Causal association of leisure sedentary behavior and cervical spondylosis, sciatica, intervertebral disk disorders, and low back pain: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Some studies suggest sedentary behavior is a risk factor for musculoskeletal disorders. This study aimed to investigate the potential causal association between leisure sedentary behavior (LSB) (including television (TV) viewing, computer use, and driving) and the incidence of sciatica, intervertebral disk degeneration (IVDD), low back pain (LBP), and cervical spondylosis (CS). METHODS: We obtained the data of LSB, CS, IVDD, LBP, sciatica and proposed mediators from the gene-wide association studies (GWAS). The causal effects were examined by Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) test,

Association of Parkinson's disease status with accelerometer-derived physical activity and sedentary behavior in older women: The Women's Health Study (WHS).

Evidence suggests that individuals diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (PD) spend less time in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) compared to those without PD. However, prior studies primarily included men and did not consider movement across the entire intensity spectrum. To address these gaps, the association of PD status with total volume physical activity and time spent in sedentary, low light-intensity physical activity (LLPA), high light-intensity physical activity (HLPA), and MVPA among older women was examined. This is a cross-sectional analysis of 17,466 ambulatory

Patterns of physical activity and sedentary behavior in child and adolescent cancer survivors assessed using wrist accelerometry: A cluster analysis approach.

Physical activity levels among childhood cancer survivors are typically quantified as a total amount using time spent in various intensities. Yet, most analyses do not consider the transitory nature of children's behaviors and a more detailed approach could provide complimentary information. We aimed to explore various behavior profiles of survivors' daily and hourly physical activity patterns. We measured 8-18-year-old survivors' activity levels over 7 days using wrist accelerometry and cluster analysis. Of the 37 participant datasets, survivors engaged in mean (SD) 36.3 (19.0) min/day of MVP

Impact of Social Isolation on Physical Activity and Factors Associated With Sedentary Behavior in Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The objective was to analyze the impact of social isolation on moderate physical activity and factors associated with sedentary behavior of older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a cross-sectional study involving 111 older adults (aged 71.0 ± 6.87 years). The data were collected at two time points: in November 2019 and in June 2020. There was a decline in moderate physical activity when the minutes/week were compared before and during social isolation (p < .001). Sedentary behavior was associated with the condition of living alone. Older adults who lived alone were 3.29 times more

The Effect of Exercise-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation on Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Objective: Adequate physical activity following cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is required to reduce secondary cardiovascular disease risk. The aim of this review and meta-analysis was to determine the effect of exercise-based CR on objectively measured physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) comparing pre- to postintervention, pre- to postchange compared to a control group, and in a longer term follow-up. Methods: Five databases were searched (PubMed, MEDLINE [OVID], Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and CINAHL) from inception to January 2019. Two reviewers screened and selected 15 studies involvi

Patterns of Objectively and Self-Reported Sedentary Behavior in Children and Adolescents Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus: The PositHIVe Health Study.

PURPOSE: Sedentary behavior (SB) has been shown to be associated with unhealthy outcomes in children, and it is not clear whether children living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) engage in different patterns of SB compared with healthy children. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare patterns of SB between children living with HIV and a healthy control group. METHODS: A group of children with HIV and a paired control group wore accelerometers for 1 week and answered a questionnaire with items related to television viewing habits and computer usage. Multicomponent Behavior Change Technique Intervention for Caregivers of People With Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias: Protocol for a Single-Arm, Personalized Behavioral Trial to Disrupt Sedentary Time.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior is associated with negative health outcomes. High levels of sedentary behavior are common among Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) caregivers already at risk of other adverse health effects, yet few interventions target sedentary behavior within this population. There is a need for trials intended to reduce time spent sedentary, which may be achievable by increasing the frequency of disruptions to sedentary time. Remotely delivered behavior change techniques (BCTs) may be effective for disrupting sedentary behavior in this population through short bur

Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity, and Sleep During Pregnancy and Offspring Health: Protocol for the Pregnancy 24/7 Offspring Multi-Site Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a major public health concern that increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease theory posits that obesity and CVD risk is, in part, programmed in utero. A greater understanding of modifiable maternal factors that associate with offspring obesity and CVD risk in childhood could inform primordial prevention interventions during pregnancy. Maternal sedentary behavior, physical activity, and sleep during pregnancy are modifiable and plausible determinants of offspring obesity and CVD risk yet remain insufficiently st

Effects of the Fit2Thrive technology-supported physical activity promotion intervention components on sedentary behavior and light physical activity in breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Less sedentary time (ST) and more light physical activity (LPA) are associated with improved health outcomes among breast cancer survivors. However, less is known about whether interventions designed to increase moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) also influence time spent sedentary and in LPA. This study explored the overall and component-specific effects of the Fit2Thrive technology-supported MVPA intervention on ST and LPA in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Physically inactive breast cancer survivors (n = 269; Mage = 52.5; SD = 9.9) received a core intervention (Fitbit

Distinct gut microbiome signatures associated with sedentary behavior improvement following rehabilitation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with higher functional exercise capacity.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with reduced functional exercise capacity and increased sedentary behavior, both of which worsen prognosis. Although rehabilitation is a standard intervention, its impact on physical activity and gut microbiota remains incompletely understood. The present study enrolled 37 stable COPD patients and based on 6-min walk distance (6MWD), patients were classified into higher and lower functional exercise capacity. Physical activity was monitored using a tri-axial accelerometer, and gut microbiome composition was analyzed via 16S rRNA sequen
