Influence of residual bone thickness on primary stability of hybrid self-tapping and cylindric non-self-tapping implants in vitro.

PURPOSE: To assess the primary stability of a hybrid self-tapping implant and a cylindric non-self-tapping implant in an in vitro test model using polyurethane foam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty standardized blocks of cellular rigid polyurethane foam, 2 cm long and 1 cm wide, with different thicknesses of 2, 4, 6, and 9 mm (n = 10 per group) were cut. Two implant systems--a hybrid self-tapping (Tapered Effect [TE], Straumann) and a cylindric non-self-tapping (Standard Plus [SP] Wide Neck, Straumann) were placed in the block specimens. Subsequently, resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was perf

Patient satisfaction and dissatisfaction with mandibular two-implant overdentures using different attachment systems: 5-year outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Different attachment systems for mandibular two-implant overdentures could influence levels of patient satisfaction. Positive consensus of the majority of patients being satisfied does not preclude the possibility of dissatisfaction for some. PURPOSE: To evaluate patient satisfaction and dissatisfaction before and after 5 years of wearing mandibular two implant overdentures using different attachment systems ; to determine the prognostic relevance of pretreatment complete denture complaints to treatment outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 106 edentulous participants enrol

[Implant-supported prostheses for the edentulous patient after partial maxillectomy--clinical considerations in the choice of retention elements--2 case reports].

The prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulous patients following hemimaxillectomy proves to be functionally unsatisfactory in many cases because of a heavily changed oral morphology and oral communication with the nasal and maxillary sinus cavities, which makes it difficult to achieve a sufficient retention and stability of the restoration using a conventional obturator denture. Using implants as anchorage increases comfort considerably for patients wearing such restorations. Due to the wide variety of the individual anatomy of the defect area and the residual parts of intact maxilla clinicians

Retrospective evaluation of temporary cemented, tooth and implant supported fixed partial dentures.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine the clinical performance of this method, and determine which temporary cement was the most appropriate. METHODS: Dental fixtures (Tiolox implants GmbH, Germany) were implanted and crown and bridgework applied in a private practice between 1998 and 2003. Copings made of pure gold or titanium were permanently cemented onto the prepared teeth. The bridges were attached with either conventional temporary cements (Zinc oxide/ calcium hydroxide based) or acrylic/urethane cement (IMProv) both to the copings and to the implant abutments. Complication

The scientific basis for and clinical experiences with Straumann implants including the ITI Dental Implant System: a consensus report.

Successful endosseous implant therapy requires integration of the implant with bone, soft connective tissue and epithelium. This report from a consensus conference on Straumann dental implants including the ITI Dental Implant System documents the interaction of these nonsubmerged one-piece implants with the oral tissues and reviews clinical studies supporting the high success achievable with these implants in patients. Light and electron microscopy reveal that epithelial structures similar to teeth are found around the implants. A connective tissue zone exists between the apical extension of t

Failed Debridement and Implant Retention Does Not Compromise the Success of Subsequent Staged Revision in Infected Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is the leading cause of early revisions after total knee arthroplasty. Debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) procedures are often the initial treatment for PJI. However, there is concern that failed DAIR undermines the future success of revision procedures. This study aims to investigate the impact of DAIR on the success of subsequent staged revisions for PJI. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective review was performed over a 15-year period. Treatment success was defined as implant retention without the use of long-term suppressi

Outcomes of knee arthrodesis in proximal femoral focal deficiency.

Treatment options for patients with severe forms of proximal femoral focal deficiency include limb salvage procedures or foot ablation and use of a prosthesis. In patients with amputation, an ipsilateral knee arthrodesis can provide an efficient lever arm that is easy to contain in a prosthetic socket. We performed a retrospective review of proximal femoral focal deficiency patients treated at a single institution with knee arthrodesis. From 1986 to 2018, 26 patients (18 males, eight females) met study inclusion criteria (mean follow-up 13.2 years). Aitken C or D deformities were present in 65

Tips and tricks of inflatable penile prosthesis reservoir placement: a case presentation and discussion.

INTRODUCTION: There have been many advances in the inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) since the 1970s. While these devices were initially fraught with mechanical malfunction, the most recent models prove to be much more reliable. Although reservoir complications are not common, when they do occur, it typically involves damage to the surrounding tissues. The ability to recognize and treat these complications is paramount for any surgeon that routinely places IPPs. AIM: The aim of this article was to present a unique reservoir-related complication as well as perform a literature review of reser

Comparative experiments for in vivo fibroplasia and biological stability of four porous polymers intended for use in the Seoul-type keratoprosthesis.

AIMS: To evaluate in vivo fibroplasia and biological stability of porous polymers intended for use in the Seoul-type keratoprosthesis (S-KPro). METHODS: Four porous polymers (polypropylene, two kinds of polyethylene terephthalate (PE70 and PE50), and polyurethane) were investigated. Discs of polymers were inserted into the corneal stroma of rabbits for a 2 and 5 month period. Corneal oedema and neovascularisation were evaluated. The fibroplasia and collagen deposition were examined under light and transmission electron microscopy. S-KPros, whose skirt was made of four types of polymer, were i

Digitally Guided Advanced Prosthodontic Rehabilitation for Post-COVID-19 Mucormycosis Using Patient-Specific Implants: A Case Report.

This case report describes the prosthodontic rehabilitation of a middle-aged male patient who underwent bilateral low-level maxillectomy due to post-COVID-19 mucormycosis. The oronasal communication was closed using an anterior base tongue flap. Two patient-specific subperiosteal implants were placed to rehabilitate the patient's bony defect. Using a postsurgical CT scan, a virtually customized subperiosteal titanium framework was created from grade IV titanium alloy. The fabricated framework was implanted over the patient's zygomatic bone bilaterally. Six months later, the right-sided patient

Timing of implant-removal in late acute periprosthetic joint infection: A multicenter observational study.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the treatment outcome in late acute (LA) periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) treated with debridement and implant retention (DAIR) versus implant removal. METHODS: In a large multicenter study, LA PJIs of the hip and knee were retrospectively evaluated. Failure was defined as: PJI related death, prosthesis removal or the need for suppressive antibiotic therapy. LA PJI was defined as acute symptoms <3 weeks in patients more than 3 months after the index surgery and with a history of normal joint function. RESULTS: 445 patients were included, comprising 340 cases tre

Long-term outcomes and complications of full-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses: a 4-10 year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Edentulism has significant functional and psychosocial consequences, and full-arch implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) have become one of the most reliable rehabilitation options. However, long-term outcomes of prostheses due to prosthesis-related and patient-related risk factors remain limited. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the long-term clinical performance, rates of complication types of full-arch implant-supported FDPs over a 4-10-year follow-up period. Additionally, the potential influence of patient- and prostheses- related risk factors—particularly bruxism,

Clinical performance of a conometric retention system for single implant restorations: 1-year analysis of a prospective multicenter study.

PURPOSE: Conventional screw- and cement-retained single implant restorations are associated with biological and technical complications. Friction-retained conometric concepts have been proposed as an alternative; however, clinical evidence for single crowns, particularly from prospective multicenter studies, remains limited. This study evaluated the 1-year clinical performance of a conometric retention system for implant-supported single crowns. METHODS: This prospective multicenter study was conducted at nine clinical centers in Europe and North America. Subjects requiring single-tooth repla

Rehabilitation of an extraoral and intraoral defect complicated with microstomia. A study case.

A 72-year-old man was referred from the surgery department for rehabilitation following surgical resection of Basaloid carcinoma. The first surgical intervention involved the anterior palatal region and was restored with a simple obturator. Two years later further surgery was undertaken to excise a recurrent tumor in the nose and part of the cheek. This resulted in an exposed nasal cavity and maxillary sinus. In addition, there was a small oral aperture composed of thin tissue that stretched to its maximum due to scar formation. The defect was restored with a full thickness skin flap but it su
