BACKGROUND: Snake bite is a grossly underreported public health issue in subtropical, tropical suburban, and rural areas of Africa and South Asia. In literature, ophitoxemia (snake bite envenomation) as a cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is limited to very few case reports. Viper envenomation is the most common cause of ACS among snake bites. We report the first case of unstable angina caused by Colubridae snake bite (Ahaetullanasuta, commonly called green snakes) in a young man without comorbidities.
CASE REPORT: A young healthy man had a green snake bite that was camouflaged in the gr

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies snake bites as neglected public health problem affecting mostly tropical and subtropical countries. In Africa there are an estimated 1 million snake bites annually with about half needing a specific treatment. Women, children and farmers in poor rural communities in developing countries are the most affected. Case management of snake bites are not adequate in many health facilities in developing countries where personnel are not always abreast with the new developments in snake bite management and in addition, quite often the anti-venom serum is l

Snake bites are an uncommon injury requiring intervention by hand surgeons. While counteracting the effects of snake venom is the initial and urgent concern following a bite, infection caused by retention of a foreign body can present in a delayed fashion and may lead to increased morbidity. Standard radiographs of the injury should be carefully examined for foreign bodies, noting that retained snake teeth are somewhat radiolucent due to less mineralization as compared to bone and can be difficult to visualize. In our subject, a retained rattlesnake fang was found in association with a septic

Two young patients are described who made complete recovery from locked-in syndrome (LIS) after snakebites. LIS was a presenting feature in a patient of presumed snake bite who showed complete response to polyvalent Anti-snake venom (ASV). This case suggests that elapid snake bite should be suspected in unresponsive patient found in early morning in endemic areas of snake bite in monsoon season. The second case was admitted in complete LIS state with history of rapidly progressive ptosis, diplopia, ophthalmoplegia, bulbar symptoms and quadriparesis, 6 hours after snake bite. Snake bite is one of the major public health problems in India. Venom induced consumption coagulopathy(VICC) is the commonest coagulopathy resulting from viper bites. Anti-snake venom(ASV) is the only mainstay therapy in the management of snake bite. Despite anti-venom being efficacious and bonding to multiple toxins in the venom, there are number of reasons it may not be effective. The most important being irreversible toxic effects cannot be reversed by antivenom to toxin after damage has occurred, such as clotting factor deficiencies resulting from VICC. This study was done to evaluate the

Clinical register of 60 patients bitten by Bothrops snake who assisted at Leopoldo Manrique Hospital and the Institute of Tropical Medicine (HLM-IMT) in Caracas during 1996-1997 were analysed. The accident was more frequent in males (45/75%). In 32 cases (53.3%) the snake was classified and 26 were Bothrops lanceolatus, 4 Bothrops venezuelensis and 2 Bothrops atrox. Anatomic regions more frequent bitten were superior members (40/66.6%): hands (36/60%), forearm (2/3.3%), elbow (1/1.6%) and arm (1/1.6%). On inferior members (20/33.3%): legs (6/10%), feet (10/16.7%), ankle (2/3.3%), and the hip (

Snake bite is a neglected tropical disease affecting millions of people across the globe. The highest burden exists in South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Around 45900 deaths could be attributed to snake bites in India with 25% of these deaths occurring in children between age group of 5-14 years. Snake bites can broadly present with hemotoxic and neurotoxic manifestations. Management of snake envenomation comprises of first aid measures, administration of ASV (Anti-Snake Venom), strict monitoring, supportive management in the form of pain relief, correcting coagulation parameters and flui

Venom detection is crucial for confirmation of envenomation and snake type in snake-bite patients. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is used to detect venom, but antivenom in samples prevents venom detection. We aimed to detect snake venom in post-antivenom samples after dissociating venom-antivenom complexes with glycine-HCl (pH 2.2) and heating for 30 min at 950 °C. Serum samples underwent dissociation treatment and then Russell's viper venom or Australian elapid venom measured by EIA. In confirmed Russell's viper bites with venom detected pre-antivenom (positive controls), no venom was detected in u

Case records of persons with snakebite treated at the Johannesburg General Hospital and the Transvaal Memorial Children's Hospital during the 10-year period 1963-1972 were investigated. It was concluded that (i) snakebites were rare, since only 39 cases were recorded, none of which ended fatally; (ii) 86% of patients were men (mean age was 24 years); (iii) 80% of bites were on the hand and arm; (iv) 28% of patients had had previous snakebites; and (v) 60% of bites were 'illegitimate', i.e. they occurred in snake handlers. Apart from occasional bites by exotic snakes in collections, the venomou

Snake bite is commonly encountered problem in India and world-wide. Common neurological presentation of snake bite includes neuromuscular junction dysfunction leading to acute neuromuscular paralysis. But snake envenomation affecting peripheral nerves is rarely reported. Authors are reporting a post cytotoxic snake bite Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is the sixth case reported till date.

BACKGROUND: Snake bites are a major cause of emergency visits in tropical countries like India, with actual mortality and morbidity likely higher due to underreporting. The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical and demographic profiles of snake bites at the Department of Emergency Medicine, AIIMS Rishikesh, over two years (July 2021 to July 2023).
METHODS: Patients aged over 18 with witnessed or suspected snake bites were included. Data on demographics, clinical history, laboratory parameters, treatment, and outcomes were collected.
RESULTS: Most patients were male (68.3%) and aged 31

BACKGROUND: The variation of venom composition with geography is an important aspect of intraspecific variability in the Vipera genus, although causes of this variability remain unclear. The diversity of snake venom is important both for our understanding of venomous snake evolution and for the preparation of relevant antivenoms to treat envenomations. A geographic intraspecific variation in snake venom composition was recently reported for Vipera aspis aspis venom in France. Since 1992, cases of human envenomation after Vipera aspis aspis bites in south-east France involving unexpected neurol

Objective: To report two patients who developed systemic neurotoxicity after consecutive bites by the same coral snake.Case report: Two previously healthy men (32-year-old and 34-year-old) found a coral snake in a woodpile while collecting wood for a barbecue. During the barbecue, both men became drunk and "played" with the snake, believing that they were handling a false coral snake, and were bitten within a few minutes of each other. Both patients were admitted to a referral tertiary care hospital (175 km from where the bites occurred) 16 hours and 19 hours postbite; both showed similar feat

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Snake bites represent a significant public health issue worldwide, as venomous snake bites can result in lethal consequences if not treated promptly, including both local and systemic effects. The local symptoms of a snake bite commonly include tissue necrosis, edema, and compartment syndrome (CS). While CS is a rare complication following a snake bite, it may be more pronounced in children who typically have lower total dilution volume. Currently, the administration of anti-snake venom and prompt fasciotomy are the only specific treatments available for CS.

Snake bite is a major cause of mortality in the Indian subcontinent. The condition is fraught with the problem of under reporting. Most bites in India are caused by the "Big 4 species," based on this, the anti-snake venom (ASV) is also sourced from these species only. It has been observed that the venom of snakes from different regions respond differently to it, as is sourced mainly from snakes of southern region of India. We present a case of a saw-scaled viper (SSV) bite, where the patient had unusual presentation of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) along with venom-induced consumption coagu

Epidemiological and clinical aspects of snakebites in Hungary between 1970 and 2006 were surveyed. A total of 97 cases were recorded from 21 species, including the two native vipers, Vipera berus and Vipera ursinii, and various exotic species represented by Viperidae, Elapidae, and Colubridae. Bites by native species on laymen are uncommon (17 cases) and present trivial clinical manifestations. Compared with the consequences of native Vipera cases, bites by exotic species often resulted in severe or life-threatening envenomations. These cases were treated with antivenom administration, plasmap
