The evaluation of the reduction of radiation dose via deep learning-based reconstruction for cadaveric human lung CT images.

To compare the quality of CT images of the lung reconstructed using deep learning-based reconstruction (True Fidelity Image: TFI ™; GE Healthcare) to filtered back projection (FBP), and to determine the minimum tube current-time product in TFI without compromising image quality. Four cadaveric human lungs were scanned on CT at 120 kVp and different tube current-time products (10, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 175 mAs) and reconstructed with TFI and FBP. Two image evaluations were performed by three independent radiologists. In the first experiment, using the same tube current-time product, a side-by-si

Hessian-MRLoG: Hessian information and multi-scale reverse LoG filter for pulmonary nodule detection.

Computer-aided detection (CADe) of pulmonary nodules is an effective approach for early detection of lung cancer. However, due to the low contrast of lung computed tomography (CT) images, the interference of blood vessels and classifications, CADe has the problems of low detection rate and high false-positive rate (FPR). To solve these problems, a novel method using Hessian information and multi-scale reverse Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) (Hessian-MRLoG) is proposed and developed in this work. Also, since the intensity distribution of the LoG operator and the lung nodule in CT images are inconsi

Pleura detection in chest computed tomography with application for nodule detection.

This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for detecting pleural objects that come in contact with a nodule. To reduce complexity, the algorithm recursively performed a curve-fitting method on each slice of the volume of interest to locate the object between the parietal and visceral pleurae surfaces and measured the quality of the fitting curve. When a nodule contacted the surfaces of the chest wall or diaphragm, they were automatically separated using the fitting curve. The algorithm was performed on 864 slices of 40 nodules. The segmentation results were visually inspected by a consensus of

Curvature analysis of femoral shaft in total knee arthroplasty patient and control group.

For some patients with joint illnesses such as rheumarthritis or varus deformity, the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures are performed. However, when inserting metal cutting guide for the procedures, due to the femoral shaft bowing, complications such as the cortex of the femoral shaft damages or secondary fractures can be caused. If the central coordinate value of the femoral shaft is known, the metal cutting guide could be inserted into the anatomical center, so such complications can be prevented. In this study, CT images of femoral shafts of 10 individuals in the experiment group who

64-detector row computed tomography: an improved tool for evaluating the biliary and pancreatic ducts?

The imaging evaluation of patients with suspected pancreaticobiliary abnormality includes noninvasive imaging modalities such as sonography and MRI. The use of computed tomography (CT) has typically been limited to the evaluation and staging of malignancy affecting the pancreas and biliary tree. With the increasing use of CT in abdominal imaging for patients with a wide variety of indications, biliary and pancreatic abnormalities are being initially identified with increasing frequency on CT. The evolution of CT technology to multi-detector channel row (MDCT) scanners, currently culminating in

Impact of acquisition parameters in photon-counting computed tomography on the stability of virtual monoenergetic attenuation values and effective atomic number: a phantom study.

OBJECTIVE: Photon-counting CT (PCCT) can generate virtual monoenergetic images (VMI) and effective atomic number (Zeff), demonstrating considerable potential for tissue quantification. However, the influence of key acquisition parameters on the stability of these quantitative metrics has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of VMI CT numbers and Zeff in abdominal organs under varying tube voltage, image quality (IQ) level, and pitch. METHODS: An adult male anthropomorphic abdominal phantom (Kyoto Kagaku CTU-41) was scanned using PCCT. The reference protocol

Automated landmarking and labeling of fully and partially scanned spinal columns in CT images.

The spinal column is one of the most distinguishable structures in CT scans of the superior part of the human body. It is not necessary to segment the spinal column in order to use it as a frame of reference. It is sufficient to place landmarks and the appropriate anatomical labels at intervertebral disks and vertebrae. In this paper, we present an automated system for landmarking and labeling spinal columns in 3D CT datasets. We designed this framework with two goals in mind. First, we relaxed input data requirements found in the literature, and we label both full and partial spine scans. Sec

Diagnostic value of HRCT and 3DCT in the assessment of chronic maxillary sinusitis.

In a group of 37 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis in whom CT examination had been performed diagnostic value of secondary spatial reconstructions and high-resolution sections was analysed. It was found that the supplementation of standard CT examination with high-resolution sections and spatial pictures increases diagnostic possibilities in the assessment of maxillary sinusitis as for recognising, differentiating and determining anatomical etiologic factors.

Topology-oriented foreground focusing network for semi-supervised coronary artery segmentation.

Automatic coronary artery (CA) segmentation on coronary-computed tomography angiography (CCTA) images is critical for coronary-related disease diagnosis and pre-operative planning. However, such segmentation remains a challenging task due to the difficulty in maintaining the topological consistency of CA, interference from irrelevant tubular structures, and insufficient labeled data. In this study, we propose a novel semi-supervised topology-oriented foreground focusing network (TOFF-Net) to comprehensively address such challenges. Specifically, we first propose an explicit vascular connectivi

Annotation-efficient deep learning detection and measurement of mediastinal lymph nodes in CT.

PURPOSE: Manual detection and measurement of structures in volumetric scans is routine in clinical practice but is time-consuming and subject to observer variability. Automatic deep learning-based solutions are effective but require a large dataset of manual annotations by experts. We present a novel annotation-efficient semi-supervised deep learning method for automatic detection, segmentation, and measurement of the short axis length (SAL) of mediastinal lymph nodes (LNs) in contrast-enhanced CT (ceCT) scans. METHODS: Our semi-supervised method combines the precision of expert annotations w

Disease Quantification of Liver Lymphoma in CT Images without Lesion Segmentation.

AIM: This study aimed to automatically implement liver disease quantification (DQ) in lymphoma using CT images without lesion segmentation. BACKGROUND: Computed Tomography (CT) imaging manifestations of liver lymphoma include diffuse infiltration, blurred boundaries, vascular drift signs, and multiple lesions, making liver lymphoma segmentation extremely challenging. METHODS: The method includes two steps: liver recognition and liver disease quantification. We use the transfer learning technique to recognize the diseased livers automatically and delineate the livers manually using the CAVASS

Uncertainty Estimation for Dual View X-ray Mammographic Image Registration Using Deep Ensembles.

Techniques are developed for generating uncertainty estimates for convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods for registering the locations of lesions between the craniocaudal (CC) and mediolateral oblique (MLO) mammographic X-ray image views. Multi-view lesion correspondence is an important task that clinicians perform for characterizing lesions during routine mammographic exams. Automated registration tools can aid in this task, yet if the tools also provide confidence estimates, they can be of greater value to clinicians, especially in cases involving dense tissue where lesions may be
