The sensory basis of reading problems.

Learning to read is much more difficult than learning to speak. Most children teach themselves to speak with little or no difficulty. Yet a few years later when they come to learn to read they have to be taught how to do it; they do not pick up reading by themselves. This is because we speak in words and syllables, but we write in phonemes. Syllables do not naturally break down into the sounds of letters and letter units (i.e., phonemes) because these do not correspond to physiologically distinct articulatory gestures (Liberman, Shankweiler, & Studdert-Kennedy, 1967). Alphabetic writing was on

Not all reading disabilities are alike.

In this article, reading disability is defined broadly to refer to below-average achievement in reading comprehension as assessed by a standardized test. With our research we tried to answer the question of whether all children with reading disability share a common etiology of deficient phonology, or constitute heterogeneous groups. The answer to this question was sought in four studies that examined reading disabilities from the perspective of componential skills of reading. In Part 1, the results of the first study are reported. A principal-components analysis of the performance of 139 chil

[Reading-induced epilepsy: three new cases].

INTRODUCTION: Primary epilepsy of reading is a rare syndrome in which patients present with mandibular myoclonia when reading texts. Seizures are also frequently provoked by other stimuli. Occasionally they may be followed by generalized tonic-clonic seizures. CLINICAL CASES: We present the clinical features and electroencephalographs of three patients with epilepsy of reading, one of them also had seizures when playing chess and after doing arithmetic and the third after reading music. Treatment with valproic acid and clonazepam completely controlled the seizures in all three patients. In tw

Independent double reading of screening mammograms.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost effectiveness of independent double reading of screening mammograms. SETTING: Prospective study of 18,817 women undergoing first or repeat screening in a population based programme in the Florence district. METHODS: Mammograms were independently double read by experienced radiologists. Subjects with mammographic abnormalities reported by at least one reader were recalled for diagnostic assessment. The mean increase in recall rate, cancer detection rate, and screening costs attributable to double reading was calculated. RESULTS: Eleven of 125 cancers were dete

Reading strategies in partially sighted children.

We know very little about the reading strategies adopted by children with poor vision. Here a group of children with a range of visuo-perceptual problems including defective foveal vision and impaired eye-movements are compared to a group of fully sighted children (matched on age and verbal ability). Three studies using lexical decision tasks with words (regular and irregular) and non-words (legal, illegal and pseudohomophones) as well as with format distorted items, are reported. Regularity effects, as well as effects of intact and disrupted spelling units emerged but the predominant finding

Reading difficulty of MMPI-2 subscales.

Average reading difficulty based upon the Lexile value was computed for the 567 items and 61 sub/special scales of the MMPI-2. The mean for all items was 600.02 (SD = 304.57), which roughly corresponds to a fifth-grade reading level. Approximately 90% of the items require less than a ninth-grade reading level; 3 items require a high-school education or more. The Amorality (Mal) subscale had an average reading level greater than eighth grade. Nine subscales had 25% or more items above an eighth-grade reading level. The Hypomania (MA) subscales were the most demanding. For persons with low readi

Precursors of reading delay: neurodevelopmental milestones.

The relationship between current reading ability and the achievement of early language and motor developmental milestones was evaluated in 240 children, aged 7 1/2 years, whose language and motor achievement had been charted at each well baby visit during the first 2 years of life. Those children whose composite reading score was 6 months behind their chronologic age on the Woodcock-Johnson Psychoeducational Battery were classified as having reading delay. Relationships to reading outcome were assessed for individual infant milestones, for critical screening values, and by statistical techniqu

Unstable ocular dominance and reading ability.

An ocular anomaly, unstable ocular dominance, has been shown to be associated with poor reading performance in clinically selected subjects. A study is reported in which this anomaly was examined in a nonclinical sample. Two groups of children of similar reading performance and IQ but differing in chronological age were selected. The older children had a mean discrepancy between their reading and chronological age of 19 months. Unstable ocular dominance was more frequent in these poor readers. The hypothesis that this instability would lead to more errors and longer decision times for distingu

Reliability of contact-thermogram reading services.

Contact thermography has been advocated by some as a rapid, noninvasive diagnostic modality in evaluating patients at risk for breast cancer. In order to study the value of different criteria for interpreting thermograms, two sets of contact thermograms from 34 patients with benign breast disease were submitted to two different reading services. The results suggest that interrater agreement is enhanced when thermograms are classified as "normal" and "abnormal" rather than as class I-V.

From perceiving words to reading: Neural multivariate representations of sublexical vs. lexico-semantic processing during word-reading.

While the neural underpinnings of semantic cognition have been extensively studied, the brain mechanisms that allow the extraction of meaning from the initially perceptual visual linguistic input are less understood. These mechanisms have typically been explored through the analysis of psycholinguistic properties that reflect key aspects of semantic processing (e.g., word frequency, familiarity or concreteness), and more recently, through natural language processing (NLP) models. However, both approaches lack a direct comparison of sublexical (i.e., phonological and orthographic) and lexico-se

Cortical responses to letters and ambiguous speech vary with reading skills in dyslexic and typically reading children.

One of the proposed issues underlying reading difficulties in dyslexia is insufficiently automatized letter-speech sound associations. In the current fMRI experiment, we employ text-based recalibration to investigate letter-speech sound mappings in 8-10 year-old children with and without dyslexia. Here an ambiguous speech sound /a?a/ midway between /aba/ and /ada/ is combined with disambiguating "aba" or "ada" text causing a perceptual shift of the ambiguous /a?a/ sound towards the text (recalibration). This perceptual shift has been found to be reduced in adults but not in children with dysle

From word reading to multisentence comprehension: Improvements in brain activity in children with autism after reading intervention.

BACKGROUND: Children with ASD show a unique reading profile characterized by decoding abilities equivalent to verbal abilities, but with lower comprehension skills. Neuroimaging studies have found recruitment of regions primarily associated with visual processing (e.g., fusiform gyrus and medial parietal cortex), but reduced activation in frontal and temporal regions, when reading in adults with ASD. The purpose of this study was to assess neural changes associated with an intense reading intervention program in children with ASD using three fMRI tasks of reading. METHODS: 25 children with AS

Impact of Intensive Summer Reading Intervention for Children With Reading Disabilities and Difficulties in Early Elementary School.

Efficacy of an intensive reading intervention implemented during the nonacademic summer was evaluated in children with reading disabilities or difficulties (RD). Students (ages 6-9) were randomly assigned to receive Lindamood-Bell's Seeing Stars program ( n = 23) as an intervention or to a waiting-list control group ( n = 24). Analysis of pre- and posttesting revealed significant interactions in favor of the intervention group for untimed word and pseudoword reading, timed pseudoword reading, oral reading fluency, and symbol imagery. The interactions mostly reflected (a) significant declines i

Visual processing in reading disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and its contribution to basic reading ability.

Whether visual processing deficits are common in reading disorders (RD), and related to reading ability in general, has been debated for decades. The type of visual processing affected also is debated, although visual discrimination and short-term memory (STM) may be more commonly related to reading ability. Reading disorders are frequently comorbid with ADHD, and children with ADHD often have subclinical reading problems. Hence, children with ADHD were used as a comparison group in this study. ADHD and RD may be dissociated in terms of visual processing. Whereas RD may be associated with defi

Italian children with dyslexia are also poor in reading English words, but accurate in reading English pseudowords.

It has been argued that children with dyslexia (DC) are poor at learning a foreign language (L2) and, in particular, reading foreign words. This assumption is so general that an Italian law (law 170, October, 2010) has established that DC may be completely exempted from foreign language learning and, in any case, should not be engaged in tuition via written material. However, evidence of L2 difficulties of DC is scarce and, in particular, absent for Italian children learning English. This absence of data is problematic, as it precludes information on the pattern of weaknesses and strengths, wh
