A novel non-adiabatic spin relaxation mechanism in molecular qubits.

The interaction of electronic spin and molecular vibrations mediated by spin-orbit coupling governs spin relaxation in molecular qubits. We derive an extended molecular spin Hamiltonian that includes both adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin-dependent interactions, and we implement the computation of its matrix elements using state-of-the-art density functional theory. The new molecular spin Hamiltonian contains a novel spin-vibrational orbit interaction with a non-adiabatic origin, together with the traditional molecular Zeeman and zero-field splitting interactions with an adiabatic origin. The s

(-)-Carvone Inhibits Oxytocin-induced Writhing Via Uterine Relaxation in Rodents.

(-)-Carvone, a ketone monoterpene, is the main component of essential oils from several medicinal plants and has been reported to have anti-arthriric, anticonvulsive, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and immunomodulatory effects. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the spasmolytic activity of (-)-carvone in rodent models. The isolated virgin rat uterus was mounted in an organ bath apparatus, and the relaxing effect of ( -)-carvone and its mechanism of action were evaluated in tonic contractions induced by carbachol, KCl, PGF2α, or oxytocin. The animal model of primary dysmen

Pneumatic Relaxation Oscillator with Passive Components for Continuous Toes Movement.

Continuous passive motion of the toes improves blood circulation and may help ankle injuries heal faster. Soft devices are more appropriate than rigid devices to accommodate a variety of foot shapes. Most conventional pneumatic soft robots are actuated cyclically by solenoid valves, which require large amounts of power for valves and controllers. In this paper, we introduce a pneumatic oscillator comprised only of passive elements. The device is implemented with a relaxation oscillator based on RC filters from pneumatic components and connected to an inflatable soft actuator. We measured the in

Inhibiting cardiac myeloperoxidase alleviates the relaxation defect in hypertrophic cardiomyocytes.

AIMS: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is characterized by cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and disarray, and myocardial stiffness due to interstitial fibrosis, which result in impaired left ventricular filling and diastolic dysfunction. The latter manifests as exercise intolerance, angina, and dyspnoea. There is currently no specific treatment for improving diastolic function in HCM. Here, we investigated whether myeloperoxidase (MPO) is expressed in cardiomyocytes and provides a novel therapeutic target for alleviating diastolic dysfunction in HCM. METHODS AND RESULTS: Human cardiomyocytes derive

Hydration and glycogen affect T1 relaxation times of liver tissue.

T1 mapping is a useful tool for the assessment of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease but still suffers from a large unexplained variance in healthy subjects. This study aims to characterize the potential effects of liver glycogen concentration and body hydration status on liver shortened modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (shMOLLI) T1 measurements. Eleven glycogen phantoms and 12 healthy volunteers (mean age: 31 years, three females) were scanned at 3 T using inversion recovery spin echo, multiple contrast spin echo (in phantoms), shMOLLI T1 mapping, multiple-echo spoiled grad

Contralateral Ventriculostomy for Intraoperative Brain Relaxation in Supratentorial Brain Tumors.

BACKGROUND: CSF drainage from the ventricular system is a popular and effective technique for intraoperative brain relaxation as it reduces ICP, enlarges extra-axial operative corridors, and slackens the brain increasing its tolerance for surgical manipulation. However, sometimes when the ventricular chambers distant from the site of pathology are tapped, there is a risk of neurological worsening due to paradoxical herniation of the brain, exemplified by the phenomenon of upward transtentorial herniation observed in posterior fossa tumors, consequent to a supratentorial ventriculostomy. Expect

Effects of contrast agents on relaxation properties of 31P metabolites.

PURPOSE: Phosphorous MR spectroscopy (31P-MRS) forms a powerful, non-invasive research tool to quantify the energetics of the heart in diverse patient populations. 31P-MRS is frequently applied alongside other radiological examinations, many of which use various contrast agents that shorten relaxation times of water in conventional proton MR, for a better characterisation of cardiac function, or following prior computed tomography (CT). It is, however, unknown whether these agents confound 31P-MRS signals, for example, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG). METHODS: In this work, we quantitatively

Curcumin Induces Endothelium-Dependent Relaxation by Activating Endothelial TRPV4 Channels.

It is well-known that curcumin, as a plant substance, has vascular protective effects. TRPV4 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 4) is a highly Ca2+-selective channel in vascular endothelium. In our study, fluorescent Ca2+ imaging in mesenteric arterial endothelial cells (MAECs) and overexpressed TRPV4 human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells showed that curcumin dose-dependently stimulated Ca2+ influx. Whole-cell patch clamp proved that curcumin stimulated the TRPV4-mediated currents in TRPV4-HEK293 cells. The TRPV4-specific blocker HC067047 markedly decreased the whole-cell current. Molecul

Activation of endothelial TrkB receptors induces relaxation of resistance arteries.

While brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was previously reported to induce relaxation of conduit artery, whether the BDNF/TrkB (tropomyosin-related kinase) pathway is involved in the tone control of resistance arteries is not known. This study investigated TrkB receptors levels/localization and the vasomotor effect of the TrkB receptor agonist LM22A-4 in isolated third-order mesenteric arteries from rats. Immunostaining revealed the presence of both full-length and truncated TrkB receptors, especially at the endothelial level. By using wire myography, LM22A-4 induced vascular relaxation

PDE1A inhibition elicits cGMP-dependent relaxation of rat mesenteric arteries.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: PDE1, a subfamily of cyclic nucleotide PDEs consisting of three isoforms, PDE1A, PDE1B and PDE1C, has been implicated in the regulation of vascular tone. The PDE1 isoform(s) responsible for tone regulation is unknown. This study used isoform-preferring PDE1 inhibitors, Lu AF58027, Lu AF64196, Lu AF66896 and Lu AF67897, to investigate the relative contribution of PDE1 isoforms to regulation of vascular tone. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: In rat mesenteric arteries, expression and localization of Pde1 isoforms were determined by quantitative PCR and in situ hybridization, and p

Chloride channels mediate sodium sulphide-induced relaxation in rat uteri.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hydrogen sulphide reduces uterine contractility and is of potential interest as a treatment for uterine disorders. The aim of this study was to explore the mechanism of sodium sulphide (Na2 S)-induced relaxation of rat uterus, investigate the importance of redox effects and ion channel-mediated mechanisms, and any interactions between these two mechanisms. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Organ bath studies were employed to assess the pharmacological effects of Na2 S in uterine strips by exposing them to Na2 S with or without Cl(-) channel blockers (DIDS, NFA, IAA-94, T16Ainh-A0

COPD Patients Have Short Lung Magnetic Resonance T1 Relaxation Time.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may provide attractive biomarkers for assessment of pulmonary disease in clinical trials as it is free from ionizing radiation, minimally invasive and allows regional information. The aim of this study was to characterize lung MRI T1 relaxation time as a biomarker of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); and specifically its relationship to smoking history, computed tomography (CT), and pulmonary function test (PFT) measurements in comparison to healthy age-matched controls. Lung T1 and inter-quartile range (IQR) of T1 maps from 24 COPD subjects and 12

UTE bi-component analysis of T2* relaxation in articular cartilage.

OBJECTIVES: To determine T2* relaxation in articular cartilage using ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging and bi-component analysis, with an emphasis on the deep radial and calcified cartilage. METHODS: Ten patellar samples were imaged using two-dimensional (2D) UTE and Car-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) sequences. UTE images were fitted with a bi-component model to calculate T2* and relative fractions. CPMG images were fitted with a single-component model to calculate T2. The high signal line above the subchondral bone was regarded as the deep radial and calcified cartilage. Depth and orientation

Prominent isovolumic relaxation flow in a patient with cardiac tamponade.

We present herein the case of a 72-year-old man who presented with orthopnea and was diagnosed with cardiac tamponade due to carcinomatous pericarditis. Pulsed Doppler echocardiogram showed prominent isovolumic relaxation flow (IVRF) directed from the cardiac base toward the apex. Such flow is rare in pericardial effusion and may be due to enhanced early diastolic untwisting, sphericalization of apex, and restriction of wall motion by epicardial fibrous tissue. We describe herein a rare case of prominent IVRF with interesting underlying mechanisms.

Intracervical application of hyaluronan improves cervical relaxation in the ewe.

Artificial insemination (AI) using frozen semen is a key method to enable rapid genetic improvement but its use in the sheep industry is currently limited by poor fertility. Laparoscropic AI is most effective but has not gained popularity due to cost and welfare considerations. Transcervical intrauterine AI (TCAI) may offer a practical alternative but the complex anatomy of the ovine cervix limits adequate penetration of the inseminating pipette. Hyaluronan (HA) is a glycoaminoglycan whose content in the cervix increases at oestrus and which may contribute to the degree of natural relaxation o

[Neurogenic communication disorders: how effective are relaxation therapy and acupuncture?].

Not only neurologists but also ENT-physicians and phoniatricians have to prescribe speech and language therapy for patients with communication disorders. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has gained increasing popularity among patients. Many studies have investigated these procedures and positive effects on certain physical e. g., chronic pain and anxiety disorders could be validated. Unfortunately only few empirical investigations have targeted the use of CAM to treat neurogenic disorders of communication or cognition. In this review we provide an overview over general therapeutica
