Psychological distress and well-being: their association with temporomandibular disorder symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the associations between temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms, psychological distress, and well-being. METHODS: A total of 372 university students were recruited and stratified into no TMD, TMD pain, TMJ sounds, and combined TMD groups. Psychological distress and well-being were assessed with the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and Scales of Psychological Well-being-18 (SPWB-18), respectively. Data were appraised with Kruskal-Wallis/Mann-Whitney U tests and logistic regression analysis (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Significant differences in

Mother-adolescent agreement regarding decision-making autonomy: a longitudinal comparison of families of adolescents with and without spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal comparison of mother and adolescent agreement regarding decision-making autonomy for adolescents with and without spina bifida (SB). METHODS: Forty-two mother-adolescent dyads of adolescents with SB and 55 comparison dyads reported on who was responsible for decision-making across five waves of data collection, beginning at age 8 or 9 years through age 16 or 17 years. RESULTS: The proportion of tasks that dyads agreed were decided by adolescents increased over time for both samples beginning at age 12 or 13 years, but appeared to be delayed by roughly two years for yo

Strategic Considerations for Video Consultation Implementation in General Practice: Qualitative Study of Organizational Interest-Holders' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Video consultations have become an established component of general practice and are increasingly promoted to improve access, efficiency, and health care sustainability. While previous research has primarily explored the perspectives of individual patients and health care professionals, less is known about how organizations involved in strategic video consultation implementation consider their benefits, challenges, and future role within health care systems. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the experiences of organizational interest-holders involved in implementing video cons

"It's nothing personal": understanding barriers to relational harm reduction practices during inpatient hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) have a higher incidence of infectious complications that require medical interventions only available in hospital settings. Hospitalizations for PWUD are also more likely to result in patient directed discharge (PDD) before completing medical treatment. Stigma directed at PWUD pressurizes and shapes clinical encounters, leading to poor communication between patient and provider. We explore how the relational philosophy of harm reduction - the premise that building relationships rooted in compassion and respect, as opposed to a transactional encounter - c

[The loss of human autonomy: utilization and imitative behaviors].

In 1981, when François Lhermitte described utilisation behaviour, his experience was based on 40 patients with bilateral frontal lesions and 5 cases of unilateral lesions. This behaviour was never observed in normal subjects or in patients whose lesions spared the frontal lobes. The description of imitation behaviour followed shortly after. In 1986, of the 125 patients studied, 40 presented an imitation behaviour without utilisation behaviour, 35 had both types of abnormal behaviour and 50 had neither. Continuing his study of patients presenting a frontal syndrome, Lhermitte showed that depend

[Regulated nursing autonomy and professional responsibility: prehospital emergency care as a paradigm of the legal evolution of the nursing profession].

UNLABELLED: . Regulated nursing autonomy and professional responsibility: prehospital emergency care as a paradigm of the legal evolution of the nursing profession. INTRODUCTION: The evolution of Italian nursing has expanded the competencies deployed in practice without fully defining the juridical configuration of advanced professional autonomy, especially in regulated organisational settings. OBJECTIVE: To propose regulated nursing autonomy as an interpretive category of professional action, using prehospital emergency care as the paradigm of a model in which nursing knowledge becomes lega

When help is not wanted: Frustrated needs and poor after-work recovery as consequences of unwanted help at work.

Instrumental help and support in the workplace are mostly associated with outcomes that are considered desirable for organisations and their employees. In this study, we seek to shed light on a specific type of help at work that may entail negative consequences: being offered help that is not wanted by the recipient. Drawing on basic psychological needs theory and on theory of ruminative thoughts, we propose that offering unwanted help frustrates the recipient's psychological needs for autonomy and competence, which in turn affects after-work recovery processes in the form of increased ruminat

A Longitudinal Study of Depressive Symptoms, Neuropsychological Functioning, and Medical Responsibility in Youth With Spina Bifida: Examining Direct and Mediating Pathways.

OBJECTIVE: Given the increased risk for cognitive deficits and development of depressive symptoms in youth with spina bifida (SB), this study aimed to examine two pathways through which depressive symptoms and neuropsychological dysfunction may be associated with medical autonomy in this population: (1) depressive symptoms as predictors of medical autonomy as mediated by attention/executive functioning (the cognitive scarring model), and (2) attention/executive functioning as predictors of medical autonomy as mediated by depressive symptoms (the cognitive vulnerability model). METHODS: Partic

Parenting and Anxiety: Bi-directional Relations in Young Children.

Developmental psychopathologists have long posited a reciprocal relation between parenting behaviors and the development of child anxiety symptoms. Yet, little empirical research has utilized a longitudinal design that would allow exploration of this bi-directional influence. The present study examined the reciprocal relations between parental respect for autonomy, parental hostility, and parental support, and the development of childhood anxiety during a critical developmental period-the transition from preschool to kindergarten and then first grade. Study participants included a community sa

The influence of policy on the differential expansion of male and female self-run recovery settings.

The present study used archival data to examine the differential growth among self-governed substance abuse recovery homes for men (N = 443) and women (N = 125). The number of these homes increased dramatically across the U.S. from 1988-1999 when state loan funds were made available to states and technical assistance was utilized by organizations developing the houses. State loan programs and the utilization of technical assistance, however, had the strongest impact on the expansion of women's houses compared to men's houses. The implications of these findings in relation to the scarcity of re

Beyond delinquency and drug use: Links of peer pressure to long-term adolescent psychosocial development.

This study examined the predictors and sequelae of exposure to peer pressure from close friends in adolescence. Adolescents (99 female; 85 male) were followed from age 13 to 24 utilizing peer, parent, and romantic partner reports and observational data. Participants who were exposed to high levels of peer pressure as teens were more likely to experience higher levels of coercive behavior from romantic partners (as reported by those partners), as well as lower levels of parent-reported functional independence. All findings held even after accounting for baseline levels of teen assertiveness. Ad

Recognition and Resistance as Dual Pathways in Self-Relevant Advertising: The Role of Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry.

This study examined how distinct dimensions of grandiose narcissism shape responses to self-relevant video advertising framed as either recognition/validation or status challenge. Drawing on the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Concept, we tested a dual-path process model in which two proximal mechanisms-perceived recognition and autonomy-related resistance (operationalized as perceived freedom threat and state reactance)-are associated with advertising-related outcomes. Community adults (N = 598) were randomly assigned to view one of two video advertisements and subsequently reported perce

Self-determination theory and food-related parenting: The Parent Socioemotional Context of Feeding Questionnaire.

There has been wide application of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to understanding motivation and regulation of eating and weight. Yet, there are no measures of the socioemotional-contextual family conditions in the eating domain, which are identified in SDT and should influence development of eating behavior in young children. Two studies were conducted to develop and validate a measure to assess the SDT socioemotional-contextual dimensions of food-related parenting. These dimensions were derived from extensions of SDT, which argue that autonomy support, warmth, and appropriate structure (as

Ethical issues in the care of adolescent and young adult oncology patients.

The diagnosis and treatment of cancer leads to short-term and long-term challenges for every patient. This is especially true for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer who strive to gain independence, autonomy, confidence, and social status while developing into adulthood. In this article, we review prominent ethical issues in AYA oncology that are related to autonomy, shared decision-making, care refusal or abandonment, end-of-life care, truth telling, and fertility preservation. Clinicians should recognize that AYA patients develop at their own pace; the onus lies with clinicians t

AWhen screams go unheard: covert violence, women victims, and social denial.

BACKGROUND: Covert violence-defined as a pattern of subtle, intentionally hidden, and socially camouflaged abusive behaviors that systematically erode a victim's reality, autonomy, and self-worth-remains a critically understudied dimension of gender-based violence. Distinct from overt psychological aggression, covert violence operates through tactics such as gaslighting, micro-invalidations, coercive control, and economic manipulation, often evading detection while inflicting profound harm. This scoping review systematically maps the evidence on its manifestations, psychosocial impacts, and th

"You like to be in control of your own destiny to a degree, don't you?": conscientious autonomy and planning for future care with dementia.

BACKGROUND: We explored people with dementia and their family carers' experiences of future care planning, guided by Kukla's model of conscientious autonomy. This relational autonomy concept focuses on the alignment of self-managed health-care practices with people's authentic goals and values. It involves people adopting recommended practices for their own authentic reasons, questioning them where necessary, and being supported by the health and care system to understand their rationale and implement them effectively. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 people recently diagno

Characteristics of therapeutic alliance in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and occupational therapy practice: a scoping review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Most conventional treatment for musculoskeletal conditions continue to show moderate effects, prompting calls for ways to increase effectiveness, including drawing from strategies used across other health conditions. Therapeutic alliance refers to the relational processes at play in treatment which can act in combination or independently of specific interventions. Current evidence guiding the use of therapeutic alliance in health care arises largely from psychotherapy and medicine literature. The objective of this review was to map out the available literature on therapeutic allian
