Smartphone-controlled biosensor for viral respiratory infectious diseases: Screening and response.

Outbreaks of emerging viral respiratory infectious diseases (VRIDs) including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) seriously endanger people's health. However, the traditional nucleic acid detection required professionals and larger instruments and antigen-antibody detection suffered a long window period of target generation. To facilitate the VRIDs detection in time for common populations, a smartphone-controlled biosensor, which integrated sample preparation (electromembrane extraction), biomarker detection (red-green-blue model) and remote response technology (a built-in APP), was developed

Fabrication of 3D Models for Microtia Reconstruction Using Smartphone-Based Technology.

OBJECTIVE: Microtia reconstruction is technically challenging due to the intricate contours of the ear. It is common practice to use a two-dimensional tracing of the patient's normal ear as a template for the reconstruction of the affected side. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) surface scanning and printing have expanded the ability to create surgical models preoperatively. This study aims to describe a simple and affordable process to fabricate patient-specific 3D ear models for use in the operating room. STUDY DESIGN: Applied basic research on a novel 3D optical scanning and fabric

Excessive reassurance seeking mediates relations between rumination and problematic smartphone use.

Aside from depression and anxiety, less is known about the relationship of problematic smartphone use (PSU) to other psychopathology- related variables. The authors' aim was to test previously neglected variables in relation to PSU: rumination and excessive reassurance seeking behavior (ERSB). The authors recruited 295 college students for a web-based survey of smartphone use frequency, PSU, depression and anxiety, ruminative thinking, and ERSB. The authors tested linear regression and mediation models, assessing rumination and ERSB as mediating associations between depression/anxiety severity

Smartphone-based diabetic macula edema screening with an offline artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a sight-threatening condition that needs regular examinations and remedies. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the most common used examination to evaluate the structure and thickness of the macula, but the software in the OCT machine does not tell the clinicians whether DME exists directly. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to aid in diagnosis generation and therapy selection. We thus develop a smartphone-based offline AI system that provides diagnostic suggestions and medical strategies through analyzing OCT images from diabetic

MII RetCam assisted smartphone based fundus imaging for retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: The gold standard for evaluating Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a potentially blinding disease in preterm babies, is by indirect ophthalmoscopy which is quite subjective. Digital imaging with RetCam, an advanced wide field imaging system is more precise but it is not easily available or affordable. Smartphones are being explored as an alternate cost effective and accessible imaging tool. This is possible because of the good illumination and the built-in high resolution cameras available in modern smartphones. The aim of this study is to illustrate the utility of MII RetCam assisted

Smartphone-centred wearable sensors network for monitoring patients with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar Disorder is a severe form of mental illness. It is characterized by alternated episodes of mania and depression, and it is treated typically with a combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Recognizing early warning signs of upcoming phases of mania or depression would be of great help for a personalized medical treatment. Unfortunately, this is a difficult task to be performed for both patient and doctors. In this paper we present the MONARCA wearable system, which is meant for recognizing early warning signs and predict maniac or depressive episodes. The system is a smartphon

StimVision: smartphone video kinematics to optimize DBS programming in Parkinson's disease.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) improves motor function in Parkinson's disease, yet programming remains labor-intensive and largely subjective. We evaluated a smartphone video-based kinematic framework (StimVision) for objective, within-session optimization of DBS settings and characterization of therapeutic motor signatures. Fifteen patients with subthalamic DBS performed repetitive hand opening-closing while multiple stimulation programs were tested in the medication-off state. Markerless pose estimation from 60 fps smartphone video generated 23 quantitative kinematic features. A patient-specif

Circuit-Free Cardiovascular Monitoring via Smartphone-Readable Skin-Interfaced Nanophotonic Films.

Nanoscale mechano-optical surfaces enable electronics-free strain sensing, attractive for skin-interfaced devices, yet reported implementations require laser/spectrometer interrogation, negating this advantage. Here, we report electrically passive mechanical transduction of arterial pulsation into diffractive colour shifts read by unmodified smartphone cameras, enabled by a dual-function monolithic poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. Using large-area double-sided nanoimprinting, we achieve a strain-sensitive nanophotonic surface on one face of the film and a bio-inspired 3D structural adhesive
