Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD): A contemporary review.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an increasingly recognized cause of myocardial infarction that most frequently affects younger women, making it an important cause of morbidity and mortality within these demographics. The evolution of intracoronary imaging, improved diagnosis with coronary angiography, and ongoing research efforts and attention via social media, has led to increasing recognition of this previously underdiagnosed condition. In this review, we provide a summary of the current body of knowledge, as well as focused updates on the pathogenesis of SCAD, insights on g

Social inequalities and dynamics of the early COVID-19 epidemic: a prospective cohort study in France.

OBJECTIVE: Although social inequalities in COVID-19 mortality by race, gender and socioeconomic status are well documented, less is known about social disparities in infection rates and their shift over time. We aim to study the evolution of social disparities in infection at the early stage of the epidemic in France with regard to the policies implemented. DESIGN: Random population-based prospective cohort. SETTING: From May to June 2020 in France. PARTICIPANTS: Adults included in the Epidémiologie et Conditions de Vie cohort (n=77 588). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-reported anosmia and/or

The paradigms of female beauty: From antiquity to the contemporary era. A historical and evolutionary perspective.

Throughout history, the perception of female beauty has been shaped by cultural and historical values as well as evolutionary patterns. Understanding these paradigms is essential to grasping these concepts and their evolution, and to applying them to contemporary treatments. This comprehensive review aims to synthesize historical, evolutionary, and anthropometric data regarding female beauty, tracing its evolution to modern clinical applications in aesthetic medicine. We analyze the various standards of beauty from antiquity-spanning ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and Rome-up to the present da

[Joubert's syndrome. Presentation of two adult siblings with favorable evolution].

We present the case of two siblings with Joubert's syndrome. They had breathing problems of unknown origin during the neonatal period. Their evolution has been followed-up from the first years of age until the present. They are now 26 and 22 years old, respectively. Both patients have a "borderline" mental level, are apparently normal, but have had progressive evolution and psychic and motor improvement. They can read, write and use the four operations in mathematics and can work with the computer. Both siblings are working in the familial agriculture, can play football at an elemental level w

Proximate and ultimate causes of ritual behavior.

Ritual behaviour, intended as a specific, repetitive and rigid form of action flow, appears both in social and non-social environmental contexts, representing an ubiquitous phenomenon in animal life including human individuals and cultures. The purpose of this contribution is to investigate an evolutionary continuum in proximate and ultimate causes of ritual behavior. A phylogenetic homology in proximal mechanisms can be found, based on the repetition of genetically programmed and/or epigenetically acquired action patterns of behavior. As far as its adaptive significance, ethological comparati

Changing perspectives for practice in stuttering: echoes from a Celtic past, when wordlessness was entitled to time.

Changing perspectives for practice in stuttering therapy are informed by the changes in knowledge, social values, and belief systems of a society. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF; World Health Organization, 2001) has a sociological emphasis with a focus on the ability and functioning of the person, and it is currently fostering changes in perspectives for working with those who stutter. These perspectives are reflected in Irish social mores in the 7th and 8th centuries, when social and legal codes enshrined the rights of people with speech disabiliti

[The transsexualism syndrome: clinical aspects and therapeutic prospects].

The prevalence rate of transsexualism varies from 1 to 50,000, to 1 to 100,000. Although it remains an infrequent affliction, transsexualism generates usually major suffering and may be responsible of many complications like suicide, self-mutilations, affective disorders and social disabilities. Since the first descriptions of Esquirol in the nineteenth, the medical community has always been questioned on medical, legal, social or ethical aspects of transsexualism. The aetiology of the trouble is still unknown. In the absence of biological marker, the syndrome of transsexualism can be defined

Multiplayer social dilemmas in completely mixed populations and networks of mixing communities.

Human and non-human animals often form highly structured social systems in which individuals interact preferentially within specific groups, shaped by habitat structure, movement patterns, or social preferences. We consider a model that captures the interplay between social structure and emerging behaviour. Individuals are probabilistically distributed across the nodes of a spatial network representing interaction sites such as resource patches, territorial areas, or social hubs. Individuals present at the same node interact through a multiplayer game, so group structure is not imposed but ins

Chemoreception in crocodilians: anatomy, natural history, and empirical results.

Anatomical and behavioral aspects of chemoreception in crocodilians are reviewed. Extant crocodilians possess valvular nostrils regulated by smooth muscles; paired nasal cavities, each with three conchae; and flaps closing the rear of the buccopharyngeal passage to channel inspired air through the nasopharyngeal duct. Olfaction is enhanced by gular pumping, whereby the floor of the pharynx is alternately lowered and raised to pulse air through the nasal cavity. Taste buds occur on the tongue, palate, and pharyngeal walls. Crocodilians in nature or in semi-natural enclosures locate distant carr

[Weltanschauung aspects of the problem of man, the biosphere and space].

The paper discusses philosophic approaches to the problem of man-environment interplay. Many important problems humanity faces today are associated with biology. Biomedical and astrophysical studies are being carried out to gain a better insight into the laws governing evolution and further development of the Universe. The emergence of a human society started a qualitatively new stage in the evolution of organic matter. A rapid progress of science and engineering is accompanied by a significant rearrangement of the natural environment and, particularly, of living beings. The biosphere is trans

Trajectories of covarying depression and multiple physical health problems in middle-aged and older adults based on GBMTM: Longitudinal evidence from CHARLS.

Depression in middle-aged and older adults often co-occurs with multiple physical health problems, yet its long-term co-evolution patterns remain unclear. Using data from 4 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2018, group-based multi-trajectory modeling was employed to identify covarying trajectories of depressive symptoms, number of chronic diseases, chronic pain, and functional disability. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze predictive factors. A total of 8961 participants aged 45 and above were included. Four distinct trajectories were ide

Long-Term Evolution of Functional Limitations in Stroke Survivors Compared With Stroke-Free Controls: Findings From 15 Years of Follow-Up Across 3 International Surveys of Aging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In the chronic phase 2 to 5 years poststroke, limitations in activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL) initially plateau before steady increasing. However, the impact of age and differences in initial levels of disability on the evolution of these limitations remains unclear. As such, this study aims to evaluate differences in long-term evolution of ADL/IADL limitations between stroke survivors and stroke-free population, and how limitations differ by initial level of disability for stroke survivors. METHODS: Thirty-three thousand six hundred sixty p

Towards a common framework for assessing the activity and associations of groups who sexually abuse children.

Extensive social psychological research emphasises the importance of groups in shaping individuals' thoughts and actions. Within the child sexual abuse (CSA) literature criminal organisation has been largely overlooked, with some key exceptions. This research was a novel collaboration between academia and the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP). Starting from the premise that the group is, in itself, a form of social situation affecting abuse, it offers the first systematic situational analysis of CSA groups. In-depth behavioural data from a small sample of convicted CS

Barriers and facilitators to community reintegration in adults following traumatic upper limb amputation: an exploratory study.

PURPOSE: To explore barriers and facilitators to community reintegration experienced by people following traumatic upper limb amputation (ULA). METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with ten adults with major ULA due to trauma. Data from individual, semi-structured interviews was analysed using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Underlying and influencing community reintegration for participants, was a process of adjustment to the impacts of amputation on everyday function and re-establishing their identity. Participants felt social networks and peer s

Unity Brings Mutual Benefits: The Huddling Strategies of Temperate-Living Primates in Cold Environments.

Behavioral thermoregulation is a key adaptive tactic shaped by natural selection and species evolution, enabling animals to cope with variable thermal environments, particularly facing cold challenges. Quantifying the thermal and energetic consequences of behavior in the wild provides key insights into how animals cope with environmental challenges. Our study examines huddling, a typical social thermoregulatory behavior in the golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana), the northernmost distributed colobine primate, using behavioral observations and infrared thermography to assess its

Two distinct neural pathways for mechanical versus digital technology.

Technology pervades every aspect of our lives, making it crucial to investigate how the human mind deals with it. Here we examine the cognitive and neural foundations of technological cognition. In the first fMRI experiment, participants viewed videos depicting the use of mechanical tools (e.g., a screwdriver) and digital tools (e.g., a smartphone) compared to simple object movements. Results revealed a key dissociation: mechanical tools extensively activated the dorsal and ventro-dorsal visual streams, which are motor- and action-oriented brain systems. Conversely, digital tools largely engag

Schizophrenia dissection by five anxiety and depressive subtype comorbidities: Clinical implications and evolutionary perspective.

Twenty patients with DSM5 schizophrenia were comprehensively and formally assessed by an experienced psychiatrist. All subjects were assessed for: positive and negative psychotic symptoms; social anxiety; panic anxiety; obsessive compulsive disorder, atypical depression; major depression; suicide risk; and global assessment of functioning. Different profiles of clinical presentation and symptom evolution emerged for patients with schizophrenia who had co-morbid depression (15%), OCD (15%), panic or limited symptom attacks (55%) and social anxiety (5%). At least eighty percent of the sample had

Interactions of the bacteriome, virome, and immune system in the nose.

Emerging evidence suggests that the nasal microbiome may influence host susceptibility to initial development and severity of respiratory viral infections. While not as extensively studied as the microbiota of the alimentary tract, it is now clearly established that the microbial composition of this niche is influenced by medical, social and pharmacological influences, predisposing some sub-populations to respiratory infections. The resulting specific microbial profiles may explain variance in susceptibility to viral infection. This review summaries the evolution and constituents of the commen

[Anxiety disorders and substance-related disorders].

Psychiatric comorbidity between anxiety disorders and substance-related disorders is studied. This relationship is complex due to the overlapping of symptoms (during the abstinence of alcohol and opiates as well as in the intoxication of cocaine) and also for the inaccurate definition of several disorders. Epidemiologic studies show an increase of prevalence of anxiety disorders, mainly agoraphobia and social phobia, in patients who are alcohol dependents and in heroine and cocaine users. Such studies also point out an augmentation of consume of substances (drugs and alcohol), with a prevalenc
