Science and Curation Considerations for the Design of a Mars Sample Return (MSR) Sample Receiving Facility (SRF).

The most important single element of the "ground system" portion of a Mars Sample Return (MSR) Campaign is a facility referred to as the Sample Receiving Facility (SRF), which would need to be designed and equipped to receive the returned spacecraft, extract and open the sealed sample container, extract the samples from the sample tubes, and implement a set of evaluations and analyses of the samples. One of the main findings of the first MSR Sample Planning Group (MSPG, 2019a) states that "The scientific community, for reasons of scientific quality, cost, and timeliness, strongly prefers that

Time-Sensitive Aspects of Mars Sample Return (MSR) Science.

Samples returned from Mars would be placed under quarantine at a Sample Receiving Facility (SRF) until they are considered safe to release to other laboratories for further study. The process of determining whether samples are safe for release, which may involve detailed analysis and/or sterilization, is expected to take several months. However, the process of breaking the sample tube seal and extracting the headspace gas will perturb local equilibrium conditions between gas and rock and set in motion irreversible processes that proceed as a function of time. Unless these time-sensitive proces

High throughput screen of small molecules as potential countermeasures to galactic cosmic radiation induced cellular dysfunction.

Space travel increases galactic cosmic ray exposure to flight crews and this is significantly elevated once travel moves beyond low Earth orbit. This includes combinations of high energy protons and heavy ions such as 56Fe or 16O. There are distinct differences in the biological response to low-energy transfer (x-rays) or high-energy transfer (High-LET). However, given the relatively low fluence rate of exposure during flight operations, it might be possible to manage these deleterious effects using small molecules currently available. Virtually all reports to date examining small molecule man

Blood transfusion for deep space exploration.

BACKGROUND: Astronauts on exploration missions may be at risk for traumatic injury and medical conditions that lead to life threatening hemorrhage. Resuscitation protocols are limited by the austere conditions of spaceflight. Solutions may be found in low-resource terrestrial settings. The existing literature on alternative blood product administration and walking blood banks was evaluated for applicability to spaceflight. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A literature review was done using PubMed and Google Scholar. References were crosschecked for additional publications not identified using the in

[Cytogenetic effects in human blood lymphocytes in vitro after irradiation by protons with 1-GEV energy].

Cytogenetic disorders in peripheral blood lymphocytes of humans were studied in culture following single irradiation by protons with energy of 1 GeV. Doses ranged from 0.05 to 2.0 Gy. A large number of structural damages were observed. Nature of dependence of frequency of such irradiation markers as dicentrics and centric ring was established. Relative biological coefficient of relative energy protons was calculated as 1.2.

The influence of weightlessness on pharmacokinetics.

The primary hostile factor during a spaceflight is the lack of gravity, which can induce space motion sickness and act on bones, muscles and the cardiovascular system. These physiological effects may modify the pharmacokinetics of the drugs administered during the flight producing reduced pharmacological activity or appearance of adverse effects. Given the small number of spaceflights and the difficulties of conducting experiments during missions, pharmacokinetic data obtained in flight are insufficient to determine if drug monitoring is necessary for the drugs present in the onboard medical k

Treatment efficacy of intramuscular promethazine for space motion sickness.

Intramuscular promethazine and its efficacy in the treatment of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) were evaluated using standardized questions administered during postflight debriefings to crewmembers immediately after their first Shuttle flight. Space Motion Sickness was graded as none, mild, moderate, or severe, based on published criteria. Immediate symptom relief (within 1-2 h) was evaluated by subjective reports; medication efficacy was based on scores derived from the four most frequently reported symptoms of SMS: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and stomach awareness. Scores were given for

Preliminary results of medical research on board the "Mir" orbital complex during its second main mission.

In 1987 the USSR orbital complex "Mir" accomplished its space mission, crewed by Yu.V. Romanenko (326 days), and A.I. Laveykin (about 176 days), who was replaced on the orbit (in consequence of some cardiac function peculiarities revealed in exercise conditions) by A.P. Aleksandrov (about 160 days). During the flight, extravehicular activity in the open space was carried out three times, and conjoint programmes were conducted, over a period of seven days, with an international Soviet-Syrian crew. The most important, fundamental result of the medical studies carried out in this flight seems to

General remarks on the role of the vestibular system in weightlessness.

Different methods are described to experimentally achieve weightlessness. Since the function of the otolith system depends on the presence of contact forces opposing gravity, it is disabled in weightlessness and may send misleading positional information to the brain. Without the contributions of the otolith system it is difficult in space to distinguish self-motion from object motion. Furthermore, the disintegration of information from the neck position receptors from those of the otolith system can lead to additional illusory positional sensations. Since the function of the semicircular cana

[These vestibular problems in the absence of gravity...].

For a few years, more and more astronauts complain to endure space motion sickness during the two or three first days of their mission. This is due to the repetition of shifting and sudden head movements, which becomes possible by the increasing of volume of the new space stations. To avoid that payload specialists onboard be obliged to renounce to conduct planned experiments, it has been necessary to find effective solutions to detect by ground based tests the candidates sensitive to space motion sickness and perfect therapeutic means able to avoid unexpected arrival of these symptoms, and ev

Epigenetic Suppression of RASAL1 by HDAC3 and Cofactor YY1 Promotes Fibroblast-Myofibroblast Transition and Renal Fibrosis.

AIM: Astronauts return to Earth with reduced red cell masses and hypovolaemia. Not surprisingly, when they stand, their heart rates may speed inordinately, their blood pressures may fall, and some may experience frank syncope. We studied autonomic function in six male astronauts (average +/- SEM age: 40 +/- 2 years) before, during, and after the 16-day Neurolab space shuttle mission. METHOD: We recorded electrocardiograms, finger photoplethysmographic arterial pressures, respiration, peroneal nerve muscle sympathetic activity, plasma noradrenaline and noradrenaline kinetics, and cardiac outpu

Spaceflight Induces Strength Decline in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Background: Understanding and countering the well-established negative health consequences of spaceflight remains a primary challenge preventing safe deep space exploration. Targeted/personalized therapeutics are at the forefront of space medicine strategies, and cross-species molecular signatures now define the 'typical' spaceflight response. However, a lack of direct genotype-phenotype associations currently limits the robustness and, therefore, the therapeutic utility of putative mechanisms underpinning pathological changes in flight. Methods: We employed the worm Caenorhabditis elegans as

Noninvasive Brain Stimulation & Space Exploration: Opportunities and Challenges.

As NASA prepares for longer space missions aiming for the Moon and Mars, astronauts' health and performance are becoming a central concern due to the threats associated with galactic cosmic radiation, unnatural gravity fields, and life in extreme environments. In space, the human brain undergoes functional and structural changes related to fluid shift and changes in intracranial pressure. Behavioral abnormalities, such as cognitive deficits, sleep disruption, and visuomotor difficulties, as well as psychological effects, are also an issue. We discuss opportunities and challenges of noninvasive

The effect of microgravity on the autonomic nervous system of rhesus monkeys.

Gastric myoelectric activity and respiratory sinus arrhythmia of two monkeys flown on Bion 11 were investigated. During flight, vagal effects on cardiac and gastric function of the two animals varied differently: in one animal they decreased at an early flight stage and returned to the control level by the end of flight, whereas in the second monkey the trend was the opposite. The decrease was accompanied by space motion sickness symptoms.

Promethazine Effects on Motion Sickness During Altered Gravity Induced by Parabolic Flight.

INTRODUCTION: Astronauts commonly experience space motion sickness, which can impair astronaut performance and safety. Pharmaceuticals are frequently used to reduce space motion sickness symptoms but have not been extensively studied in partial gravity. In this research effort, we investigated the impact of oral promethazine on motion sickness during parabolic flight. METHODS: We collected motion sickness scores from 12 subjects (6 women) during parabolic flight. Each subject participated in two flights-one 0-G flight and one partial g flight-experiencing 10 parabolas at 0 g, 0.25 g, 0.50 g,

Female reproductive dysfunction and transgenerational consequences following prolonged spaceflight exposure.

Spaceflight presents unique gravitational, radiation, and isolation hazards for human exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond, yet its impact on the female reproductive system and successive generations has been largely unassessed. In the NASA Rodent Research 20 mission, we examined the impact of a 42-d spaceflight on the female reproductive axis including ovulatory capacity, implantation rate, and fecundity as well as behavioral, metabolic, and functional outcomes in F1 and F2 offspring. Females bred 5 d after return to Earth became pregnant but only exhibited a slight decline in fecundity
