Avian trichomonosis mortality events in band-tailed pigeons (Patagioenas fasciata) in California during winter 2014-2015.

Avian trichomonosis is an upper digestive tract disease of birds typically caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas gallinae. In California (U.S.A), trichomonosis is known to cause periodic epidemics in the Pacific Coast band-tailed pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata monolis), a migratory upland game bird. We summarize the mortality events that occurred during winter 2014-2015 including the duration, estimated mortality, pathology, and genetic identity of infecting parasites. Increased mortality was reported from locations in 25 counties between November 2014 and June 2015. Based on reports, car

Detection and molecular characterization of chicken astrovirus associated with chicks that have an unusual condition known as "white chicks" in Brazil.

Chicken astrovirus (CAstV) is one of many viruses related to enteric diseases in poultry that are associated with Runting-Stunting Syndrome (RSS), which affects young chickens. CAstV was also recently associated with an unusual condition in chicks called "white chicks." Some hatcheries in certain states of Brazil have reported several incubation problems, mortality, and the presence of chicks with white plumages over the past several months. These chicks were termed locally as "white chicks." The present work investigated 30 chicks with this unusual condition using a multidisciplinary approach

Feeding Behavior Modulates Biofilm-Mediated Transmission of Yersinia pestis by the Cat Flea, Ctenocephalides felis.

BACKGROUND: The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is prevalent worldwide, will parasitize animal reservoirs of plague, and is associated with human habitations in known plague foci. Despite its pervasiveness, limited information is available about the cat flea's competence as a vector for Yersinia pestis. It is generally considered to be a poor vector, based on studies examining early-phase transmission during the first week after infection, but transmission potential by the biofilm-dependent proventricular-blocking mechanism has never been systematically evaluated. In this study, we assessed t

Transcript expression analysis of putative Trypanosoma brucei GPI-anchored surface proteins during development in the tsetse and mammalian hosts.

Human African Trypanosomiasis is a devastating disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei. Trypanosomes live extracellularly in both the tsetse fly and the mammal. Trypanosome surface proteins can directly interact with the host environment, allowing parasites to effectively establish and maintain infections. Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchoring is a common posttranslational modification associated with eukaryotic surface proteins. In T. brucei, three GPI-anchored major surface proteins have been identified: variant surface glycoproteins (VSGs), procyclic acidic repetitive prote

Biofilm formation is not required for early-phase transmission of Yersinia pestis.

Early-phase transmission (EPT) is a recently described model of plague transmission that explains the rapid spread of disease from flea to mammal host during an epizootic. Unlike the traditional blockage-dependent model of plague transmission, EPT can occur when a flea takes its first blood meal after initially becoming infected by feeding on a bacteraemic host. Blockage of the flea gut results from biofilm formation in the proventriculus, mediated by the gene products found in the haemin storage (hms) locus of the Yersinia pestis chromosome. Although biofilms are required for blockage-depende

Pathogenicity and genomic characterization of Brazilian fowl adenovirus serotypes 1 and 11.

Fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs) are important pathogens affecting poultry worldwide. Different serotypes cause distinct disease syndromes in domestic chickens, including gizzard erosions (GE), inclusion body hepatitis (IBH), and hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (HHS). Despite the economic impact, the evaluation of pathogenicity and genomic features of Brazilian isolates has not yet been assessed. This study aimed to investigate the pathogenic characteristics and whole-genome features of two FAdV Brazilian isolates, BRMSA3762 (FAdV-1) and BRMSA3761 (FAdV-11). For this, pathogenicity was evaluated

RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW OF MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN A POPULATION OF CAPTIVE BUDGERIGARS (MELOPSITTACUS UNDULATES).

This retrospective study reviews the diseases associated with morbidity and mortality in 221 budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) from a captive population from 2013 to 2019. The study aimed to evaluate the health status of a flock of budgerigars typical of today's zoologic collections. Based on previous literature, it was hypothesized that age-related conditions such as neoplasia would be common, whereas metabolic and nutritional disorders would be less common. Neoplasia was widespread among the population, affecting 34% of birds (75/221). Carcinomas made up most neoplastic processes and mos

'A flying start': Wildlife trypanosomes in tissues of Australian tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae).

Tabanids (syn. horse flies) are biting-flies of medical and veterinary significance because of their ability to transmit a range of pathogens including trypanosomes - some species of which carry a combined health and biosecurity risk. Invertebrate vectors responsible for transmitting species of Trypanosoma between Australian wildlife remains unknown, thus establishing the role of potential vector candidates such as tabanids is of utmost importance. The current study aimed to investigate the presence of indigenous trypanosomes in tabanids from an endemic area of south-west Australia. A total of

Identification, tissue characterization, and innate immune role of Angiogenin-4 expression in young broiler chickens.

Intestinal epithelial cells are major producers of antimicrobial proteins, which play an important role in innate immunity. In addition to defensins, the Ribonuclease A superfamily includes important antimicrobial proteins involved in host-defense mechanisms in vertebrates. Angiogenin-4 (Ang4), a member of this RNase superfamily, has been demonstrated to be secreted by Paneth cells in mice. We have successfully cloned and characterized a new chicken gene (chAng4), found for the first time in a nonmammalian species, from intestinal epithelial and lymphoid cells. Characterization of chAng4 revea

The influence of indigestible protein on broiler digestive tract morphology and caecal protein fermentation metabolites.

Indigestible dietary protein fermentation products have been suggested to negatively influence broiler performance due to their impact on health and digestive tract morphology. This study evaluated the digestive tract morphology and caecal protein fermentation metabolites of broiler fed 3 dietary protein levels (24%, 26% and 28%) with low or high indigestible protein (LIP, HIP). Two completely randomized 3 × 2 factorial trials were conducted with protein level (PL) and indigestible protein (IDP) as the main factors. In both trials, birds received six diets (24-LIP, 24-HIP, 26-LIP, 26-HIP, 28-L

Infectious blood source alters early foregut infection and regurgitative transmission of Yersinia pestis by rodent fleas.

Fleas can transmit Yersinia pestis by two mechanisms, early-phase transmission (EPT) and biofilm-dependent transmission (BDT). Transmission efficiency varies among flea species and the results from different studies have not always been consistent. One complicating variable is the species of rodent blood used for the infectious blood meal. To gain insight into the mechanism of EPT and the effect that host blood has on it, fleas were fed bacteremic mouse, rat, guinea pig, or gerbil blood; and the location and characteristics of the infection in the digestive tract and transmissibility of Y. pes
