Coherence motion perception in developmental dyslexia: a meta-analysis of behavioral studies.

The magnitude of the association between developmental dyslexia (DD) and motion sensitivity is evaluated in 35 studies, which investigated coherence motion perception in DD. A first analysis is conducted on the differences between DD groups and age-matched control (C) groups. In a second analysis, the relationship between motion coherence threshold and reading ability is considered. Globally, the mean effect size (ES) is moderate (d = 0.675, 2334 subjects) with a large value (d = 0.747) for the between-groups differences in motion perception and a smaller mean ES (d = 0.178) for the correlatio

Alice in Wonderland syndrome as aura of migraine.

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS), named for Lewis Carroll's titular character, is a disorder characterized by transient episodes of visual hallucinations and perceptual distortions, during which objects or body parts are perceived as altered in various ways (metamorphopsia), including enlargement (macropsia) or reduction (micropsia) in the perceived size of a form. Migraine aura is a transient neurological symptom that most commonly involves the visual fields and occurs before the headache phase. Aura symptoms include the perception of flashing lights that begin in the center of vision and

The effects of sleep debt on risk perception, risk attraction and betting behavior during a blackjack style gambling task.

Gamblers often gamble while experiencing fatigue due to sleep deprivation or cumulative sleep debt. Such fatigue has been shown to make decision makers behave more riskily. The present study aimed to test the role of two cognitive processes, risk perception and risk attraction, in this effect. Two hundred and two participants played twelve hands of a black-jack style card game while either fatigued or reasonably alert. Findings showed that both fatigued and alert participants rated higher risk bets as more risky than lower risk bets, suggesting risk perception was unaffected by fatigue. Howeve

Risk Compensation: How Vaccination Impacts Social Distancing in an Online Natural Experiment.

Amidst mass immunization efforts to curb COVID-19 transmission, policy mandates enforced minimum physical distancing. Concerns arose regarding risk compensation, where individuals might reduce adherence to distancing if benefiting from multiple risk-reducing interventions. This study used an online natural experiment to examine the association of vaccination status and vaccine efficacy beliefs with social distancing preferences. Participants completed a distance-matching task, positioning avatars in stylized scenarios drawn from a 2 (location) × $\times$ 3 (activity) factorial design. Data we

"I feel a lot more connected with my body after a session": a focus group exploration of the impact of exoskeleton walking on highly experienced robotic exoskeleton walkers.

PURPOSE: Robotic exoskeleton walking has become increasingly prevalent in the management of paralysis. To support better integration into clinical practice, there is a need to understand the users' perceptions of the effects of exposure to large volumes of robotic walking. This study aims to describe the patient perspective of exoskeleton walking for the expert user. METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with 19 participants (group size range 3-4) who had experienced large numbers of exoskeleton walking sessions (>24). The qualitative methodology used an interpretive phenomenological design an

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on experimental pain perception: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies have examined the effectiveness of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on human pain perception in both healthy populations and pain patients. Nevertheless, studies have yielded conflicting results, likely due to differences in stimulation parameters, experimental paradigms, and outcome measures. Human experimental pain models that utilize indices of pain in response to well-controlled noxious stimuli can avoid many confounds present in clinical data. This study aimed to assess the robustness of tDCS effects on experimental pain perception among healthy popul

Potential Impacts of Body Image Perception in Female Equestrians.

Female body image (BI) has been investigated in many sports yet, in female-dominated equestrianism, there is a paucity of BI research. This study aimed to identify self-perceptions of BI, rider perceptions of judge and coach bias, relationships between BI and self-consciousness and effect of breast size. A four-part, 27 question survey (GoogleForms) was completed by female equestrians (n = 493). The second smallest BI was considered ideal for equestrianism (χ2 = 352.751, P < .001) regardless of age, own BI or level of riding commitment. There was a perception judges favor riders with smaller f

The impact of weak inertial stimulation on visual-vestibular bimodal heading perception.

Perception of self-motion involves the integration of visual and vestibular sensory information. Currently, there is limited research exploring visual-vestibular interactions under weak vestibular stimulation. This study investigates the impact of weak inertial stimulation on visual-vestibular bimodal heading perception. A translational XY-axis motion platform equipped with a 46-inch LCD TV was utilized to generate synchronized visual and inertial stimuli. The heading perception was examined under visual-only, vestibular-only, and bimodal conditions using three levels of inertial stimuli (9 mg

The Relative Contribution of Facial and Body Information to the Perception of Cuteness.

Faces and bodies both provide cues to age and cuteness, but little work has explored their interaction in cuteness perception. This study examines the interplay of facial and bodily cues in the perception of cuteness, particularly when these cues convey conflicting age information. Participants rated the cuteness of face-body composites that combined either a child or adult face with an age-congruent or incongruent body alongside manipulations of the head-to-body height ratio (HBR). The findings from two experiments indicated that child-like facial features enhanced the perceived cuteness of a

Lidocaine lubricant jelly does not reduce pain perception during female urethral catheterization: A systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The use of lubrication before performing urethral catheterization has been recommended. However, the benefit of using lidocaine gel over plain lubricant gel in reducing pain perception during female urethral catheterization is unclear. With this review, we aimed to compare the pain perception during female urethral catheterization with or without lidocaine lubricant gel. METHODS: In this study, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing 2% lidocaine gel and plain lubricant gel in reducing pain perc

Pleasantness ratings in response to affective touch across hairy and glabrous skin: A meta-analysis.

The processing of hedonic aspects of touch, namely affective touch, is associated with the activation of C-Tactile (CT) fibers. CTs were thought to be present only in hairy skin, with glabrous skin being often used as control site in affective touch studies. Nevertheless, several articles comparing pleasantness perception across hairy and glabrous skin reported no significant differences. Surprisingly, CT fibers have also been recently detected on the glabrous palm, further questioning whether affective touch perception across both hairy and glabrous skin is comparable. The present meta-analys

Size precedes view: developmental emergence of invariant object representations in lateral occipital complex.

Although object perception involves encoding a wide variety of object properties (e.g., size, color, viewpoint), some properties are irrelevant for identifying the object. The key to successful object recognition is having an internal representation of the object identity that is insensitive to these properties while accurately representing important diagnostic features. Behavioral evidence indicates that the formation of these kinds of invariant object representations takes many years to develop. However, little research has investigated the developmental emergence of invariant object represe

Contrast sensitivity of MT receptive field centers and surrounds.

Neurons throughout the visual system have receptive fields with both excitatory and suppressive components. The latter are responsible for a phenomenon known as surround suppression, in which responses decrease as a stimulus is extended beyond a certain size. Previous work has shown that surround suppression in the primary visual cortex depends strongly on stimulus contrast. Such complex center-surround interactions are thought to relate to a variety of functions, although little is known about how they affect responses in the extrastriate visual cortex. We have therefore examined the interact

Grasping without form discrimination in a hemianopic field.

Although patients with blindsight are usually unable to discriminate forms, recent neuropsychological data have suggested that they could still use some form attributes in object-oriented actions. One patient with a complete right hemianopia due to a medial occipital lesion has been tested for his capacities to process orientation and size of visual objects. He was presented with either a slot of variable orientation or with rectangular objects of the same surface but variable length. His performance was studied in three types of tasks: motor, in which he had to insert a card in the slot or to

An investigation of the effect of temporal contiguity training on size-tolerant representations in object-selective cortex.

The human visual system has a remarkable ability to reliably identify objects across variations in appearance, such as variations in viewpoint, lighting and size. Here we used fMRI in humans to test whether temporal contiguity training with natural and altered image dynamics can respectively build and break neural size tolerance for objects. Participants (N = 23) were presented with sequences of images of "growing" and "shrinking" objects. In half of the trials, the object also changed identity when the size change happened. According to the temporal contiguity hypothesis, and studies with a

Designing Dual Compartment HIV Prevention Products: Women's Sensory Perceptions and Experiences of Suppositories for Rectal and Vaginal Use.

Dual compartment suppositories are being developed to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Such products, for use in the rectum, the vagina, or both, could have a significant public health impact by decreasing global incidence of these diseases. In this study, 16 women each used two rheologically distinct suppositories in their vagina and rectum. User Sensory Perception and Experience (USPE) scales assessed sensory experiences during sexual activity to understand whether, and how, women perceive formulation properties in the vagina and rectum. Reconstructive surgery for hypospadias: A systematic review of long-term patient satisfaction with cosmetic outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Research on long-term results of hypospadias has focused on surgical techniques and functional outcomes, and it is only recently that patient satisfaction with appearance and psychosocial outcomes have been considered. The aim of this study was to provide an evidence-based systematic review of adolescent and adult patient perceptions of cosmetic outcomes following childhood surgery for hypospadias. METHODS: A systematic review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA and PICO guidelines, and studies assessed using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine system. MEDLINE,
