Character displacement from the receiver's perspective: species and mate recognition despite convergent signals in suboscine birds.

Many social animals use long-distance signals to attract mates and defend territories. They face the twin challenges of discriminating between species to identify conspecific mates, and between individuals to recognize collaborators and competitors. It is therefore often assumed that long-distance signals are under strong selection for species-specificity and individual distinctiveness, and that this will drive character displacement when closely related species meet, particularly in noisy environments. However, the occurrence of signal stereotypy and convergence in rainforest species seems to

The influence of human settlements on the parasite community in two species of Peruvian tamarin.

Although there is a growing recognition that the transfer of diseases between humans and non-human primates can be of great significance for conservation biology, there have been only a few studies focusing on parasites. In this study, saddleback (Saguinus fuscicollis) and moustached tamarin (Saguinus mystax) from the rainforest of the Peruvian lowlands were used as models to determine helminth parasite associations between canopy-dwelling primate species and a nearby human settlement. The human population showed high prevalences of infestation with a number of nematodes, including Ascaris lum

Baggio-Yoshinari Syndrome: A Report of Five Cases.

Compared to classic Lyme disease (LD), Baggio-Yoshinari syndrome (BYS) has the following distinctive characteristics: it is transmitted in the Amazon area and Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South regions of Brazil by hard ticks, notably Amblyomma cajannense or Rhipicefalus sp. The absence of Ixodes sp. ticks in areas at risk of BYS in Brazil is probably the main reason for the disease's differences from LD in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Biodiversity and climate probably favor the formation of atypical pleomorphic Borrelias, which have not yet been cultivated or isolated. Clin

Inequitable access to Ebola vaccines and the resurgence of Ebola in Africa: A state of arts review.

The Ebola virus, a member of the filoviridae family of viruses, is responsible for causing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) with a case fatality rate as high as 50%. The largest EVD outbreak was recorded in West Africa from March 2013 to June 2016, leading to over 28 000 cases and 11 000 deaths. It affected several countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Until then, EVD was predominantly reported in remote villages in central and west Africa close to tropical rainforests. Human mobility, behavioral and cultural norms, the use of bushmeat, burial customs, preference f

Monkeypox virus: a re-emergent threat to humans.

Human monkeypox (MPX) is a rare zoonotic infection characterized by smallpox-like signs and symptoms. It is caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV), a double stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus Orthopoxvirus. MPX was first identified in 1970 and mostly prevailed in the rural rainforests of Central and West Africa in the past. Outside Africa, MPX was reported in the United Kingdom, the USA, Israel, and Singapore. In 2022, the resurgence of MPX in Europe and elsewhere posed a potential threat to humans. MPXV was transmitted by the animals-human or human-human pathway, and the symptoms of MPXV inf

Low antibody prevalence against Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, indicates high rate of lethal infections in wildlife.

Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva) is a member of the B. cereus group which carries both B. anthracis virulence plasmids, causes anthrax-like disease in various wildlife species and was described in several sub-Saharan African rainforests. Long-term monitoring of carcasses in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, revealed continuous wildlife mortality due to Bcbva in a broad range of mammalian species. While non-lethal anthrax infections in wildlife have been described for B. anthracis, nothing is known about the odds of survival following an anthrax infection caused by Bcbva. To address thi

A new family of bizarre durophagous carnivorous marsupials from Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland.

A new specimen of the bizarrely specialised Malleodectes mirabilis from middle Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area provides the first and only information about the molar dentition of this strange group of extinct marsupials. Apart from striking autapomorphies such as the enormous P3, other dental features such as stylar cusp D being larger than B suggest it belongs in the Order Dasyuromorphia. Phylogenetic analysis of 62 craniodental characters places Malleodectes within Dasyuromorphia albeit with weak support and without indication of specific relationships to any of the

Morphometric characteristics of the metacestode Echinococcus vogeli Rausch & Bernstein, 1972 in human infections from the northern region of Brazil.

Polycystic echinococcosis, caused by the larval stage (metacestode) of the small-sized tapeworm, Echinococcus vogeli, is an emerging parasitic zoonosis of great public health concern in the humid tropical rainforests of South and Central America. Because morphological and morphometric characteristics of the metacestode are not well known, hydatid cysts from the liver and the mesentery were examined from patients following surgical procedures. Whole mounts of protoscoleces with rostellar hooks were examined under light and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Measurements were made of both large

Using remote sensing to map the risk of human monkeypox virus in the Congo Basin.

Although the incidence of human monkeypox has greatly increased in Central Africa over the last decade, resources for surveillance remain extremely limited. We conducted a geospatial analysis using existing data to better inform future surveillance efforts. Using active surveillance data collected between 2005 and 2007, we identified locations in Sankuru district, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where there have been one or more cases of human monkeypox. To assess what taxa constitute the main reservoirs of monkeypox, we tested whether human cases were associated with (i) rope squirrels (Fu

Post-measles corneal ulceration in children in northern Nigeria: the role of vitamin A, malnutrition and measles.

This work was prompted by the observation that corneal ulceration was apparently more common in young children in the guinea savannah area of northern Nigeria than in children in the tropical rainforest areas of southern Nigeria, where the intake of vitamin A, as the provitamin in red palm oil, is higher. Since corneal ulceration was usually seen in association with measles, a study was carried out to clarify the relationship between nutritional status, measles infection and vitamin A status in young children. The concentration of total retinol was measured in the plasma of well-nourished and

Vertical stratification of sand fly diversity in relation to natural infections of Leishmania sp. and blood-meal sources in Jamari National Forest, Rondônia State, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Almost 1000 cases of American cutaneous leishmaniasis have been registered yearly in Rondônia State, Brazil. Little is known about the Leishmania transmission cycle (vectors and reservoirs) in the state. This study aimed to evaluate sand fly fauna from two vertical stratification layers in order to identify potential vectors and their blood-meal sources. METHODS: The study was conducted in Jamari National Forest. Sand flies were collected in the canopy (15 m) and at ground level (1 m) using HP light traps during four months, February, April, August and October, 2018. Insects were

Bacterial communities associated with anthracnose symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves of guarana, an endogenous tropical crop, and their pathogen antagonistic effects.

Plants are colonized by diverse microorganisms that can substantially impact their health and growth. Understanding bacterial diversity and the relationships between bacteria and phytopathogens may be key to finding effective biocontrol agents. We evaluated the bacterial community associated with anthracnose symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves of guarana, a typical tropical crop. Bacterial communities were assessed through culture-independent techniques based on extensive 16S rRNA sequencing, and cultured bacterial strains were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the growth of Colletotrichu

Risk factors for gastrointestinal parasite infections of dogs living around protected areas of the Atlantic Forest: implications for human and wildlife health.

Despite the ubiquity of domestic dogs, their role as zoonotic reservoirs and the large number of studies concerning parasites in urban dogs, rural areas in Brazil, especially those at the wildlife-domestic animal-human interface, have received little attention from scientists and public health managers. This paper reports a cross-sectional epidemiological survey of gastrointestinal parasites of rural dogs living in farms around Atlantic Forest fragments. Through standard parasitological methods (flotation and sedimentation), 13 parasite taxa (11 helminths and two protozoans) were found in fece

Two new species of Rhipidoglossum (Orchidaceae, Angraecinae) from Central Africa, probably pollinated by settling moths.

A revision of Central African specimens of Rhipidoglossum has revealed two new species from the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) and the lowland and peripheric forests of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest block. Rhipidoglossum acuminifolium sp. nov. is endemic to the CVL and is morphologically related to R. delepierreanum from the Western Rift Mountains. This disjunction may suggest historical connectivity or long-distance dispersal between these montane systems. Footage from Mount Cameroon recorded the settling moth Afroracotis cf. squalida (Lepidoptera, Erebidae) as a potential pollinator of R. ac

Infrared camouflage in leaf-sitting frogs: a cautionary tale on adaptive convergence.

Many cryptic green animals match leaves in invisible near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. This observation is an enduring puzzle because animals do not see NIR light, so NIR background matching is unlikely to contribute to visual camouflage. Two alternative explanations have been proposed-infrared camouflage (i.e. matching the temperature of the background) and thermoregulation-but neither hypothesis has been experimentally tested. To test these hypotheses, we developed bilayer coatings that mimicked the reflectivity of green leaf-sitting frogs with high NIR (HNIR) or low NIR (LNIR) reflectance. U

Chemical Composition, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Activities of Mezilaurus duckei (Lauraceae).

Mezilaurus duckei, a Brazilian endemic tree species found exclusively in the Amazon Rainforest, is primarily exploited for timber in construction. Due to its endangered status, this study aimed to investigate the chemical profile and biological properties of the ethanolic extract and its phases derived from M. duckei leaves. Chemical profiling using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry revealed flavonoids, including glycosylated kaempferol and its derivatives, as well as γ-butyrolactones, as the major constituents. Additional chromatographic separations led to the is

Mercury Contamination: A Growing Threat to Riverine and Urban Communities in the Brazilian Amazon.

In recent decades, widespread and uncontrolled use of mercury (Hg) in artisanal small-scale gold mining has released thousands of tons of mercury-contaminated waste in the Amazon biome, endangering the largest tropical rainforest worldwide. In this study, we assessed and compared blood Hg levels in individuals living in urban and riverine areas in the lower Tapajós basin and examined the association between Hg exposure and specific biochemical parameters. In total, 462 adults from eight riverine communities and one urban area were assessed. Overall, 75.6% of the participants exhibited Hg conce

Molecular detection of Mansonella mariae incriminates Simulium oyapockense as a potentially important bridge vector for Amazon-region zoonoses.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the emergent zoonotic disease risk posed by the voracious human-biting blackfly species Simulium oyapockense in the peripheral regions of an expanding urban centre situated deep in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. METHODS: We performed nine human landing catches at three periurban sites surrounding the Brazilian Amazon town of São Gabriel da Cachoeira. Using the detection of non-human primate filarial parasites as an indicator of the zoonotic disease threat posed by a biting insect, we screened 3328 S. oyapockense blackflies for the presence of zoonotic filarial DNA with

Peri-oral Monkeypox Virus Infection: A Clinical Report with Confirmatory Polymerase Chain Reaction Findings.

Mpox Virus (MPXV) is a zoonotic infectious disease first identified in 1970 in rural villages in rainforest areas of central and western Africa when smallpox was in the final stages of eradication. Since May 2022, cases and sustained transmission chains of monkeypox have been reported for the first time in countries where the disease is not endemic and without cases having direct or immediate epidemiological links to areas of West or Central Africa (travel, importation of mammals). On 23 July 2022, WHO declared monkeypox a "Public Emergency of International Concern" (PHEIC). In this paper, we
