under close supervision by otologic faculty, could be improved using a single stapedectomy technique. One hundred and ten Ethiopian thyrotoxic patients were studied between February 1986 and January 1991 in a weekly endocrine clinic of Tikur Anbessa Teaching Hospital (TATH) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This gives an incidence of 22 patients per year. There were 14 males and 96 females (M:F = 1:7). Fifty three patients (48.2%) had Graves' hyperthyroidism, 37 (33.7%) toxic multinodular goitre (TMNG), 14 (12.7%) toxic adenoma, 4 (3.6%) Jodbasedow phenomenon and 2 (1.8%) had thyroiditis. During 1967 to 1985, three cases of listeriosis were reported in Algeria; at that time Listeria monocytogenes caused several thousand cases of meningitis and sepsis in the world. In order to determine the frequency and bacteriologic characteristics of strain isolated in Algeria, a prospective investigation was carried from 1985 to 1989 in humans and animals samples. It has been made a review of 238 myringoplasties done in the last three years (1988-90) at the Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital. In this work are only contemplated the plain myringoplasties. Tympanoplasties because cholesteatoma and ossiculoplasties are excluded. Some characteristics are studied: age, sex, ear state, kind of perforation, ossicular chain state and others. Anatomical and functional results are analyzed as also the relationship between the type of perforation with the audiometric loose and anatomic success.

This work examines demographic and clinical characteristics of 163 consecutive cases of acute spinal injuries in a small area of Western Turkey, since 1982. These include all spinal injuries with or without neurological symptoms. Combined conservative and surgical methods were used for treatment. Age, sex, etiology, site of injury, radiologic findings, neurological status, and outcome are compared with the other studies. The results have been found to be parallel to those of the other studies except for some regional differences like an excess of tractor accidents.

This prospective study was undertaken to determine the incidence, severity, time of onset, and duration of coagulopathy in children following accidental ingestion of long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides, often called "superwarfarins."
