During a prospective evaluation of malaria prophylaxis in pregnancy in a refugee population on the north-western border of Thailand from 1987 to 1990, an extremely high infant mortality rate (18%) was documented despite good access to health care. Infantile beri-beri was recognized as the main cause of death accounting for 40% of all infant mortality. Thereafter, severe vitamin B1 deficiency in infants was diagnosed and treated promptly. The impact of this was assessed prospectively from 1993 to 1996 in a second cohort study. The case fatality of infantile beri-beri fell from almost 100% to 7%

OBJECTIVE: To investigate an observed epidemic of gynecomastia among Haitian refugees in US detention centers in 1981 and 1982.
METHODS: All identifiable environmental exposures were investigated for estrogenic and antiandrogenic activity.
RESULTS: A high incidence of gynecomastia was observed among Haitian refugees in five detention centers in the United States. Of 284 men screened, 20 (from 18 to 53 years old) demonstrated new-onset gynecomastia (Tanner stages 2 to 5) in June 1982. The mean onset of gynecomastia was 130 +/- 12 days after arrival in the United States. Other symptoms include

OBJECTIVE: To describe screening for tuberculosis in a temporary centre for refugees, and contact investigation after a patient with open tuberculosis had been identified.
DESIGN: Descriptive.
SETTING: Regional Communal Health Centre Nijmegen.
METHOD: The refugees waiting for official status were housed on three cruise ships during the winter period November 1993 to April 1994. Ventilatory capacity was insufficient. The people had thorax radiograms after 10 days on average as a screening for tuberculosis. When abnormalities were found sputum was examined (Ziehl-Neelsen staining and culture)

INTRODUCTION: Children and Young People seeking asylum and refugees who are unaccompanied (CYPSAR-U) have a high risk of developing depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet culturally sensitive screening approaches remain limited. This evaluation explored the use of the Refugee Health Screener (RHS), focusing on patient outcomes and healthcare professionals' experiences of administration.
METHODS: A mixed-methods service evaluation was conducted in two London-based clinics. The demographics, language, interpreter use, and RHS scores were extracted from electronic he

Background There is growing evidence of associations between extreme weather events (EWE) and HIV vulnerabilities, yet this is understudied in humanitarian settings. We examined associations between EWE and HIV vulnerabilities among refugee youth in Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement, Uganda. Methods We collected baseline (February to March 2024) cohort data with refugee youth aged 16-24years in Bidi Bidi. We conducted linear and logistic regression to assess associations between (a) number of past-year EWE types (e.g. extreme rain/flooding, changes in expected rain patterns, drought, extreme heat,

OBJECTIVE: To report the first 6 months of experience of a nongovernmental-organization-managed obstetric care unit in a war refugee camp, with problems encountered and solutions implemented.

SETTING: GSF's maternity unit, in Zaatari camp (Jordan).
POPULATION: All pregnant women among Syrian refugees who came to the unit for delivery.

BACKGROUND: Population-based epidemiological research has established that refugees in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are at increased risk for a range of mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) problems. Improved knowledge of rates for MNS problems that are treated in refugee camp primary care settings is needed to identify service gaps and inform resource allocation. This study estimates contact coverage of MNS services in refugee camps by presenting rates of visits to camp primary care centers for treatment of MNS problems utilizing surveillance data from the Health Informatio

BACKGROUND: Exposure to potentially traumatic events and daily stressors in humanitarian settings puts refugees and asylum seekers (henceforth collectively referred to as refugees) at increased risk for mental disorders. Little is known about how mental disorder prevalence compares between refugees and national populations who live in the same settings and are exposed to many of the same daily challenges. We aimed to compare the proportions of refugees and Ugandan nationals screening positive for mental disorders in a Ugandan refugee settlement to inform targeted health interventions. Given di

Objectives: Although EU member states are obligated to take special account of the situation of particularly vulnerable refugees, appropriate and specific measures to detect affected asylum seekers are not yet available. This study tries to pave the way for the implementation of an adequate instrument which at the same time assesses these needs of suffering people whilst responding to the need for mental health assessments specifically designed for refugees. This was done by testing the implementation of a screening method (Refugee Health Screener RHS-15) for trauma related mental health probl

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify what existing literature has shown about possible cognitive alterations in unaccompanied refugee children.
DATA SOURCES: The search was performed in the Web of Science, PsycInfo, Scopus, and PubMed databases, including articles published in any year and in any language. The research was submitted to the Prospero protocol (ID: CRD42021257858), and the quality of the included articles was evaluated using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool.
DATA SYNTHESIS: Memory and attention are the main topics identified, largely because they are related to symptoms of po

In the spring of 2023, three Ukrainian war refugees from a municipal community shelter and a volunteer caregiver at an affiliated daycare center in Kiel, Germany, were diagnosed with infectious jaundice attributable to a single hepatitis A virus (HAV) subgenotype IA strain. Similar HAV sequences have been observed in Germany and other European countries for several years. One refugee and the volunteer required hospitalization. Four children were asymptomatically infected but excreted high levels of HAV ribonucleic acid in the stool. The infections were probably acquired in Germany, but a sourc

Migration is a growing phenomenon around the world, including within the African continent. Many migrants, especially African children, face challenges related to health and social inclusion and can face increased health risks. A systematic scoping review of available literature on the health of African migrant children across the globe was conducted to offer insight into these health risks. The review was conducted over a 15-month period from January 2019 to April 2020, yielding 6602 articles once duplicates were removed. This search included electronic databases, reference lists of articles

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a time of increased vulnerability for women. Women of refugee background may be further challenged in pregnancy due to a complex series of physical, psychological and social factors. Previous studies show ambiguous results, with some showing increased the risk of prenatal complications in refugees compared with their native counterparts, whereas other studies report the opposite. With the current steep rise in the number of refugees and displaced persons worldwide, research is important to understand whether pregnancy disparities between this population and their nat

During 2016 to 2019, cholera outbreaks were reported commonly to the Ministry of Health from refugee settlements. To further understand the risks cholera posed to refugees, a review of surveillance data on cholera in Uganda for the period 2016-2019 was carried out. During this 4-year period, there were seven such outbreaks with 1,495 cases and 30 deaths in five refugee settlements and one refugee reception center. Most deaths occurred early in the outbreak, often in the settlements or before arrival at a treatment center rather than after arrival at a treatment center. During the different yea

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis remains one of the top 10 major causes of global mortality, imposing social-economic and medical challenges in Malaysia. Refugees sheltered in Malaysia are a high-risk population but basic health checks upon their arrival, including tuberculosis screening, are not practised. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors of tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among refugee children in Malaysia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in three refugee schools in the Klang Valley, Malaysia, using tuberculin skin tests or interfer
