Six weeks of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with resistance training improves motor learning in healthy young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and resistance training are widely reported to modulate neuroplasticity. However, their combined effects on motor learning remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 3 and 6 weeks of tDCS combined with lower-limb resistance training on motor learning in healthy young adults, as well as the persistence of any observed benefits. METHODS: Fifty-two healthy young adult males were randomly assigned to one of four groups: (1) tDCS combined with resistance training, (2) sham tDCS combined with resistance training, (3) tDCS

Neural basis of temporal context memory: a functional MRI study.

Temporal context information is crucial to understanding human episodic memory. Human lesion and neuroimaging data indicate that prefrontal regions are important for retrieving temporal context memory, although the exact nature of their involvement is still unclear. We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to elucidate the neural basis of two kinds of temporal context memory: the temporal order of items between lists and within a list. On the day of the fMRI experiment, subjects memorized a list of 30 pictures in the morning and another list of 30 pictures in the afternoon. Dur

Topographical changes in alpha power in medicated and unmedicated schizophrenics during digits span reverse matching test.

The topographical distribution of alpha power reduction was compared in nine unmedicated schizophrenics (predominantly never-treated), 17 medicated schizophrenics, and 15 normal controls. The task involved four procedures: (1) listening to signal sound, (2) listening to digits for memorization, (3) after listening, and (4) listening to digits for recognition. The electroencephalograms (EEGs) during each procedure were analyzed with Fast Fourier Transformation and compared with EEGs at rest. While listening to the digits, medicated schizophrenics showed less alpha power reduction than normal co

Neuroplastic and motor behavioral changes after intermanual transfer training of non-dominant hand: A prospective fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Intermanual transfer of learning is an important movement basis for a keyboard and instrument playing movement. However, the issue of where neural plastic mechanism occurs in the brain after intermanual transfer training remains both controversial and unresolved. OBJECTIVE: The aim of present study is to investigate the neuroplastic mechanism associated with the interlimb transfer learning from non-dominant hand to dominant hand. METHODS: Twenty healthy right-handed adults were classified into either the control group (no-training) or the experimental group (training serial butto

Poor frequency discrimination is related to oral language disorder in children: a psychoacoustic study.

Some children have difficulty in perceiving differences between sounds, even though they have normal hearing sensitivity, and it has been suggested that such problems could lead to difficulties in language and literacy development. Poor ability to distinguish sounds on the basis of frequency (perceived as pitch) has been described in poor readers on a variety of auditory processing tasks. The aim of the present study was three-fold: to determine whether children with specific language impairment (SLI) have difficulty discriminating frequency, whether this deficit is specific to the frequency d

Acquisition and consolidation of implicit motor learning with physical and mental practice across multiple days of anodal tDCS.

BACKGROUND: Acquisition and consolidation of a new motor skill occurs gradually over long time span. Motor imagery (MI) and brain stimulation have been showed as beneficial approaches that boost motor learning, but little is known about the extent of their combined effects. OBJECTIVE: Here, we aimed to investigate, for the first time, whether delivering multiple sessions of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over primary motor cortex during physical and MI practice might improve implicit motor sequence learning in a young population. METHODS: Participants practiced a serial react

Effects of High-Definition and Conventional Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation on Motor Learning in Children.

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve motor learning in children. High-definition approaches (HD-tDCS) have not been examined in children. Objectives/Hypothesis: We hypothesized that primary motor cortex HD-tDCS would enhance motor learning but be inferior to tDCS in children. Methods: Twenty-four children were recruited for a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blinded interventional trial (NCT03193580, clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03193580) to receive (1) right hemisphere (contralateral) primary motor cortex (M1) 1 mA anodal conventional 1 × 1 tDCS (tDCS),

Sustained attention deficit in bipolar disorder is not a working memory impairment in disguise.

Euthymic patients with bipolar disorder have been reported to show persistent deficits in sustained attention. However, the sustained attention task which was used also placed demands on working memory. Bipolar disorder patients in the euthymic state were therefore compared with healthy controls on two measures of sustained attention with and without a working memory component. Signal detection methodology was applied to the results. Euthymic patients with bipolar disorder were particularly impaired at detecting targets in the sustained attention task without a working memory component. This d

The consequences of reduced memory span for the comprehension of semantic versus syntactic information.

Aphasic patients with restricted memory spans were assessed on their comprehension of syntactically simple sentences varying in numbers of content words and on their comprehension of sentences matched in content words but varying in syntactic complexity. Three different presentation modes were used: unlimited visual presentation, limited visual presentation, and auditory presentation. The difference between performance in the unlimited and limited modes was used as a measure of the extent to which memory decrements caused comprehension failure. These difference scores were related to memory sp

An associational model of birdsong sensorimotor learning II. Temporal hierarchies and the learning of song sequence.

Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying serially ordered behavior is a fundamental problem in motor learning. We present a computational model of sensorimotor learning in songbirds that is constrained by the known functional anatomy of the song circuit. The model subsumes our companion model for learning individual song "syllables" and relies on the same underlying assumptions. The extended model addresses the problem of learning to produce syllables in the correct sequence. Central to our approach is the hypothesis that the Anterior Forebrain Pathway (AFP) produces signals related to t

The elusive nature of forward blocking effect on running-based taste aversion learning in laboratory rats.

It is well documented that rats learn to avoid a taste solution consumed immediately before voluntary running in activity wheels, which represents a form of Pavlovian aversive conditioning based on the taste-running association. Although various behavioral phenomena observed in typical Pavlovian preparations, such as fear conditioning, have also been demonstrated in this setup, evidence of the associative blocking effect is limited. The present study aimed to demonstrate this effect, and the first experiment provided some positive evidence. Conditioning rats with serial presentations of two ta

Young School-Aged Children Are Sensitive to Simple and Complex Sequential Patterns in a Modified Serial Reaction Time Task.

The goal of this work is to determine how young children acquire domain-general sequential patterns that we hypothesize underlie language learning. Participants included 26 typically developing children, aged 5.0 to 8.9 (years.months; 12 female). Six participants (23%) identified as Hispanic (White: n = 4; Multiracial: n = 1; Unspecified: n = 1). Twenty participants identified as Not Hispanic (White: n = 16; Black/African American: n = 1; Multiracial; n = 3). A modified serial reaction time task assessed children's abilities to learn sequences that share key elements with either Word segmentat

Posterior parietal cortex is critical for the encoding, consolidation, and retrieval of a memory that guides attention for learning.

Within most contemporary learning theories, reinforcement prediction error, the difference between the obtained and expected reinforcer value, critically influences associative learning. In some theories, this prediction error determines the momentary effectiveness of the reinforcer itself, such that the same physical event produces more learning when its presentation is surprising than when it is expected. In other theories, prediction error enhances attention to potential cues for that reinforcer by adjusting cue-specific associability parameters, biasing the processing of those stimuli so t

Modulation of interhemispheric inhibition and motor learning by different intensities of bilateral transcranial direct current stimulation in healthy adults.

Interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) plays a crucial role in performing unilateral hand movements. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to modulate IHI and enhance motor learning, but the most effective stimulation intensity remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate how different intensities (1.0 mA, 1.5 mA, 2.0 mA, and sham) of bilateral tDCS affect IHI and motor learning in healthy adults. Twenty right-handed participants completed four randomized sessions, each involving bilateral tDCS application while performing a serial reaction time task. Resting-state ele

Retrieval Practice Enhances Lexico-Semantic Representations and Facilitates Word Identification During the Attentional Blink: Evidence from L3 French Compound Word Learning.

The present study investigated whether retrieval practice facilitates memory retention and the rapid identification of newly learned French word components under attentional blink (AB) conditions. Specifically, a total of 107 native Chinese speakers participated in the study, and 103 were included in the final analyses after exclusions. In Experiment 1, participants studied novel, semantically opaque French compound words under two learning conditions: retrieval practice and repeated study. Experiment 2 was conducted 15 min after the completion of Experiment 1. Participants performed a two-tar

The utilisation of operant delayed matching and non-matching to position for probing cognitive flexibility and working memory in mouse models of Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Operant behavioural testing provides a highly sensitive and automated method of exploring the behavioural deficits seen in rodent models of neurodegenerative diseases, including Huntington's disease (HD). The delayed matching to position (DMTP) and delayed non-matching to position (DNMTP) tasks probe spatial learning and working memory and when applied serially they can be used to measure reversal learning, which has been shown to be an early symptom of executive dysfunction in HD. NEW METHOD: The DMTP and DNMTP tasks were conducted in two configurations of operant apparatus; the

Serial lumbar dynamometry in low back pain.

To determine the significance of changes in motor performance as measured by lumbar dynamometry, serial lumbar dynamometry was performed on a group of 45 male Workers' Compensation patients with chronic "mechanical" low back pain and in a group of 20 healthy male volunteers. The patients were men aged 20-60 years, whose current episode of low back pain had lasted for at least 3 months (mean 19.5 weeks, range 12-47 weeks). Testing was performed at entry into a "back school" program of therapy and again 2 weeks and 4 weeks later. The control group showed a slight improvement in almost all variab

The Dynamic Interaction between Procedural Learning and Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Self-Limited Focal Epilepsies.

The functional brain networks related to procedural learning (PL) have never been explored in children with self-limited focal epilepsies of childhood (SeLFE), despite their role in the development of various sequence-related sensorimotor, language, and cognitive abilities that are impaired in this clinical population. Our study fills this gap by investigating PL and its interaction with the rapid reorganisation of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in SeLFE. A serial reaction time task, preceded and followed by resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings, was used to asses

Longitudinal study of cognition among adolescent marijuana users over three weeks of abstinence.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits that persist up to a month have been detected among adult marijuana users, but decrements and their pattern of recovery are less known in adolescent users. Previously, we reported cognitive deficits among adolescent marijuana users after one month of abstinence (Medina, Hanson, Schweinsburg, Cohen-Zion, Nagel, & Tapert, 2007). In this longitudinal study, we characterized neurocognitive changes among marijuana-using adolescents across the first three weeks of abstinence. METHOD: Participants were adolescent marijuana users with limited alcohol and other drug use

Action Feedback Enables Novices to Implicitly Acquire Task Regularities from Experts During Joint Statistical Learning.

Joint statistical learning enables interacting individuals to form shared representations, but prior research has primarily focused on homogeneous dyads with equivalent expertise. Real-world interactions often involve knowledge asymmetries, yet it remains unclear how novices implicitly acquire statistical regularities from expert partners via sensorimotor signals. This study investigated whether novices can implicitly extract sequence regularities to enhance joint statistical learning and compared two candidate mechanisms, action feedback versus action visibility. Using a modified serial react
