Changing Technology Use, Confidence, and Support Needs Among Older Adults in United Kingdom Retirement Villages: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Assistive technologies can support independent living among older adults, helping manage health and maintain independence, but uptake is often constrained by attitudes, confidence, and socioeconomic factors. The COVID-19 lockdowns accelerated technology use across all age groups, offering a natural experiment to examine changes in adoption. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine changing patterns of technology use in older adults, to provide insight as to how service providers can support the use of technology to enhance resident independence and well-being. METHODS: Two cross-se

From work-unit member to social individual: Retirement transition patterns, leisure reconfiguration, and depressive symptom trajectories in China.

The dissolution of China's work-unit system has reshaped retirement, but how transition patterns relate to long-term depressive symptom trajectories and whether leisure reconfiguration mediates this relationship remain unclear. To examine the longitudinal association between retirement transition patterns and depressive symptom trajectories in later life and the mediating role of leisure reconfiguration, data were collected from the Northeast China Aging and Lifestyle Survey (NCALS, N = 5217, age ≥ 60 years). Retirement transition patterns (gradual, abrupt, nonstandard) and leisure changes wer

Social isolation mediates association between depressive symptoms and cognitive function: Evidence from China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms and cognitive decline are common in older adults, but the direction of their relationship remains unclear. Social isolation is linked to both, and we hypothesized it mediates the connection between depressive symptoms and cognitive function. This study investigates whether social isolation mediates this relationship. METHODS: A total of 9220 participants aged ≥45 years were recruited from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale was used to assess the depressive symptoms. Social isolation was measured

Exploring the decision-making process of Chinese older adults transitioning to continuing care retirement communities: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: China's rapidly aging population and the limitations of traditional home-based care have prompted many older adults and their families to consider Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) as a comprehensive option. However, the decision-making process for this transition remains underexplored. This study aims to systematically explore how older adults navigate the decision to move to CCRCs, to guide service improvements and inform policy. METHODS: A qualitative research approach was employed, involving semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 older adults residing in a la

Nonlinear and threshold effects of built environment on older adults' walking duration: do age and retirement status matter?

INTRODUCTION: Walking plays a crucial role in promoting physical activity among older adults. Understanding how the built environment influences older adults' walking behavior is vital for promoting physical activity and healthy aging. Among voluminous literature investigating the environmental correlates of walking behaviors of older adults, few have focused on walking duration across different age groups and life stages, let alone examined the potential nonlinearities and thresholds of the built environment. METHODS: This study employs travel diary from Zhongshan, China and the gradient boo

Trajectory of intrinsic capacity among community-dwelling older adults in China: The China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUNDS: Intrinsic capacity (IC), the sum of individual mental and physical capabilities, as well as living environment and behavior, jointly determine the functional ability of older adults, shifting the focus from disease to function. At the population level, IC in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes, such as disability, falls, and death. At the individual level, IC changes dynamically. However, studies on the longitudinal IC trajectory and the factors influencing IC deterioration are limited. We aimed to analyze the IC trajectory and explore the risk factors for IC d

A reduced carbohydrate diet improves glycemic regulation in hyperglycemic older people in a retirement home: the SAGE study.

Poor glucose regulation associated with gradual insulin resistance is a significant risk factor in several age-related chronic diseases. An eating plan that promotes a lower carbohydrate intake may have a beneficial effect on glucose metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate how a diet reduced in carbohydrate by 32% (RCHO) over a 2 month period would influence the metabolic profile of older individuals (N = 24) living in a retirement home (RH). A continuous glucose monitor was used to measure blood glucose during four periods: the standard diet before (baseline) and after (washout) the interven

Blood Profiles of Community-Dwelling People with Sarcopenia: Analysis Based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: Routine blood factors can be economical and easily accessible candidates for sarcopenia screening and monitoring. The associations between sarcopenia and routine blood factors remain unclear. This study aimed to examine sarcopenia and blood factor associations based on a nation-wide cohort in China. METHODS: A total of 1,307 participants and 17 routine blood indices were selected from two waves (year 2011 and year 2015) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The diagnosis of sarcopenia was based on the criteria proposed by the Asian Working Group for Sar

Does Living Alone Affect Self-Perceptions of Aging? Findings From Two Waves of the Health and Retirement Study.

The current study examined if living alone is associated with self-perceptions of aging (SPA). The study used two-wave longitudinal data, sampled from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and collected in 2014 and 2018. In total, 6506 older adults aged 60-99 years at baseline were followed up with a 4-year lag. Results indicated that there was no significant change in SPA at follow-up regardless of changes in living arrangements. However, at follow-up, there was a significant cross-sectional difference in SPA between older adults who remained in partnership and those who transitioned to livi

High depression and anxiety in people with Alzheimer's disease living in retirement homes during the covid-19 crisis.

To cope with Covid-19 and limits its spread among residents, retirement homes have prohibited physical contact between residents and families and friend and, in some cases, even between residents or between residents and caregivers. We investigated the effects of measures against Covid-19 on the mental health of participants with Alzheimer's disease (AD) who live in retirement homes in France. We instructed on-site caregivers to assess depression and anxiety in participants with mild AD who live in retirement homes. Fifty-eight participants consented to participate in the study. The participan

Editorial Commentary: Should We Consider Early Retirement for Adolescent Pitchers and Catchers With Osteochonditis Dissecans of the Capitellum?

Repetitive throwing in the adolescent athlete often leads to long-term problems. Strict pitch counts and limitation of pitches (e.g., curve balls) that place extreme stress on the immature elbow must be monitored closely. And until our outcomes for osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum in adolescent baseball players improve, it may be wise to counsel those pitchers and catchers who are symptomatic to consider switching to another position or sport.

Particulate air pollution, ambulatory heart rate variability, and cardiac arrhythmia in retirement community residents with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) has been associated with future cardiac morbidity and mortality and is often used as a marker of altered cardiac autonomic balance in studies of health effects of airborne particulate matter. Fewer studies have evaluated associations between air pollutants and cardiac arrhythmia. OBJECTIVES: We examined relationships between cardiac arrhythmias, HRV, and exposures to airborne particulate matter. METHODS: We measured HRV and arrhythmia with ambulatory electrocardiograms in a cohort panel study for up to 235 hr per participant among 50 nonsmok

Multi-trait Polygenic Profiling and Survival Free of Dementia and Disability: Results from the Health and Retirement Study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a multi-trait polygenic profile for dementia is associated with dementia- and disability-free survival in middle-aged and older adults. BACKGROUND: Clinical trials of brain health and aging increasingly use holistic, patient-centered outcomes that capture overall health status. Survival free of dementia and disability is one such outcome. We hypothesized that adverse polygenic profiles for dementia would be associated with higher risk of dementia, disability, or death. DESIGN/METHODS: We conducted a genetic association study within the Health and Retirement St
