BACKGROUND: Radiosynoviorthesis (RSO) is a nuclear medical local treatment modality for inflammatory joint diseases. It is indicated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in joints with persistent synovitis despite adequate pharmacotherapy. Arthritis of the elbow joint occurs in up to 2/3 of patients with RA. Intra-articular radiotherapy using the beta emitter [186Re] rhenium sulfide leads to sclerosis of the inflamed synovial membrane with subsequent pain alleviation. The clinical efficacy in cubital arthritis, however, has so far only been described in small monocentric studies.

A radiosynovectomy (RS) should be indicated when recurrent articular bleeds related to chronic hemophilia synovitis (CHS) exist, established by clinical examination, and confirmed by imaging techniques that cannot be constrained with hematological prophylaxis. RS can be performed at any point in life, mainly in adolescents (>13−14 years) and adults. Intraarticular injection (IAI) of a radioactive material in children might be arduous since we need child collaboration which might include general anesthesia. Between 1970 and 1994, 116 chemical and 90 radioactive synovectomies were performed in 107 patients with severe haemophilia and two with type 3 von Willebrand's disease. BACKGROUND: Radiosynovectomy (RS) is known to be effective in the treatment of chronic haemophiliac synovitis. Its effectiveness may, however, be different when the joint treated shows articular degeneration in simple radiography (ADSR).
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness or otherwise of RS in the presence of ADSR. To this end, the objective improvement in five joint parameters (haemarthrosis, joint pain, range of motion, muscle strength and synovial size) has been analysed with respect to the pre-existence or otherwise of ADSR in the articulation treated.

RATIONALE: Advances in sulfur isotope measurement techniques have led to increased analytical precision. However, accurate measurement of 36S remains a challenge. This difficulty arises primarily from unresolved isobaric interferences of 36SF5 + at m/z = 131 u, 186WF4 2+ and 12C3F5 +, which lead to scale compression. BACKGROUND: Radiosynovectomy (RS) can reduce the number of hemarthroses in chronic hemophilic synovitis. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the effectiveness of RS in terms of the objective improvement of ten articular parameters.
METHODS: One-hundred and fifty-six radiosynovectomies were performed in 104 joints of 78 hemophiliacs diagnosed with chronic synovitis. The mean patient age was 18 years. The RS was carried out with either yttrium-90 or rhenium-186 (1-3 injections with a 6-month interval between them).

Radioisotope synovectomy (RS) is defined as the intra-articular injection of radioisotopic agents with the aim of fibrosis on hypertrophic synovium in the target joint.
