Topographical disorientation following unilateral temporal lobe lesions in humans.

Studies of the non-human temporal lobe, particularly the hippocampus, confirm its significant role in learning and memory, particularly allocentric spatial mapping of the environment. The role of the human temporal lobes in topographical orientation was investigated by examining the formation of representations of a large-scale real-world environment after unilateral left and right temporal lobe surgery. Patients and normal control subjects viewed videotape presentations of overlapping routes through a novel urban area. Topographical orientation was then assessed across a range of parameters.

Mechanisms of unilateral spatial neglect in relation to laterality of cerebral lesions.

An Overlapping Figures test, considered as appropriate to study focusing of attention on small but complex stimuli falling in the central parts of visual field and a Searching for Animals test, designed to study the exploration of large parts of extrapersonal space, were administered to 38 controls, and 90 right and 82 left brain-damaged patients. The investigation was designed to test the hypothesis that the extent of space to be explored may have a different influence on unilateral spatial neglect of right and left brain-damaged patients. Both right and left brain-damaged patients showed an

Cognitive Deficits in Female GPR158 Knockout Mice Revealed by Automated Home-Cage Testing.

GPR158 is a G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) that is abundantly expressed in the brain and has been shown to organize synaptic architecture and regulate synaptic function. Previous studies have demonstrated a role for GPR158 in hippocampal-dependent learning and stress-related affective behaviors yet its contribution to cognitive function under naturalistic, low-stress conditions remains unclear. Here, we investigated the role of GPR158 in spatial learning, cognitive flexibility, and working memory using both traditional and automated home-cage paradigms. The use of automated, socially enrich

No Detectable Spatial Cognitive Impairment Despite Acute Sensorimotor Deficits Following Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion in Rats: A Post Hoc Exploratory Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability, and many survivors develop persistent cognitive deficits that severely affect quality of life. Transient intraluminal filament MCAO models are widely used to study stroke pathophysiology and recovery, yet reported cognitive outcomes are inconsistent. Apparent impairments on spatial tasks such as the Morris water maze (MWM) may reflect residual sensorimotor limitations rather than true mnemonic dysfunction. Here, we performed a post hoc, longitudinal analysis of behavioral data from a 2-h tMCAO cohort to det

Turing instability on multiplex simplicial epidemic networks with cross-diffusion and behavioral delay.

Modern epidemics are characterized by the emergence of spatial hotspots and periodic outbreaks. This paper reveals that such complex spatiotemporal patterns are driven by a combination of many-body transmission pathways and delayed behavioral responses. We propose a reaction-diffusion epidemic model defined on a multiplex simplicial complex and introduce the behavioral response delay. Through linear stability analysis, we derive the conditions for Turing instability and delay-induced Hopf bifurcation. The analysis reveals that higher-order topological structures and cross-diffusion expand the

Variation in herbivore space use: comparing two savanna ecosystems with different anthrax outbreak patterns in southern Africa.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of resources can affect animal range sizes, which in turn may alter infectious disease dynamics in heterogenous environments. The risk of pathogen exposure or the spatial extent of outbreaks may vary with host range size. This study examined the range sizes of herbivorous anthrax host species in two ecosystems and relationships between spatial movement behavior and patterns of disease outbreaks for a multi-host environmentally transmitted pathogen. METHODS: We examined range sizes for seven host species and the spatial extent of anthrax outbreaks in Etosha Nationa

Traumatic spinal cord injuries at a tertiary care rehabilitation institute in Pakistan.

UNLABELLED: The widespread adoption of head-mounted display (HMD) virtual reality (VR) systems has emerged in various fields, including spatial learning research. This study investigated the effects of VR modality level of immersion, locomotion interface, and proprioception on spatial learning and physiological measures using eye-tracking (ET) in VR. We translated the classic T-maze task from Barnes et al. (Can J Psychol 34:29-39, 1980. https://doi.org/10.1037/h0081022) to humans for the first time, comparing three VR modalities: 3D HMD VR with physical walking, 3D HMD VR with controller-based

Unbiased analysis of spatial learning strategies in a modified Barnes maze using convolutional neural networks.

Assessment of spatial learning abilities is central to behavioral neuroscience and a useful tool for animal model validation and drug development. However, biases introduced by the apparatus, environment, or experimentalist represent a critical challenge to the test validity. We have recently developed the Modified Barnes Maze (MBM) task, a spatial learning paradigm that overcomes inherent behavioral biases of animals in the classical Barnes maze. The specific combination of spatial strategies employed by mice is often considered representative of the level of cognitive resources used. Herein,

Role of the superior colliculus in analyses of space: superficial and intermediate layer contributions to visual orienting, auditory orienting, and visuospatial discriminations during unilateral and bilateral deactivations.

The superior colliculus (SC) has been implicated in spatial analyses of the environment, although few behavioral studies have explicitly tested this role. To test its imputed role in spatial analyses, we used a battery of four spatial tasks combined with unilateral and bilateral cooling deactivation of the upper and intermediate layers of the superior colliculus. We tested the abilities of cats to orient to three different stimuli: (1) moving visual, (2) stationary visual, (3) stationary white-noise aural. Furthermore, we tested the ability of the cats to discriminate the relative spatial posi

Topology-driven mechanical performance in architected cellular materials: insights from bioinspired glass sponge lattices.

Architected lattice materials inspired by biological structures are frequently described as bioinspired, yet the underlying functional principles governing their mechanical response are not always explicitly isolated. The hexactinellid spongeEuplectella aspergillumexhibits a distinctive skeletal organization based on a periodic square unit subdivided into four sub-squares, where two opposite regions are reinforced by paired diagonal struts while the remaining corners remain non-reinforced. This alternating reinforcement pattern introduces spatial heterogeneity in stiffness and connectivity at

Kihito prevents corticosterone-induced brain dysfunctions in mice.

Kihito (KIT; Gui Pi Tang) is a traditional herbal medicine that is used for treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, neurosis and insomnia in China and Japan. Recently, it has also been shown that KIT improves cognitive dysfunction in patients with Alzheimer's disease. In this study, to investigate the mechanisms underlying the effects of KIT on stress-induced brain dysfunctions such as a depressed state and memory impairment, we examined whether KIT prevents behavioral and neurophysiological abnormalities in mice treated chronically with corticosterone (CORT). Spatial learning and memory impaired after infection of non-neurotropic influenza virus in BALB/c male mice.

During the influenza pandemic or seasonal influenza outbreak, influenza infection can cause acute influenza-associated encephalopathy/encephalitis (IAE), even death. Patients with severe IAE will also have severe neurological sequelae. Neurologic disorders have been demonstrated in the mice treated with peripheral influenza viruses infection, whether neurotropic or non-neurotropic viruses. However, previous studies focused on the acute phase of infection, and rarely paid attention to a longer range of observations. Therefore, the long-term effect of non-neurotropic virus infection on the host

Interhemispheric control of sensory cue integration and self-motion perception.

Spatial orientation necessitates the integration of visual and vestibular sensory cues, in-turn facilitating self-motion perception. However, the neural mechanisms underpinning sensory integration remain unknown. Recently we have illustrated that spatial orientation and vestibular thresholds are influenced by interhemispheric asymmetries associated with the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) that predominantly house the vestibulo-cortical network. Given that sensory integration is a prerequisite to both spatial orientation and motion perception, we hypothesized that sensory integration is simil

Long-term cognitive dysfunction in the rat following docetaxel treatment is ameliorated by the phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor, rolipram.

Clinical studies report evidence of long-term cognitive and other deficits following adjunctive chemotherapy treatment, which is often termed "chemobrain" or "chemo-fog". The neurological bases of these impairments are poorly understood. Here, we hypothesize that systemic chemotherapy treatment causes long-term neurobehavioral deficits, and that these deficits are reversed by manipulation of cAMP by the PDE4 inhibitor, rolipram. Male han Wistar rats were treated with docetaxel (an adjunctive chemotherapeutic agent (1mg/kg i.v.)) or control solution (ethanol/Tween 20/0.9% Saline - 5/5/90) once

Thalamic functional connectivity and its association with behavioral performance in older age.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the thalamus' dense connectivity with both cortical and subcortical structures, few studies have specifically investigated how thalamic connectivity changes with age and how such changes are associated with behavior. This study investigated the effect of age on thalamo-cortical and thalamo-hippocampal functional connectivity (FC) and the association between thalamic FC and visual-spatial memory and reaction time (RT) performance in older adults. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance images were obtained from younger (n = 20) and older (n = 20) adults. A se

Learning impairments after 6-OHDA treatment: a comparison with the effects of thiamine deficiency.

Cortical norepinephrine, dopamine and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid were reduced by injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) jointly into the cisterna magna and the dorsal noradrenergic bundle. On subsequent behavioral testing, deficits were observed for spatial delayed alternation learning, but not for active or passive avoidance. Treatment with clonidine resulted in a significant improvement in spatial delayed alteration for experimental as compared to control animals. Injections of 6-OHDA into the cisterna magna alone had no significant effect on brain chemistry or behavioral measures. Thes

Intact spatial learning in Fmr1-/y , Syngap1+/-, and Grin2b+/- rat models of neurodevelopmental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: FMR1, SYNGAP1, and GRIN2B gene mutations Q8 are known causes of mild to severe intellectual disability (ID) in humans, with affected individuals frequently co-diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These three genes influence molecular mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity, and thus spatial memory behaviors have been of interest in studying rodent models of these mutations. However, evidence of spatial memory impairment across these models is inconsistent, with some studies reporting deficits and others finding none. METHOD: In the present study, we used a variant of

Shared and distinct cognitive processes across multiple virtual navigation tasks.

Although virtual navigation tasks are widely used to investigate human spatial navigation, the processes underlying behavior across tasks remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we administered four virtual navigation tasks assessing spatial learning, path integration, and wayfinding in a single cohort. Participants additionally completed four event segmentation tasks to examine links with episodic memory. Across tasks, spatial cues such as landmarks or the arena center improved performance, with better outcomes when navigating near these cues and when goals were nearby. Despite these s

Dynamics of Awake Hippocampal-Prefrontal Replay for Spatial Learning and Memory-Guided Decision Making.

Spatial learning requires remembering and choosing paths to goals. Hippocampal place cells replay spatial paths during immobility in reverse and forward order, offering a potential mechanism. However, how replay supports both goal-directed learning and memory-guided decision making is unclear. We therefore continuously tracked awake replay in the same hippocampal-prefrontal ensembles throughout learning of a spatial alternation task. We found that, during pauses between behavioral trajectories, reverse and forward hippocampal replay supports an internal cognitive search of available past and f

Characterization of the bone marrow architecture of multiple myeloma using spatial transcriptomics.

The bone marrow (BM) is a complex and compartmentalized tissue where spatial context plays a critical role in regulating cell behavior, signaling, and disease progression. To capture these dynamics, we apply spatial transcriptomics using the Visium Spatial Gene Expression platform on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) BM sections from both healthy and Multiple Myeloma (MM) mouse models, as well as MM patient samples. Overcoming the technical challenges of working with mineralized long bone tissue, we develop a custom analytical framework integrating spatial and single-cell transcriptomic
