Weaving meaning? An exploration of the interplay between lay and professional understandings of cervical cancer risk.

In line with the increasing emphasis on informed choice, women invited for cervical cancer screening in England receive a leaflet containing information on the risk factors and causation of the condition. However, data from a qualitative interview study with 35 women suggest that the ways in which women make sense of this information can vary and frequently do not correspond to the causal pathways and explanations which characterise contemporary professional medical explanations. This paper examines the complex interplay between lay and professional understandings that takes place as women att

The contribution of cutaneous thermal signals to bodily self-awareness.

Thermosensory signals may contribute to the sense of body ownership, but their role remains highly debated. We test this assumption within the framework of pathological body ownership, hypothesising that skin temperature and thermoception differ between right-hemisphere stroke patients with and without Disturbed Sensation of Ownership (DSO) for the contralesional plegic upper limb. Patients with DSO exhibit lower basal hand temperatures bilaterally and impaired perception of cold and warm stimuli. Lesion mapping reveals associations in the right Rolandic Operculum and Insula, with these region

Sensing the Self: The Role of the Insula and Interoception in Body Image.

This chapter explores the insula's role in shaping body image through interoception - the neural process of sensing, interpreting, and integrating internal bodily signals to facilitate a coherent sense of self. Drawing on A.D. (Bud) Craig's hierarchical model, which emphasizes the insula's integration of sensory input into higher-order self-representations, we examine how disruptions in interoceptive processing may contribute to body image disturbance. This framework is applied to mental health conditions such as anorexia nervosa, body dysmorphic disorder, as well as physical health conditions

[Resilience, coherence and stress in families of children with intellectual disabilities].

This study addresses factors accounting for resilience in the face of adversity and ongoing stress in families of children with intellectual disabilities. 327 families were examined. Measures of family sense of coherence (FSOC), family functioning, stress and coping behaviors were administered. Additionally, measures of the children's level of practical, cognitive and social competencies, as well as problem behaviors were applied. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationship between FSOC, family functioning and children's competencies on the one side and parental stress on

Two sides to the caregiving story.

PURPOSE: This descriptive study examined problems and successes that a sample of 73 adult caregivers new to the role expressed in the first year of caring for stroke survivors. Data were collected from May 2002 to December 2005. METHOD: Bimonthly, trained telephone interviewers asked the participants open-ended questions to elicit their experience in caregiving. Guided by Friedemann's framework of systemic organization, we analyzed the data using Colaizzi's method of content analysis. RESULTS: There were 2,455 problems and 2,687 successes reported. Three themes emerged from the problems: bei

Optically Addressable Spins in a Metal-Organic Framework.

Molecular spins supporting optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) offer unique opportunities for quantum sensing and many-body physics by combining the sensitivity and spatial resolution offered by optical spin detection with the capacity for bottom-up assembly and chemical control. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising architecture to leverage such opportunities since they offer control over spin placement, tunable porosity and large internal surface areas for efficient integration with sensing targets, and a richly tunable chemical space. However, optical spin readout has not

Distinct Charge Transport and its Regulation in Single-Molecule and Monolayer Junctions.

As electronic devices miniaturize to the nanometer scale, molecular junctions, including single and monolayer molecules, are gaining attention for applications in logic, storage, and sensing. However, comparative studies of charge transport in these two junction types are limited. Here, a highly conjugated pyrene derivative has been engineered to construct both single-molecule and monolayer junctions. The charge transport within these junctions has been examined systematically through theoretical simulations and electrical measurements. These studies demonstrate a distinct transition in a sing

Ultrasensitive Tunable Terahertz Sensor via Critical Coupling-Enhanced Fano Resonance.

High-performance terahertz (THz) sensing holds significant promise for label-free medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring, owing to unique fingerprint spectra of biomolecules. However, THz sensing technology still faces limitations, including low sensitivity, low quality factor (Q-factor), restricted figure of merit (FOM), and nontunability. Here, we propose a cavity-enhanced scheme for an ultrasensitive tunable THz sensor, integrating a graphene-strip metasurface, a microcavity with dielectric analytes, and a gold reflective layer. We reveal a new physical mechanism allowing tunable

Coherence of Representations Regarding the Child, Resolution of the Child's Diagnosis and Emotional Availability: A Study of Arab-Israeli Mothers of Children with ASD.

This study examined the interplay of mothers' coherent representations of their child (i.e., multidimensional and balanced view); resolution of the child's ASD diagnosis (i.e., acceptance); and emotional availability to the child in the unique cultural context of Arab-Israeli families. Participants were 46 mothers and their 2-8 year old sons. Coherent representations and resolution of the diagnosis were assessed using narrative measures. Emotional availability (namely, sensitivity, structuring, and lack of intrusiveness and hostility) was observed during mother-child play interactions. Results

Towards trustworthy AI-driven cuffless blood pressure monitoring.

Cuffless blood pressure monitoring is becoming increasingly feasible with the rise of wearable technologies, offering significant promise for preventive cardiovascular care. Yet diverse sensing modalities and modeling strategies have produced fragmented evidence that is difficult to compare. In this systematic review, we introduce a unified multi-axis taxonomy that relates surrogate signals, modeling paradigms, and calibration strategies, providing a coherent structure for the field. Building on this foundation, we analysed current approaches across physiological and wearable sensing and evalu

Remote photonic sensing of cerebral hemodynamic changes via temporal spatial analysis of acoustic vibrations.

A novel photonic method for remote monitoring of task-related hemodynamic changes in human brain activation is presented. Physiological processes associated with neural activity, such as nano-vibrations due to blood flow and tissue oxygenation in the brain, are detected by remote sensing of nano-acoustic vibrations using temporal spatial analysis of defocused self-interference random patterns. Temporal nanometric changes of the speckle pattern due to visual task-induced hemodynamic responses were tracked by this method. Reversing visual checkerboard stimulation alternated with rest epochs, and

Living well with chronic pain: a classical grounded theory.

Purpose: There is little theory to explain how and why some people cope well despite chronic pain. This study proposes a mid-level theoretical explanation for those that cope well, shedding light on factors relevant to acceptance.Method: Classical grounded theory methodology was closely followed to generate a theory grounded in data obtained from community-dwelling people self-identified as living well despite chronic pain. Results: The main concern of people experiencing chronic pain is resolving the problem of disrupted self-coherence. Resolution involves re-occupying self by (1) making sense

An app for supporting older people receiving home care - usage, aspects of health and health literacy: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: During the last decade, there has been an increase in studies describing use of mHealth, using smartphones with apps, in the healthcare system by a variety of populations. Despite this, few interventions including apps are targeting older people receiving home care. Developing mobile technology to its full potential of being interactive in real time remains a challenge. The current study is part of a larger project for identifying and managing health concerns via an app by using real-time data. The aim of the study was to describe older people's usage of an app and to evaluate the

Validation of the German version of the state mindfulness scale for physical activity in a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness has been studied as a treatment option for a large range of psychological disorders and is associated with a multitude of positive psychological outcomes. There are now several scales for measuring mindfulness as both a trait and a state. As mindfulness potentially plays a critical role in maintaining physical activity habits, the State Mindfulness Scale for Physical Activity (SMS-PA) was developed to specifically measure mindfulness in a physical activity context. This study aimed to provide validity evidence for a German version of the SMS-PA (henceforth called SMS-PA

Update in understanding common variable immunodeficiency disorders (CVIDs) and the management of patients with these conditions.

The common variable immunodeficiency disorders are a mixed group of heterogeneous conditions linked by lack of immunoglobulin production and primary antibody failure. This variability results in difficulty in making coherent sense of either immunopathogenesis or the role of various genetic abnormalities reported in the literature. The recent attempt to collate the varied complications in these conditions and to define particular clinical phenotypes has improved our understanding of these diseases. Once refined and confirmed by other studies, these definitions will facilitate improved accuracy
