Orthodontic Space Closure of a Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisor Followed by Canine Lateralization.

Maxillary lateral incisor agenesis is the most prevalent developmental dental anomaly. The management of missing lateral incisor was either closure using canine as substitution or creation of space orthodontically for prosthetic replacement. A careful diagnosis and treatment plan are deemed essential to address the patient's needs as the spacing is present in the esthetic region. Such problem is very challenging for orthodontists, prosthodontists, and general practitioners. This case report describes the orthodontic management of a 22-year-old adult female patient with missing upper left later

Post-imaging temporomandibular joint space analysis.

The objective of this study was to develop and test a quantifiable method of temporomandibular (TM) joint space analysis (JSA) unaffected by head rotation. Sixteen female TM joints were imaged using multidirectional axially corrected tomography. Lateral, central and medial image slices were obtained from each joint, traced three times each, and triplicated for drafting. Tracings and draftings were randomized, blinded, and measured manually with digital calipers. Simulated head rotations of +/-10 degrees were applied and the process repeated. Multiple comparisons were done within and between pa

Modeling CSF circulation and the glymphatic system during infusion using subject specific intracranial pressures and brain geometries.

BACKGROUND: Infusion testing is an established method for assessing CSF resistance in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). To what extent the increased resistance is related to the glymphatic system is an open question. Here we introduce a computational model that includes the glymphatic system and enables us to determine the importance of (1) brain geometry, (2) intracranial pressure, and (3) physiological parameters on the outcome of and response to an infusion test. METHODS: We implemented a seven-compartment multiple network porous medium model with subject speci

Neural space integrity of the lower cervical spine: effect of normal range of motion.

STUDY DESIGN: An experimental investigation of intervertebral foramen and spinal canal neural space integrity was performed throughout physiologic range of motion of the lower cervical spine in intact human cadaver specimens. OBJECTIVE: To investigate cervical positions that might place the neural tissues of the spine in heightened risk of injury. To meet this objective the following hypotheses were tested: 1) spinal canal integrity varies with specific normal range of motion positions of the lower cervical spine, and 2) intervertebral foramen integrity is dependent on and unique for differen

Long non-coding RNAs Kcnq1ot1 and Lncpint are involved in skeletal muscle atrophy induced by the space exposome.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in the regulation of skeletal muscle transcriptional processes, but their involvement in spaceflight- or inactivity-induced muscle atrophy remains poorly understood. To address this gap we simulated the space environment by combining microgravity, irradiation and stress in a mouse model. This simulation resulted in the differential expression (threshold set at P < 0.01) of 6191 protein-coding genes (3525 downregulated and 2666 upregulated compared to controls) and 465 lncRNAs, of which 27% were downregulated and 73% upregulated compared to

The spatial-temporal distribution of drought, wetting, and human cases of St. Louis encephalitis in southcentral Florida.

Using a dynamic hydrology model, we simulated land surface wetness conditions at 42 sites in 28 counties in southcentral Florida from 1990 to 1998 and compared these simulations with the incidence of human cases of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) within these counties. Within counties, drought four months prior and wetting one-half month prior were significantly associated with human cases of SLE. Simulated land surface wetness conditions resolved transmission loci in both space and time, and May drought was significantly associated with the subsequent occurrence of human SLE cases. These finding

Initial experience with a 3D printed model for preoperative simulation of the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum.

The incidence of pectus excavatum has been estimated to be between 0.1% and 0.8% though a large autopsy series reports. After publication of the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum, it became widely accepted. However, there are still some complications, such as over-correction and recurrence. To reduce differences in the procedure due to surgeons' experience level, preoperative simulation may be useful. Thus, we performed simulated surgery using a specific patient's three-dimensional (3D) chest wall model made by a 3D printer before operation. A 13-year-old male patient with a severe deformity

Extraterrestrial regolith is hemostatic and potentially suitable for hemorrhage control in space.

BACKGROUND: Long-duration space missions beyond low Earth orbit pose increased risks of injury to astronauts. Traumatic hemorrhage will be a cause of preventable death. Due to payload constraints, in situ production of medical materials is essential. Regolith from the Moon, Mars, and asteroids is rich in silicates, which may serve as a hemostatic agent. OBJECTIVES: Here, we aimed to evaluate whether extraterrestrial regolith simulants, their mineral components, and meteorites can activate coagulation through factor (F)XII and control bleeding. METHODS: The procoagulant potential of Lunar and

Imagined tool-use in near and far space modulates the extra-striate body area.

Active tool-use can result in the incorporation of the tool into the body schema, e.g., the representation of the arm is enlarged according to tool length. This modification even influences the processing of space: using a long tool leads to a remapping of far space as near space. We here further investigate the interaction of the neural representations of the human body, tool use, and spatial domain. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in twelve right-handed healthy individuals while they imagined moving a cylinder towards a target position in far or near space by menta

Electron-Mediated Transport in Space, Astrophysical, and Laboratory Plasmas.

Electron-mediated transport is fundamental to the thermal and dynamical evolution of plasmas across a vast range of physical environments, from the solar wind and solar atmosphere to astrophysical systems such as galaxy clusters and accretion flows, to laboratory and fusion plasmas. This article reviews the current state of understanding of electron transport, drawing together observations, simulations, and theory to contextualise key challenges and open questions. We characterise plasma environments using the Knudsen number and electron beta, and highlight that some systems fall in an interme

Comparative analysis of damage mechanisms in ballistic soaps: single fragment vs. fragment cluster under low-speed impact.

This study investigates the penetration effects of fragment cluster using ballistic soap, which simulates human soft tissue. Through a combination of experimental tests and numerical simulations, we analyzed the differences in the damage mechanisms and damage patterns of a single large fragment compared to small fragment cluster. A numerical simulation model was constructed using the finite element method (FEM) and its validity was confirmed by comparing the experimental and numerical results. The effects of the number of fragment cluster, spacing between them, and loading time sequence on the

Comprehending the pharmacological mechanism of marine phenolic acids in bladder cancer therapy against matrix metalloproteinase 9 protein by integrated network pharmacology and in-silico approaches.

Bladder cancer (BC) is the 10th most common tumour with a high incidence and recurrence rate worldwide; however, the current therapies present limitations as, regularly, not all patients benefit from treatment. Therefore, the search for new, active marine phenolic acids with anti-tumour properties is imperative. In this study, we subjected marine phenolic acids to in silico investigations such as network pharmacology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation (MD) to identify a plausible pathway and the lead compound that inhibits BC. According to the network pharmacology analysis,

Design and validation of an electroporation-capable random positioning machine for the study of cell membrane permeabilization in simulated microgravity.

Biomanufacturing is being explored as a potential solution for improved space logistics in austere environments. One potentially useful tool is electroporation-the delivery of exogenous DNA into cells using pulsed electric fields to increase cell membrane permeability. Electroporation has the potential to enable tunable bioreactors in a space environment through the targeted delivery of nucleic acids encoding proteins of interest and may also present a solution for disinfection, purification, and biomolecule extraction without requiring disposable reagents. Unfortunately, electroporation has n

Large Adsorption Capacity for Space Molecular Pollutants Realized by a Metal-Organic Framework.

The rapid development of capable spacecraft coatings for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) demands materials with a large adsorption capacity to ensure a long-duration exploration mission in a low Earth orbit (LEO). MIL-53(Al) with abundant sites exhibits resistance to the space environment in the LEO and shows great potential for VOC removal. This study combined an adsorption experiment and first-principles simulations to investigate the adsorption performance of MIL-53(Al). MIL-53(Al) demonstrated an excellent adsorption capacity for various VOCs, reaching 606.04 mg/g for m-xylene a

A Nonlinear Dynamic System Modeling of Stress Regulation and Emotional Behavior in Higher Education.

Stress regulation and emotional behavior in higher education are commonly examined using descriptive statistical models that lack a mechanistic dynamical structure. However, academic stress exhibits nonlinear behaviors, including threshold effects, burnout, and adaptive responses, that are not adequately captured by linear models. This study adopts a nonlinear dynamical systems perspective to model stress regulation and emotional behavior in higher education. The primary aim of this study is to develop a physics-inspired nonlinear state-space framework that rigorously models stress-emotion cou

Martian‑Regolith Simulant Confined Nanogenerators for Wireless Tactile Sensing for Human-Machine Interface.

Achieving a sustainable energy system for space missions remains challenging due to the continued reliance on Earth-supplied materials. This underscores the importance of in situ resource utilization (ISRU) strategies that convert planetary resources into functional electronic components. In this work, we harness the dielectric characteristics of Martian regolith (MR) simulant to create an MR/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite film with enhanced triboelectric properties. Structural and morphological analyses of the MR reveal multiple oxide-rich phases, which improve both the dielectric prop

On real-time calibrated prediction for complex model-based decision support in pandemics: Part 2.

Calibration of complex stochastic infectious disease models is challenging. These often have high-dimensional input and output spaces, with the models exhibiting complex, non-linear dynamics. Coupled with a paucity of necessary data, this results in a large number of non-ignorable hidden states that must be handled by the inference routine. Likelihood-based approaches to this missing data problem are very flexible, but challenging to scale, due to having to monitor and update these hidden states. Methods based on simulating the hidden states directly from the model-of-interest have an advantag

Robust and adaptive star identification algorithm based on linear assignment for multiple large field of view visual imaging systems.

The integration of the visual imaging system and the self-attitude determination system in on-orbit space projects necessitates robust star identification algorithms. However, disturbances in the on-orbit environment pose a challenge to the accuracy and efficiency of star identification algorithms. This paper introduces a novel star identification algorithm, to the best of our knowledge, designed for multiple large field of view (FOV) visual imaging systems, providing stability in the presence of the noise types, including position noise, lost-star noise, and fake-star noise. We employ the dyn
