Soil contamination impacts feedstock characteristics and drives pyrolysis outcomes in the conversion of polyethylene mulch films to fuel.

Recovered plastic mulch films (rMFs) are often burdened with soil contamination, limiting recycling options. While pyrolysis is a promising recycling technology, the effects of soil contamination on rMFs' properties and pyrolytic behavior remain poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of soil contamination on rMFs collected from Washington (WA), Nebraska (NE), Florida (FL), and California (CA). Proximate, elemental, and calorific analyses evaluated the influence of soil texture on rMFs' physicochemical properties, while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis-gas chroma

Combined effect of thermal hydrolysis process and low-temperature pyrolysis on the classification and bioavailability of phosphorus in sewage sludge.

Existing phosphorus (P) resources are becoming increasingly scarce, so it is necessary to recover P from potential sources. This paper is based on thermal hydrolysis process (THP) at 140-180 °C, coupled with low-temperature pyrolysis at 300 °C, to study its effect on the recovery and conversion of P from sewage sludge. Most significant change was observed in apatite P, which increased from 3.43 ± 0.48 mg/g in raw sludge to 30.17 ± 1.17 mg/g in biochar (BTHP-180-4-300) during optimal process (THP condition: 180 °C, 4 h; pyrolysis condition: 300 °C). Reactions between phosphates and metal ions b

New insights into the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the spectroscopy properties of dissolved organic matter in manure-based biochar.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from biochar takes a crucial role in transport and bioavailability toward contaminants; hence, it is undeniable that a thorough analysis of its properties is important. So far, the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the functional groups, components, and evolutionary sequence of manure-based biochar DOM has not been adequately investigated. Here, DOM was released from two typical livestock manures (cow and pig) at five pyrolysis temperatures (300 ~ 700°C), and it was explored in depth with the aid of moving window 2D correlation spectroscopy (MW-2D-COS) a

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on the binding characteristics of DOM derived from livestock manure biochar with Cu(II).

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) has the potential to influence the environmental application of biochar and the behavior of heavy metals. In this study, the binding properties of BDOM derived from livestock manure biochar at different pyrolysis temperatures with Cu(II) were investigated based on a multi-analytical approach. The results showed that the DOC concentration, aromatics, and humification degree of BDOM were higher in the process of low pyrolysis of biochar. The pyrolysis temperature changed the composition of BDOM functional groups, which affected the binding mechanis

Generation and characterization of bio-oil obtained from the slow pyrolysis of cooked food waste at various temperatures.

Bio-oil was generated from slow pyrolysis of cooked food waste (CFW) at various temperatures (300-500 °C). Then NMR analysis was used as a qualitative means to characterize the bio-oil for its nature (aliphatic or aromatic), and then the compounds were confirmed and quantified using the GC-MS. This analysis indicated that the pyrolysis at low temperature (300 °C) mainly generated carbonyl compounds (Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters, and Oxo groups), Levoglucosans, and Furans (17%, 24%, and 38%, respectively) considered as typical pyrolysis chemicals. Similarly, the pyrolysis at medium temperature (4

Effects of Copper(II) Oxide on the Co-Pyrolysis of Waste Polyester Enameled Wires and Poly(vinyl chloride).

The emission of chlorinated pollutants is one of the main problems when recovering copper (Cu) via pyrolysis from waste enameled wires. This is mainly attributed to other wastes which possess high poly(vinyl chloride) content, such as electrical wires and cables, which are often recycled together with enameled copper wires. In this research, to control the chlorinated pollutants, copper(II) oxide (CuO) was chosen and demonstrated to be an efficient dechlorinating agent, and CuO did not introduce any impurities that influence the quality of the recovered Cu. The pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis of po

The role of temperature profile during the pyrolysis of end-of-life-tyres in an industrially relevant conditions auger plant.

Pyrolysis is a chemical recycling process of interest as a means to achieve a sustainable circular economy for end-of-life tyres (ELTs). In the pyrolysis process, ELTs are converted into tyre pyrolysis gas (TPG), tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) and raw recovered carbon black (RRCB). This work investigates for the first time the effect of different temperature profiles by using a single-auger pyrolysis reactor in an industrially relevant scale (TRL-5). Since the development of this process at this representative scale is quite limited and the temperature profile has not been previously studied, the re

Effects of torrefaction on product distribution and quality of bio-oil from food waste pyrolysis in N2 and CO2.

Waste food utilization to produce bio-oil through pyrolysis has received increasing attention. The feedstock can be utilized more efficiently as its properties are upgraded. In this work, the mixed food waste (MFW) was pretreated via torrefaction at moderate temperatures (250-275 °C) under an inert atmosphere before fast pyrolysis. The pyrolysis of torrified MFW (T-MFW) was performed in a bubbling fluidized-bed reactor (FBR) to study the influence of torrefaction on the pyrolysis product distribution and bio-oil compositions. The highest liquid yield of 39.54 wt% was observed at a pyrolysis te

Effect of biochar-derived DOM on the interaction between Cu(II) and biochar prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures.

The structure and composition of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) at different pyrolysis temperatures differed significantly, affecting the environmental geochemical behavior of heavy metals (HMs). Herein, the binding properties of Cu(II) onto walnut-shell DOM were investigated using spectroscopic methods. The results showed that the DOM at low pyrolysis temperatures (300 °C and 500 °C) showed higher Cu(II) affinity than that at high pyrolysis temperature (700 °C). There was a preferential Cu(II) binding with fulvic-like substances (360 nm) at 300 °C, and with protein-like materi

Catalytic effect and mechanism of coexisting copper on conversion of organics during pyrolysis of waste printed circuit boards.

Pyrolysis is a promising technology for recycling organic materials from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs). Nevertheless, the generated organic bromides are toxic and urgently needed to be removed. The coexisting copper (Cu) of WPCBs has potential performance on debromination. However, the catalytic effect and mechanism of Cu on pyrolysis process and products were still unclear. To clarify the in-situ catalysis of Cu, the analysis on kinetics and pyrolysis products was performed. The results showed that Cu can change the mechanism function of pyrolysis, which reduced the apparent activation

Mitigation of bromine-containing products during pyrolysis of polycarbonate-based tetrabromobisphenol A in the presence of copper(I) oxide.

Polycarbonate (PC) is an engineering thermoplastic that is widely used in electrical and electronic equipment. This plastic often contains tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBA), the most common brominated flame retardant. Thermal degradation of the PC-TBBA leads to generation of numerous bromo-organic products in the pyrolytic oil, hindering its appropriate utilization, as well as corrosive hydrogen bromide gas. The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate and compare the pyrolysis products of PC-TBBA and PC-TBBA + Cu2O at various temperatures, with an emphasis on the yield and distribut

A novel magnetic biochar prepared by K2FeO4-promoted oxidative pyrolysis of pomelo peel for adsorption of hexavalent chromium.

Magnetic biochar was usually prepared using ferrous and ferric compounds as precursor of magnetic medium. Ferrate, which could be an internal oxidative modifier, was less explored for preparing magnetic biochar. Here, a magnetic biochar was prepared through K2FeO4-promoted pyrolysis of pomelo peel for adsorption of hexavalent chromium. Oxygen-containing groups and single phase ɤ-Fe2O3 were simultaneously introduced into biochar matrix at 300 °C. The magnetic biochar exhibited 209.64 mg/g maximum adsorption capability at 45 °C, outperformed the best magnetic biochar with 142.86 mg/g maximum ads

On-line mass spectrometric methods for the determination of the primary products of fast pyrolysis of carbohydrates and for their gas-phase manipulation.

Mass spectrometric methodology was developed for the determination and manipulation of the primary products of fast pyrolysis of carbohydrates. To determine the true primary pyrolysis products, a very fast heating pyroprobe was coupled to a linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer through a custom-built adaptor. A home-built flow tube that simulates pyrolysis reactor conditions was used to examine the secondary reactions of the primary products. Depending on the experiment, the pyrolysis products were either evaporated and quenched or allowed to react for a period of time. The quenched pro

Impact of several sludge dewatering conditioners on municipal sludge pyrolysis properties, kinetics, by-products, and environmental risk assessment.

The pyrolysis characteristics of four different types of conditioned sludge were ascertained, and PAM, CaO, K2FeO4, and K2FeO4-CaO-PAM (KCP) conditioners were employed as sludge dewatering conditioners. The sludge pyrolysis reaction's activation energy (E) dropped with the addition of four conditioners. CaO, PAM, KCP, and K2FeO4 were the sequences of E needed for the pyrolysis of four different types of conditioned sludge. The addition of K2FeO4, CaO, and KCP resulted in an increase in the yields of H2 and CO. Except for the K2FeO4 conditioning sludge carbon, the pyrolytic carbon of the other
