Sodium-containing versus sodium-trace preparations of IVIG for children with Kawasaki disease in the acute phase.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis that most commonly causes acquired cardiac disease in children in developed countries. The most highly recommended treatment for KD is 2 g/kg intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). There are two types of IVIG, sodium-containing (high-Na) and sodium-trace (low-Na) preparations. However, few studies have compared the effects of these two preparations for superiority. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between high and low-Na IVIG preparations in KD children using a national inpatient database in Japan. We used the Diagnostic Proced

Roles of sodium hydrosulfide and sodium nitroprusside as priming molecules during drought acclimation in citrus plants.

Emerging evidence suggests that the gaseous molecules hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) enhances plant acclimation to stress; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we explored if pretreatment of citrus roots with NaHS (a H2S donor) or sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a NO donor) for 2 days (d) could elicit long-lasting priming effects to subsequent exposure to PEG-associated drought stress for 21 d following a 5 d acclimation period. Detailed physiological study documented that both pretreatments primed plants against drought stress. Analysis of the level of nit

The effect of ozagrel sodium on photochemical thrombosis in rat: therapeutic window and combined therapy with heparin sodium.

The therapeutic efficacy of ozagrel sodium (ozagrel), alone and in combination with heparin, and its therapeutic time window were studied in a photochemically induced thrombotic cerebral infarction rat model. Cerebral artery thrombosis was induced by irradiating the brain with green light through intact skull using rose bengal as the photosensitizing dye. One set of animals was treated immediately after thrombosis with (1) vehicle, (2) 10 mg/kg ozagrel in saline, intravenously (i.v.), (3) 150 U/kg unfractioned heparin, subcutaneously (s.c.), or (4) ozagrel, i.v. plus heparin, s.c. Induction of morphological changes in the urothelium of cultured adult rat bladder by sodium saccharin and sodium cyclamate.

The direct effects of sodium saccharin and sodium cyclamate on the morphology of organ cultures of normal rat bladder have been studied by histology and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Untreated cultures retained histologically normal urothelia up to 89 days with cell surface features characteristic of mature, fully differentiated superficial cells and maturing intermediate cells. Continuous treatment with either sodium saccharin (6 or 12 mM) or sodium cyclamate (12 or 24 mM) induced progressive abnormalities in the cultured urothelium. Acute toxicity was not seen but focal necrosis was ob

Actions of ethanol on voltage-sensitive sodium channels: effects on neurotoxin-stimulated sodium uptake in synaptosomes.

Exposure of rat brain synaptosomes to ethanol in vitro reduced the neurotoxin-stimulated uptake of 22Na+. This effect of ethanol was concentration-dependent, occurred with concentrations of ethanol achieved in vivo and was fully reversible. The inhibitory effect of ethanol on neurotoxin-stimulated sodium uptake was due to a decrease in the maximal effect of the neurotoxins. Ethanol reduced the rate of batrachotoxin-stimulated sodium uptake when measured at 3, 5 and 7 but not 10 or 20 sec after the addition of 22Na+. In a series of aliphatic alcohols, there was a good correlation between potenc

Sodium butyrate attenuates oxidative stress, apoptosis, and excessive mitophagy in sodium fluoride-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.

AIM: Long-term exposure to excess sodium fluoride (NaF) can cause chronic fluorosis. Liver, the most important detoxification organ, is the most vulnerable to the effects of fluoride. Sodium butyrate (NaB), a short-chain fatty acid produced in the intestinal tract, maintains normal mitochondrial function in vivo and reduces liver inflammation and oxidative stress. This study aims to investigate the protective effect and potential mechanism of NaB on liver injury in fluoride poisoned rats, particularly through the mitophagy pathway. METHODS: Rats were randomly divided into four groups of 12 ma

Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor therapy: use in chronic kidney disease and adjunctive sodium restriction.

The global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has increased significantly over the past few decades. This reflects the rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension, two leading causes of CKD. Hypertension, which can also be a complication of CKD, accelerates renal disease progression and augments cardiovascular risk, especially in individuals with diabetic kidney disease. Hence, blood pressure (BP) reduction is a vital component of CKD management. Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are a relatively novel class of medications developed to treat T2DM

Crosstalk between Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter Inhibitors and Sodium-Hydrogen Exchanger 1 and 3 in Cardiometabolic Diseases.

Abnormality in glucose homeostasis due to hyperglycemia or insulin resistance is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These metabolic abnormalities in T2DM lead to cellular dysfunction and the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure. New antihyperglycemic agents including glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and the sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been shown to attenuate endothelial dysfunction at the cellular level. In addition, they improved cardiovascular safety by exhibiting cardioprotective effects. The mechanism by which th

Reducing catheter-associated complications using 4% sodium citrate versus sodium heparin as a catheter lock solution.

OBJECTIVE: Use of a catheter lock solution plays a decisive role in vascular access. The effects of different concentrations of heparin and different types of catheter lock solutions are controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of sodium citrate and sodium heparin catheter lock solutions. METHODS: A total of 120 patients were divided into four groups (30 patients per group) according to the use of catheter lock solution as follows: 6250 U/mL sodium heparin, 5000 U/mL sodium heparin, 2500 U/mL sodium heparin, and 4% sodium citrate. Intestinal Mineralocorticoid Receptor Contributes to Epithelial Sodium Channel-Mediated Intestinal Sodium Absorption and Blood Pressure Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) has pathological roles in various cell types, including renal tubule cells, myocytes, and smooth muscle cells; however, the role of MR in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) has not been sufficiently evaluated. The intestine is the sensing organ of ingested sodium; accordingly, intestinal MR is expected to have essential roles in blood pressure (BP) regulation. METHODS AND RESULTS: We generated IEC-specific MR knockout (IEC-MR-KO) mice. With a standard diet, fecal sodium excretion was 1.5-fold higher in IEC-MR-KO mice, with markedly decreased colonic

Gender and obesity influence sodium intake and fluid regulation in Zucker rats following repeated sodium depletions.

The Zucker obese rat is an important model for the metabolic syndrome, which includes renal disease and salt-sensitive hypertension, suggesting abnormalities of body fluid regulation. Here, in Zucker rats, lean and obese, and of both sexes, we compared 48 h of sodium intake and fluid regulation responses with repeated depletions with furosemide to repeated control saline injections. Increased urine volume excretion was observed after each furosemide administration for the 4 groups and obese rats excreted more than the leans on the control days. Male obese rats did not excrete sodium nor increa

Coexisting independent sodium-sensitive and sodium-insensitive mechanisms of genetic hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).

Some essential hypertensive patients and genetic hypertensive rat strains have less than the normal levels of Mg2+ tightly bound to the plasma membranes of their erythrocytes and other cells, i.e., the magnesium binding defect (MgBD). This binding defect appears to cause increased passive permeability of the membrane to Na+ and thereby its increased intracellular concentration, particularly if the Na+-extrusion enzyme systems of the cell are also defective. The Na+-Ca2+ exchange system in the cell membrane exports Na+ and imports Ca2+, increasing the tone of the smooth muscle cell and thus pro

Pathophysiology of sodium channelopathies. Studies of sodium channel expression by quantitative multiplex fluorescence polymerase chain reaction.

The inherited diseases hyperkalemic periodic paralysis and paramyotonia congenita are caused by mutations in the adult skeletal muscle sodium channel gene. To determine if differences in the expression patterns of the adult and cardiac/fetal sodium channel genes could explain some clinical features of these disorders, we developed a novel mRNA quantitation strategy called quantitative multiplex fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (QMF-PCR). This assay tests the relative levels of multiple mRNA species simultaneously using automated sequenators. We show validation of this method by competitiv

Sodium Hydroxide versus Phenol Chemical Matrixectomy.

BACKGROUND: Chemical matrixectomy (CM) is a common procedure to correct painful and ingrown toenails. At our institution, CMs are often performed with either sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or phenol as the chemical agent for germinal nail matrix destruction. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the recurrence and reoperation rates for this procedure using different chemical agents. METHODS: The medical records of 192 patients during a 2-year period were reviewed. All of the CMs were performed in a standard fashion by three podiatric physicians. RESULTS: Among phenol partial nail avulsions,

Biophysical mechanisms of myocardium sodium channelopathies.

Genetic variants of gene SCN5A encoding the alpha-subunit of cardiac voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.5 are associated with various diseases, including long QT syndrome (LQT3), Brugada syndrome (BrS1), and progressive cardiac conduction disease (PCCD). In the last decades, the great progress in understanding molecular and biophysical mechanisms of these diseases has been achieved. The LQT3 syndrome is associated with gain-of-function of sodium channels Nav1.5 due to impaired inactivation, enhanced activation, accelerated recovery from inactivation or the late current appearance. In contrast,

Charge transfer in sodium iodide collisions.

Sodium iodide (NaI) has, over the years, served as a prototype system in studies of non-adiabatic dynamics. Here, the charge transfer collision reactions Na+ + I- ⇆ Na + I (mutual neutralization and ion-pair formation) are studied using an ab initio approach and the total and differential cross sections are calculated for the reactions. This involves electronic structure calculations on NaI to obtain adiabatic potential energy curves, non-adiabatic and spin-orbit couplings, followed by nuclear dynamics, treated fully quantum mechanically in a strictly diabatic representation. A single avoided

Sodium azide poisoning: a narrative review.

CONTEXT: Sodium azide is a highly toxic chemical. Its production has increased dramatically over the last 30 years due to its widespread use in vehicular airbags, and it is available for purchase online. Thus, accidental exposure to azide or use as a homicidal or suicidal agent could be on the rise, and secondary exposure to medical personnel can occur. No antidote exists for azide poisoning. We conducted a systematic review of azide poisoning to assess recent poisoning reports, exposure scenarios, clinical presentations, and treatment strategies. METHODS: We searched both medical and newspap
